Great video showing what flys to use at Farmoor reservoir, I have fished Farmoor a few times and had some great days, this video helped me a lot when I first started fly fishing.
i like the stopping off talking to other anglers, that's what i love about fishing getting out talking to like minded people getting tips and stories :) love the show man!
Its already been done last Tuesday. But we have a big launch of shore films going up next Monday 17th June, a new film every single night at 7pm so the trout one will be scheduled for the following week.
@Robert Ward Stalking is when you actually see a fish and cast to it and try to induce a take. Indicator fishing is when you have a fly (usually a blob or buzzer) suspended under a small float called a strike indicator. If your a beginner I'd recommend using indicators as they are the easiest way to catch fish.
@Robert Ward If you want you can use 2. I always use 1 fly and as a beginner I would recommend only 1 fly. The important thing for indicator fishing is to change depth until you get takes and now and again twitch the fly to give it some movement. Tight lines, have fun!
Ill have to give midge patterns a try, the emerger looks easy to make. I usually use pale morning dun or black gnat, the dun actually somewhat imitates a midge. I wasnt sure if we had buzzers in Canada but google says we do so ill give er a go.
I'm not sure but we call buzzers midges here in N. America, or are they different than midges. The buzzer larva we call chironimids and use a bead head for the pupa stage. At. Least that's the way I've learned it. Mud/weed bottoms seem to produce lots of midge larva.
I would say not, as a general rule they were "keep all", but now quite a few are offering "catch and release" which is proving popular. Which gives anglers the choice of fish for food, or fish for sport. An ideal fishing situation I would say.
I would say not as maybe the line would sink slowly. Unless you greased the last few feet of fly line to keep it up ? Everyone else was using a floating line. You can see the orange sight bobs near the tip rings as they are about to net the fish. Its a drift thing really. Let it swing round, or hang vertically. No real retrieve. But you could try anyway. Ask at the lodge for advice on the exact setup and fly.
I'm going to Farmoor for the day tomorrow. Any other suggestions for fishing around Oxford? I'm a Brit that lives in South Carolina so I'm used to fishing for Bluegill and Largemouth Bass on the fly. The local course fisherman seem to think fly fishing is exclusively a trout/salmon sport. It seems very difficult to find a body of water that is accessible and not under the supervision of some club. You can pretty much fish anywhere in the US.
Nice vid,I like it the way you approached the subject as a novice would ,you are obviously not a nooby, ive watched a lot of your vids, you know your fishing. You asked all the questions I would have asked and I have a clearer idea about buzzer fishing and fly fishing in general now. To fish and catch nothing but then go on explain why you think you might have blanked is way more informative than just watching you pull fish out one after another. There are tons of vids showing guys doing that, but that doesn't teach much. If you had done that it would have made it look dead easy and the first time someone goes out and blanks they would have blamed you. If it was easy it would be called catchin not fishin. Keep up the good work.
i tried bangour fishery in scotland for my first time got nothing but was still fun you guys should totally pay it a visit or even swanswater in stirling
For all my still water fishing years , when fishing buzzers ,I always used a greased up black and peacock spider on the top dropper!....you can't catch fish on an indicator!......just let the wind do the work and just keep in contact!
arrgggh ! am just not catching the trout are scooping the surface like basking sharks I am a novice and why has my fly line gone like a continuing letter M about 5ft of it where it meets the leader
ive done sea course fishing for many years watched plenty of your vids up to now very good ..fancy having a go at fly fishing so naturaly looked at your vids about that style of fishing,,,but hey this guy your chattin to hasent a clue not one of your best vids
