Nice job on the video brother and thanks for sharing! It sure brings back memories from when I was a kid wading the canal edges with a cast net throwing out grits for bait 😂 man nothing like a wild caught shiners! I can’t believe the prices of them now days, heck even the domestic shiners are expensive now lol..
@ThatShinerGuy
@ThatShinerGuy 5 лет назад
You are right, domestics are pretty expensive now. They lack the fear factor and stamina of wild shiners, but I have caught a lot of fish there on domestics.

I live in south florida. I find a culvert in a canal, chum with quaker oats, and toss the net. Works good

I love shiners, caught my personal best on a shiner. I have to admit that recently I've been building a collection of jointed swim baits though. No bait shops in my town.

Hey man great video! quick question though how long do you let the chum sit in spots before you come back and throw the net?
@ThatShinerGuy
@ThatShinerGuy Месяц назад
I move around and bait 5 or 6 spots, then come back and throw on the first one. Might be 10 minutes. Then chum a little more as you try each spot and go around again.

Is there a particular make of chicken feed you use? I'm very interested in giving this a try. Threadfin shad can be challenging a great deal of the time and locations for those is over an hour away, plus they are not near as tough as those guys.
@ThatShinerGuy
@ThatShinerGuy 2 года назад
I have used different brands from different feed stores, never noticed a difference. Some people I know use hog feed. One of my buddies used to mix in a little oatmeal.

Well done how much $ does the chicken feed run ya ? I assume you get it at a farm supply outlet or somewhere. We pay anywhere from 8-10 $$$ a dozen here in the northeast so this is great content. Keep up the excellent work glad we connected 👍
@ThatShinerGuy

I pay about $17 for a 50 pound bag of chicken feed. I can usually go out 5 or 6 times with that much feed.

Wild shiners are about $26 per dozen down here. Domestic shiners are $8 to $10 per dozen.

After chumming the first time, when you return do you throw any more chum then the castnet or just start cast netting?
@ThatShinerGuy
@ThatShinerGuy 5 лет назад
My friend throws a little more chum first. I just throw the net right away. Typically 10 to 15 minutes from the time I bait to throwing the net, then repeat the pattern on the same spots.

How do you set up your storage tank? Do you ever chum spots the day before? Will hog feed work as well?
@ThatShinerGuy

I think hog feed would work but I have never tried it. I am sure that chumming the same area over and over helps.

No, I have never had that problem. I used to throw the net along the seawall at Lake Monroe in Sanford. People were amazed at all the different fish, kids wanting to touch and throw back what I wasn't keeping. Never anything negative.

@ThatShinerGuy
@ThatShinerGuy 4 года назад
It is hit and miss, trial and error. Bait up near cover like lily pads, Kissimmee grass, etc. It is easier to throw back on the same spot if you mark it, so some guys put pvc pipes out. I tie ribbons to lily pads.

What other chum can I use like bread or something?
@ThatShinerGuy

Sure. You can use bread or oatmeal too. I tend to use a gallon or more of chum on each trip, that makes 50 lbs of chicken feed for $14 very affordable.

@@ThatShinerGuy one more for ya, do you find the weather will mess with shiner fishing, like it can with bass fishing? like a cold front making them hard to find or something?? thanks again Rob
@ThatShinerGuy
@ThatShinerGuy 4 года назад
I am pretty consistent with my shiner hole. I have more problems with wind affecting my boat position and how well the cast net opens. It does seem like the spots in direct sunlight do better than shady areas on colder days, but I usually don't have too much trouble getting 4 to 6 dozen good ones in under 2 hours.
