A guide for visitors on how to catch the bus in Singapore. Buses are a cheap and quick way to escape the heat and get around Singapore. They also offer a cheap way to get a view of the city. I put this guide together to give any visitor the confidence to catch the bus around Singapore.

Also take note for all travellers: Do not board any of the buses in the 500 series (5XX) or end with e (e.g. 851e). These buses are express/premium buses that charge more expensive fares.

1 very important thing/mistake that a very good amount of tourist made is NEVER BOARD from the back exit door(s). ONLY BOARD FROM THE FRONT. Boarding from the back is only allowed if 1) the bus is very crowded and driver allowed boarding from the back instead 2) At Interchange (sometimes) to facilitate faster boarding, only at more crowded interchanges. 3) If boarding with a wheelchair/pram, you MUST inform the driver beforehand. Do not board from the back door without informing the driver. Extra point : Also, when tapping you card, tap on the blue portion below the screen and NOT on the screen. You technically can exit from the front door but not recommended to do so with many boarding passengers as it can disrupt the flow of the boarding passengers. Always keep an eye out when your bus is arriving (and not stare at your phone) Flag the bus early with obvious hand waving (don't expect the bus to stop at every stop on its own) and Don't press the bell late.

Bus numbers with E/e are express services. Some bus stops are skipped as compared to its primary route. Bus numbers with A/B/C are short trip services. They do not ply the full primary route, but instead only a section of the entire route is served. Bus numbers with T are terminating buses. They will end their services at the interchange or bus terminals. Bus numbers with M are supplementary bus services to its primary route. They may serve additional bus stops or detour to serve more areas from its primary route. And yes pls do check the bus routes and confirm your destination before boarding the bus. Soon in years to come, all public buses will be in bright green colours.

also, all public busses are wheelchair friendly (though usually limited to two berths at the door in the middle). bus captains will let the wheelchair passenger on first before allowing anyone else to board. when getting off, they will help them off (again before allowing other passengers to board)

You forgot to include that you may have to flag the bus that you want to ride because the bus does not necessarily stop on that bus stop.

If a family of 5 is travelling in bus, then do all members need to carry ezlink card or credit card to tap in and out? Or can the payment be done by a single person of family on behalf of entire family
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore Год назад
Each person has to carry a card. If you have multiple cards, you can pay for multiple people; but one card can only be used for one person at a time

@@reachingsingapore Maybe I'll provide an insight onto this. If your child is below 0.7m, your child does not require a concession card. If your child is between 0.7m and 1.2m and below the age of 7, you will need a child concession card. (If you dont have a card you will have to pay student fare)

I like to use Google maps and watch myself move along the road... Many buses (but not all) have announcements for the next stop. Some have displays as well. Drivers are quite friendly, you can often ask them if the bus is not moving.
@shethatreadsmj

When you get on the bus do you tell the driver your destination then tap your card? In England that's what we do but I was wondering in in singapore if I need to say where I'm going, if I already have the right bus from looking at google
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore 3 месяца назад
Hi! No need to tell the bus driver where you're going. You tap your card when you step on the bus, and tap again as you leave the bus. The card reader will calculate the fare based on the distance you travelled, and charge this amount to your card.
@geocritic3577
@geocritic3577 10 дней назад
Don't forget to press the bell (red buttons) when you are alighting at the next stop! However, you can also ask the Bus Captain to remind you to alight if you tell them your destination and they will be happy to help you.

Do toddlers require their own card? Also how are they with prams?
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore 10 месяцев назад
Children under 7 years old and under 90cm tall do not need a ticket at all - their journey is free. You can take a pram on a bus, if your pram doesn't fit in the front doors you can use the rear doors to board the bus. Check out the guidelines here: www.lta.gov.sg/content/dam/ltagov/news/press/2017/20170308_GuidelinesOpenStrollers_PublicBuses_Annex.pdf

Can multiple passengers use the same credit card for bus? Please let me know.
@reachingsingapore
@reachingsingapore Месяц назад
Hi! Unfortunately a credit card cannot be shared between multiple passengers. Each person needs their own card to ride the bus. If you do not have another card, the next best option is a prepaid EZ Link card. Similarly though, every passenger must have their own card. Buses do take cash, but it is more expensive than using a card.

Unfortunately the system requires 1 card per person. You can use your credit card to buy a prepaid EZ Link card for someone else though. Debit cards (as long as they are Visa or Mastercard) work too.
