Hey bicycle man, can you do another video to show us how to do this when you’re behind your car, or on the street? Those are the situations that intimidate people. It’s the other factors, like not having a place to set down the frame and trying to align the chain while holding a trike (Which of course is complicated by a rear rack). Thanks!

Good idea Jamie, when we get caught up we may do that!

Some riders carry a piece of carpet to lay on the ground. That way they can fold teh bike or trike without scratching it.

Very much appreciate you for making this video. You made a daunting task, to me, very easy. Thank you!

I'd like to see how to remove the wheel when you're on the side of the road without a bike work stand.
@bicyclemanllc

To fix a front flat I do not remove the wheel. I tip the trike on it's side so the flat is on top. To remove the rear wheel I move the trike to a grassy area where the chain will not get sand and dirt on it. Then I shift into the smallest rear sprocket. Then I loosen the quick release and remove the wheel. Reverse the process to put the wheel back on. This can be avoided by putting a really puncture resistant tire on the rear like the Marathon plus..

@@bicyclemanllc "Simply reverse the process." I'm on my 5th to 6th hour, putting new tires on my Catrike Road. I don't have a stand where I can stand up, I'm on the floor and this just isn't working at all. You need 3 hands and need to be 20 years old. Am stuck and may have to flip the trike upside down. Well, I FINALLY got it back on, there was an old light I had mounted down there that was partly blocking the way, but it was still real difficult crawling around on the floor and stacking things to try to hold the tire up. The derailleur has a real strong spring which is difficult to hold back while trying to lift a heavy wheel UP into place. Thankfully once it was in place, the weight of the trike will push the wheel into perfect contact, then tighten it down securely. Some of these shop videos are exasperating because you got guys in nice clean clothes and work space, leisurely standing up comfortably with bike at eye level, well most of us are crawling around on garage floors with grease all over us and the make everything look stupid simple. Worse yet you may have just sprinted for five miles and your tire goes flat, and you can barely breathe right and panicking not knowing if you can get your trike back on the road. I watched a couple videos how to change tires because I'm replacing all 3 because getting a flat would be a traumatic experience. The tires were really hard to mount, the rim strip not simple to do and the stem hole got covered over, no videos showing how to stretch and mount those things. I'm using the Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, and have never got a flat ever with those, but my tires were looking rather grey and old after 5 years, so spent the last 7 hours changing all 3 and got stuck on trying to put the rear wheel back in. Not fun at 71 years old, but this bike is my LIFE..... Am exhausted doing all this but now I know exactly the problems I'll face should my rear tire ever go flat on me.

Ok so what I do is what you have done with the chain into the highest gear to take the wheel off , then I change the derailleur to the first gear position so that when I put the wheel back in it gets rid of all that extra chain. I rest the derailleur gently on the grond , hopefully not having any movement back and forth to deal with.As for the flat fixing , I take the tire and tube off in one movement and leave the tube in the tire. Pump it up and listen for the leak . Now you know exactly where to look for a pointy object in the tire. Fix it pump it up , reinsert, and keep smiling .

I find it harder to re-install hte wheel in low gear. Sounds like your tires don't fit real tight, that makes it easier!

@@peterstull Oop's I forgot the wheels I have are disc so that makes getting it on a bit easier. Negotiating with a V-brake and a fat tire is annoying.

A good tutorial on taking off the tire-- but you never quite got around to demonstrate fixing a flat

Good point. That part is the same as any other bike, maybe we'll do a video on it someday.

@@bicyclemanllc Having just installed 3 new Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires, I can tell you that these little tires aren't fun to take off or put on. I'm using the cheap plastic tire levers and they kind of aren't stiff enough to really get a good grip and the tire beads are very tight. So get yourself some Schwalbe levers or the steel reenforced Park Tool levers and save your hands; these Bell plastic levers are junk and make for a bad day.

Ideal Situation.. wouldn't it be nice if you only got flats while your Recumbent trike was sitting at counter level and the tires/wheels were not touching the ground..? This isn't realistic for anyone.. we need to know how to elevate the back of the trike, and lift off a heavy/awkward wheel with a Roloff by our lonesome.. Those situations need two people and a block to put under the frame.. LOL.
