In this video i pull all four CV axles on a Gen 3 montero. I chose to rebuild these since the OEM ones are way better than aftermarket.

Nice video, thanks for the tips about the air hammer to push the shaft out of the bearing and about raising the suspension to free the rear axle! If I may add a few comments: - the front outer CV with the brown grease in it had had the boot replaced before (you can tell by the clamp) and the wrong grease was used. I would have given it a thorough clean so as not to mix the black (correct) grease with the old general purpose grease. - you didn't mention it, so for those reading this who didn't know, if you're only going to do an outer CV, you can hammer it out in place (without pulling it out of the diff) as it's only held on the shaft with a snap ring. Just be careful to not pull out the inner CV, that would be bad. - one thing that can be done as well to prolong the CV life is to swap the left and right side CVs. It's likely that the front inners won't be interchangeable, but the outers will. In the case of the Pajero, the rear inners can be swapped as well. What it does is over time (and miles) pressure is applied on the same edge of the CV inner cage. It can be so bad that it will even chip. By swapping them around, pressure is applied on the opposite side. Just make sure to not swap shafts, they must remain in their respective side, otherwise they could fail (it's the case at least in motorsport applications). - the inner CV snap rings are always a pain, you could have tried to use gravity to your advantage and try to leave the open section of the ring on the down side. But it's a bit of Russian roulette, sometimes it goes easy, sometimes it doesn't. Just never apply too much force, it will only damage the snap ring even further.

Before watching this I thought it was a pain but you made it look easy now I'm ready to do this on my Pajero ❤

I had to pull my rear cv axles out three times and found it was easier to just spin the wheel once you got all 6 of the bolts out the rear side of the dif. As you spin it it just falls out. At least for me it did. Like most people I thought it would be hard to rebuild them. Now I just need to find time to get my oem parts back in

Nice, thank you for the video. Unfortunately this is the price we pay for lifting our rigs. CVs work under different angle than they are made to. Also rear diffs work with tilted oil level.

5:50 for budget cut sakes, my differential bearing has decided to say bye and need to do this + that.... Would a pin puncher and hammer work if normal negotiations fail?

How about a screwdriver into the vents of the rotor to prevent it from spinning while torquing the axle nut?

Great guide as always, but really, to anyone watching, please don't zip-tie your CV's and grease the bearings not the boots.

Have to admit that I'm surprised that aircooled Porsche/VW boots fit a monte and even more impressed that Luso knew this. Also, is the process for doing the 2/2.25 gens the same?
@montanamontero

it's the same once you get the axle out. removing the axle is harder on the 2 and 2.5s

@@PETERNESSat that point your engine probably should just be replaced. The top and bottom end sre both likely damaged

I'm sad that you didn't show how to replace the hub bearings on the front and rear axles, it looks like you installed new ones :( BTW, what happened to your exhaust? ;) (36:20) BR from Poland !!

haha hopefully the video i just put out helps with the hubs question. and this isn't my car, but i think the owner hit a rock and that's what separated the exhaust haha
