Jon, Great job! I work in customer service at Skutt. The terminology is this: Elements, ceramic insulators, barrel crimps to the feeder wires and the metal numbered strip is the terminal strip. But really enjoyed your demo. This is something any lay person can do. Thank you!

Wow! This is sooo much easier than I imagined! I thought for sure the brick would come out when I pulled the elements out! Thank you so much Jon!

The White things are called “Porcelain Insulators,” the small metal things, “barrel connectors.” 🙏🏼

Along with that, the twisted ends of the elements are called "Pig Tails" and the wires that come from the control box that connect to the pig tails are called "Feeder Wires". The feeder wires have to be cut shorter every time the elements are changed? so eventually, they have to be replaced too.

Super helpful!! I got a skutt cause of your videos. Didn't know this needs to be done periodically.

Someone posted about the crimper tool and that was very helpful. Did not need it last time in 2006. Also the connectors are called barrel connections. I bought some xtra online just in case since Skutt sent just the exact amount. Thank you for your video it has been a lifesaver.

Someone just gave me a Skutt kiln. I haven't seen it and don't have a model or any real info, except that he had the computer serviced or replaced, it's 240v, taller than his waist and he hasnt ever used it. He thinks it may have bad heating elements, but isnt sure. Sounds like a terrific deal to me. Worse comes to worst, I can convert it to gas, right 🤷

This was super helpful. You made it look alot easier than I thought. I see you have three skutt kilns. What size do you have? How do you use each kiln? I have a small studio of my own and looking to buy a skutt. I work on platters and mugs and bowls. What are your thoughts?

This is great! Thank you- extremely helpful. I’m wondering if you think it’s a bad element when the top section of my Manual Skutt 181 isn’t heating up. I can tell the coil is ‘burnt’ - ‘broken’ at the bend. Many thanks! Kindly, Heather

How did you know the elements needed replacement?
@benpatterson4452
@benpatterson4452 Год назад
There are a few ways to know when the elements need to be replaced. The least scientific ways are just by looking at them. As the elements age they start "laying down" more and more so each coil is kind of leaning on that next to it like fallen dominoes. But there can still be a lot of life in them at this point, so not the best indicator. Along with that, if you look through the peeps and see a spot that isn't glowing, that would be a great indocation that element is due to be changed. A bit more scientific method is keeping a firing log. Keep track of how long a firing takes, along with how full the kiln is (As this will affect the firing speed). This is super easy to do with a computer controller as it tells you the total firing time. With a manually switched kiln, you would need to keep track of the time yourself. Either way if kiln loads that normally took a certain time, take hours longer, that's likely a good sign the elements are worn (My classroom kiln with new elements can glaze fire in 4-5 hours, with the old elements it was 6-7 hours). The most scientific way is to check the resistance with a voltmeter/ohmeter. The kiln makers have documents posted that list what each element for each specific kiln should be when measured with a meter. If your element isn't within a certain range, it is recommended you replace them. And in my experience, their tech service people are great about answering questions regarding such things.

I have a firing schedule chart that I created that includes lines where I fill in the firing date, cone fire, start time and end time and total hours & minutes of each firing. You will not only notice the condition of the wires but how long it takes to do an average firing. If your firings are taking longer and longer, it’s time to change the kiln wires and also the thermocouple(s).

Just finished new elements in my Skutt 1027 the top element is the only one heating. What should I look at next?

Sorry to be a downer but would have been a good idea to install new wires from the coil to the controller terminal. Not all of them looked bad. Some wires looked a little rough and you will probably see them turn black after a few more firings. I hope I'm wrong but just my 2 cents.
