Changed my Colorado's oil for the very first time. Took less than 15 minutes (if you don't count the short run to Harbor Freight to get the right socket). Felt awesome to do it myself instead of going to the dealer. I greatly appreciate this video.
Wait until after you remove the oil drain plug to remove the oil filler cap. The oil will not arc as much and you'll have less of a spill/cleanup and you wont get oil on your cross member. Then when you go up to take the cap of the filter, then remove the oil fill cap. Enough of the oil will have come out that it won't get all over the place.
I've tried it both ways, and it always arcs a lot. I tend to always miss the arc by about 1" with my drain pan, so a little bit of oil always gets on my garage floor.
one point to add. Always check your oil level after running the engine for a couple of mins. Often the level will drop after the oil circulates throughout the engine. Great video.
Just used your guide for my first ZR2 oil & filter change. The filter is a bit of a PITA. Perhaps it gets easier the more I do it. Thx for a great how to. I really appreciate your videos! So glad I’m a subscriber.
Thanks for watching! And yea the filter gets easier the more you do it. I’ve done it enough now where it’s second nature. Enjoy your truck. Thanks for the sub!
Just did 2nd oil change 2020 Colorado LT 1st one free at dealer thanks for making it a little easier I had all tools but watching your video 1st made it a lot easy than running back n forth looking for right sizes from sockets to Torque wrench
Just did mine with ACdelco oil and filter at the first 500 miles. No mention in the manual to do it that soon but i hear its a good idea. Thanks for uploading and for the torque specs.
Great video! Just helped me change my Colorado’s oil cause the dealer very called back! I did notice that the OEM drain plug is magnetic though so that was a plus! Thank you!
Great video. My Chevy dealer does a full oil change/filter for $72 out the door. By the time I get the oil filter and oil I am about at that cost. They also document it. So I just take it to the dealer. If it made sense money wise for me to do it myself I would.
Between Amazon and local auto parts stores is where I typically get fluids and filters. Rock Auto is where I get most of my replacement parts for bigger repairs.
Appreciate the video. Couple questions. Does the purchased oil filter come with its own brand new gasket? After changing oil do you let truck run in idle for a certain amount of time before driving off? Does the magnetic screw also have a gasket? If the magnetic screw doesn’t require a gasket, what is the reason that it doesn’t? If you choose to stay with the OEM screw where can I get more of them gaskets?
Thanks for watching. Yes the oil filter should come with a new gasket. I have always used the AC delco ones and they come with a new gasket. You can let it idle for a minute or two it won’t hurt. I do that and then check the level to make sure there’s enough oil. The gold plug magnetic screw has a crush washer gasket yes. It comes with one and should be replaced with each oil change. You can buy packs of them on Amazon. I think I linked them in the video description. The OEK plug uses a rubber gasket that’s attached. And does not need to relaxed. If for some reason that gasket goes bad you would need to get an entire new OEM plug.
Costco sells Mobil1 in 6-packs of single quart bottles and they frequently have sales on it. I've found that it's the cheapest way to get oil for my 2020 Colorado and it's nice to have exactly the right amount.
They just had a sale for 5 gallons of their Kirkland dexos gen 3 certified oil for $63 in store (at my location) and I think $69 online , I couldn’t pass that up lol
I loved the video and I have a question, mind you I am no mechanic. What are the pros and cons of going full synthetic on a 22 colorado? Many thanks for your videos!
Using Mobil one and Liqui Moly is not wise. Mobil one has cleaning detergents to keep the engine sludge free. Mobil one provides plenty of lubricant. Liqui- Moly is paraffin based and will sludge the heck out of an engine over time.
Thx for the vid. Was wondering if the dealer who sold me my Colorado did a fake oil change since so much else was wrong so I was planning to do another long before it says to. Anyway after checking the dipstick its full and doesn’t look very dark so maybe they did after all. Still since I got it from a BMW dealer I’m wondering if they would have had the right filter and so only did the oil. Does anyone reading this think an old filter wouldn’t cause the oil to get dark much sooner, because if so it’s likely not an old one and no need to do another change.
Darkness of oil doesn’t really mean anything. New oil will look dark after 100 miles used. If you’re concerned about the filter go ahead and change it yourself.
Thanks for the video. My 1st time doing oil change with my gmc canyon. I am interested with gold plug. When I checked amazon it displayed different sizes. M12x1.25 or M12x1.75? Many thanks.
Awesome video! Just purchased the exact same model and color but 2018. Quick question, I’m looking to see if I can add the assist handle inside on the windshield frame but for the drivers side. Just like the one they have on passengers side. Do you know by any chance if GM makes that part or where can I get one? Having a hard time finding it or a video that shows ppl putting one.
