I always fill the new filter with oil first, before draining out the old oil! This way, it will give ample time for the filter to absorb the oil, oh say for 5 minutes or more! And so whether the oil filter should mount in an angular fashion, you won't have near the amount of oil spillage! Just remember this: since when you do a restart of the engine, there is oil starvation that takes place even though it may be upwards into 5 seconds or more. I have always done it this way ever since 1973!! If you top off that oil filter just one time and until you see an air bubbles surface to the top of the fill hole, you are good to go! By doing this, the circulation of oil will be so much faster on your next restart.
