Jimmy the plumber goes in-depth with taking you through the process of replacing an old thermostatic radiator valve yourself.
As always, Jimmy provides clear and easy-to-understand instructions to make this process as simple as possible.
He also provides great nuggets of info, such as the temperature on the TRVs refer to the temperature in the room, not the radiator! Watch and learn ;)
Thermostatic radiator valves are a very useful component of your central heating system because of their ability to provide with an additional degree of control over the temperature in your homes.
They greatly enhance heat efficiency because they can be set to only heat up radiators in the rooms you are using. With non-thermostatic radiator valves, even if you are not using certain rooms, the radiators will still heat up. This does not make sense and can add an unnecessary amount onto your heating bills.
With TRVs, you can set them to stay off in rooms that are not being used, therefore avoiding the common issue of heating an empty room.

Thanks good video totally get it but why don't they fit ball valves at each radiators / boiler etc.. ??? Would only need need to bleed each item, this is common on large production plants everything must be individually isolated why not in a house???

I’ve got a combi boiler can I just turn off water supply and electrics and change the TRV without draining?
@banglaforceuk

With a combi you don't need to turn off water supply Turn off boiler Drain water from the entire system. Follow as above The water is not being continually supplied in a combi boiler, you have to manually top it up.

This information & video was brilliant, We had 1 cold rad (yesterday, sunday) its been so mild we just hadn't noticed it, watched the video, hot water pipe was hot, tick, remove the thermostat, used side of pliers to push the pin up & down, tick, Whilst thermostat removed the radiator got hot, common sense told me (?) that the radiator was fine & the thermostat was faulty, of to wickes new thermostat £10, fitted it, & There you go! The video gave me the confidence to go through each part one step at a time. Plumber today would charge how much? And then they would boost the price by saying the system had to be drained & new pipes blah blah & ker ching! OK not all of them, but it makes me wonder THANK YOU xxx 10/10

Thank you for this video. I had a TRV that was leaking and needed replacing as it meant we couldn’t use the heating - your video showed me exactly what to do. £7 later for a new one and in under an hour everything was switched over. 👍🏼

Hi, can you turn off all the rad value when you are emptying the system? To stop emptying all the radiators?? Or do you need to empty ALL the system, if so, why???

I done everything as stated but when I attempted to unlock the nut from the pipe. I still had water gushing out i of it Have I missed something? Any advice would be welcome.

Two questions if I may. To drain system I thought it better to just open highest Rad and let it drain from lowest. If I open All of them wouldn’t water pour out of them when draining. Secondly. I have a leaking valve in bedroom. Can’t I just replace the valve head without having to drain it all down? Any advice gratefully received

Totally fed up with this! Single storey oil fired system and trying to change a complete TRV. Cannot find the water shut off. And no idea how to refill the system either. No pressure gauges. Surely it’s not a gravity feed?

Hi my hot water in is in the bottom of the radiator as in this video but some people say we need to place it upside of the radiator to make it work efficiently because the heating air rises up so if the valve is placed up the heating air will rise up and valve will get the real temperature then. What do you think?
@banglaforceuk
@banglaforceuk 5 лет назад
Top in bottom out for max heat output. I think it's called TBOE or something

Why do you have to drain every single rad in the system, if they all have trvs and lockshields can't you just turn all trvs to zero and lock off every lock shield and then just drain whatever comes out of nearest drain point to the rad you are changing? Please let me know, great vid btw
@aptsys
@aptsys 7 лет назад
You would have to rebalance the whole system if you did that, so it is not recommended.
@johnmaciver4492
@johnmaciver4492 6 лет назад
Close each Rad valve to lock in the system. Take not of each valve setting (i.e, how many turns it took to close each valve) When re-instating return each valve to previous setting. Balance remains the same. Maybe a small tweak here and there. Pointless draining the full system.

I want to swap the thermostatic valve from the right side of the radiator to the left side - the left side has a white cap which can be pulled off - can the thermostatic valve be pulled off in the same way and pushed on to the other side - or would that need a plumber?
@banglaforceuk
@banglaforceuk 5 лет назад
Same way, drain the system and take it off. Just make sure your trv has arrows on both ends. P.s. the other valve is called a lockshield valve