David thanks so much for watching and congrats on your new truck. As for the grab handle I am not aware of any direct bolt on applications available. I am not aware of any by GM for our trucks. I think one can be retrofitted from a Holden Colorado (Australia version). But it’s a matter of getting the parts that match interior color that makes it difficult. If you do find something. Drop me a line so I can check it out!
I just did an oil change on a 2017 Toyota Corolla and had the option of going with an oil filter insert/element (like the one you show in this video) or a traditional screw on oil filter "can." Is there no screw on oil filter option for these GM trucks? It seems like that plastic stalk could be replaced with a threaded steel pipe to convert to a screw on oil filter.
The Motors in the Colorado/Canyon use a cartridge style filter as shown in the video. But the Full size Chevy Silverado/GMC Sierra use spin on filters. It’s just the way they design the motor. No inherent difference. Both serve he same function. The plastic stalk is needed as it has some sort of spring valve in it to prevent the filter from collapsing when there is oil pressure. I’m sure someone could figure out a way to install a remote filter that utilizes a spin on filter. But I don’t see the need for that. Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment.
Thanks -- yes, I traded in a 2011 Silverado for my 2021 Colorado. I have not had to do an oil change yet, but was hoping for a spin-on filter option because the plastic cap and replaceable element seems fragile and problematic, compared with the spin on filter.
@@timweidner1406 The cap is quite quite robust. Yes, it is plastic, but I wouldn't worry about it needing to be replaced. I am quite active on the forums as well, and I haven't see any issues related to the cap coming up. As long as you take the time to make sure to thread it on straight, and not to over tighten it, you should be fine for many years to come. But if it makes you feel better, purchase a replacement cap and keep it in your tool chest.
Just got a 2021 Canyon thanks..Would note alternator is at the bottom of the engine. Never seen that before. Also plastic cover on top has many parts attached to it. All other GM cars I have had it was only a cover. Strange designs on the motor for sure.
Yes, that's exactly what it is. The additive aren't necessary. I didn't use them again after this video. I had a friend push it on me, so I gave it a shot....but I just use Mobil1 5W30 and that's it.
It needs to be snug. So it doesn’t back off while you’re driving around and you lose all your oil. I’ve never used a torque wrench on it. But make sure it’s tight. But not hulk right.
All of these videos are great! Could you do a video for changing spark plugs on the Canyon/Colorado? I haven't been able to find good instructions anywhere and it looks like a few of them might be hard to get at.
Thanks very much. I plan on doing a spark plug video. But not for a while. My truck has a little over 14k miles. So it’s not required for quite some time. Thanks for watching!
Interesting about the plastic piece inside the filter. Just did my own oil change, and The Chevy Dealership did not put it back in when they did my last oil change.
Hey hoping you are having a good weekend. Was just wondering if the liquid moly is needed with the synthetic oil ? And where did you get the gold plug ? Thanks for your help.
The Liqui Moly is not really necessary. I just like to use it. I got everything in the video on Amazon. Links are in the video description. Thanks for watching. Take care!
What does it mean to tighten to 18 ft / lbs? Also when you checked the dip stick it was only 2/3 on those hash marks ? Since you just changed the oil wouldn’t it be covered in oil on the entire hash marks surface ? Thanks
18 Ft/lbs is the torque spec for the oil filter cap. It’s how tight it should be. As for the dipstick. The oil capacity is 6 quarts. It doesn’t need to be to the very top. As long as the oil shows it’s on the hash marks it is fine to drive. Don’t want to risk going over because then you have to drain everything out. Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
@@fondupot thx so much. I’m looking forward to years and years of driving my ZR2. I’m very OCD when it comes to maintenance; your video was a great help. I’m. New subscriber.
Just bought a 2016 secondhand and now changing the oil for the first time and theres no staulk. im not sure if the older style with the metal cap just didnt have one of those plastic staulks as a part of the assembly? The cartridge filter is also a different style with no clip. Just wanna check before i do something stupid
2015-2016 engines were a different variant, LFX V6. 2017+ is an LGZ V6. And the 2015-2016 has a different filter number. I’m almost 99% sure the LFX engines do not have a stalk inside. The filter itself has some kind of mechanism built into it. Check the links in the video description for the link to the correct filter based on vehicle year.
@@fondupot Thanks for the reply! I checked the filter and it did have a metal component within the paper element that i assume prevents the filter from collapsing.
I have a 2016 canyon as well. With no stalk. I'm hoping that it doesn't need one. Silly question. But did the oil filter come 2 o rings? For some reason mine had a black one and an orange one on it
@@carlberends7633 2016 do not have the stalk. As for the O-rings, I am not 100% sure. I only know of the o-ring that needs to be replaced on the cap. But maybe there is something else on the 2015-2016 that requires an o-ring? Did your old filter lead any ideas?
Thanks for video, Truck out of warranty 3 years so I will be doing my first oil change on my 2019 Chevy Colorado. This Vid is an great helper. Keep them coming.
I think the owners manual says every 7500 miles for oil and filter changes. Or when the Oil Life Monitor reaches 0%. I don’t wait that long though. I change it when the OLM gets below 20% or every 6 months. Whichever comes first. 6 quarts of Mobil1 5w30 will run you about $40-45. The filter cost about $6.50. The Gold Plug costs $19.00. All the links in the description so you can check them out on Amazon.
@@fondupot never heard of mystery oil ?? i'm 57, that stuff has been around before i was born, you want your engine as clean as possible on the inside, add some to you next oil change, and put a bottle in your gas tank on your next fill up, the colorado v6 takes 6 quarts of oil, put in 5 quarts, 16 oz. of mystery oil , then 16 oz. of oil, it'll thin your oil down so get 1 quart of a heavier weight to mix with it,
Not sure thinning the oil down is a good thing. That essentially reducing viscosity, seems like it would be more prone to wear. But hey if it works for you go for it.
@@fondupot that's why i said mix it with a heavier weight oil, just 1 quart of say 10w30 , for example, half of that with 16 oz of mystery oil, my silverado took 0w20, it is like water, the molecules in the oil are what make up the staying power of viscosity, not just the oil flow rate, but,, yup,, it's personal choice, i've been using it my whole driving life, grew up on a small farm, i drove truvk over the road, every engine i touched had mystery oil put in it, look it up
My 2015 canyon did not have the filter stalk when I removed the filter , the old filter looks twisted a little bit . I looked inside the filter and it wasn’t there either . Is my truck safe to drive ? It went to 20% oil life before I changed the oil today
2015s are slightly different, the motor is a different build. But I think you still need the stalk in there to keep the filter from collapsing. I would get it looked at.
@@fondupot the dealership said 2015-2016 canyons did not have the stalk it first appeared in 2017 I also have a metal filter cover unlike the later plastic ones could that be the reason for the stalk ?
If any1 is seeing this videos oil filter may be different my wasnt the same oil filter part number mine was PF2129G idk if its because its a z71 but mines a v6 engine 2016 colorado hope this helps
Have a 21 canyon v6 gas...anyone notice when you start truck that oil pressure sits at zero until after the gauge sweep is done then sits at 45 at idle...of course i never watched oil pressure until after i changed the oil...lol
You missed checking the oil level AFTER starting the engine. Once the filter fills up with oil the level will drop. I also check the level before putting in the last quart in case all of the old oil didn't get drained - you already hit the issue of overfilling on another comment, checking before the last quart is a simple double check.
The VCT solenoids clog up very easily, but are thankfully extremely fast and simple to clean or replace. I also like to run some Seafoam as a precautionary first step. Probably a decent idea to clean the MAF as well.
@@fondupot There are 2 per bank (exhaust and intake) and they are located right at the front of the valve covers. You have to pull the trash can lid off to get at them on the passenger side. And then pop off the throttle body to access the driver side. Each is secured by a single 10mm bolt and has a small hardshell connector. They pop out pretty easily from there and I like to do one at a time to avoid possible contamination. If you hit them with a little bit of brake cleaner and then blow them out with an air chuck, you can keep them working well and stop them from kicking DTCs . And just to correct myself from earlier, these would be VVT solenoids in GM speak.
Why no spin on filter……then put it deep in the engine….to make it difficult…….tool extensions and large socket……also needed……then a Plastic filter cap…….
Yea. And could have gone longer. I think that oil chance was only like 5500 miles. Could have gone to 6000 no problem. It I typically change the oil between 10-20%.
Good video. You do know that GM explicitly states to NOT use engine oil additives. Best case scenario the additive does nothing, worst case scenario is that is damages engine. Engine oil additives are essentially nothing but snake oil anyway. I did see that you're using Extended Performance Mobile 1. Contrary to what people think, that oil will do NOTHING to protect the engine more in the for 7500 miles. EP is for extended drain intervals, any oil meeting DEXOS 1 will do for regular drain intervals.
Coworker talked me into it. I only used it once. Haven’t used it since. Truck has 30,000 miles on it now. I change the oil when the OLM gets below 20% usually equates to 5500 miles on an oil change.
All the correct information is listed in the video description the 2015-2016 oil filter is different than the 2017-2022 filter. However, the process overall is the same.
