Do you want to save money for your family by changing your own Reverse Osmosis filters? RO systems look complex, but it can’t be all that difficult? These filter housings look like they can be easily opened but how do you disconnect the tubing? How do you know when to change reverse osmosis filters anyway? I’m going to explain when and how to change filters in RO system, right now!
As I’m sure you know, Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water Systems are perfect for your family if you’re looking for an inexpensive source of "super pure" drinking water for your home. For a Reverse-Osmosis system to continue to operate flawlessly it needs to be maintained by replacing the filters and when needed the membrane. If your not sure how these systems work, I’ve got a great video here • HOW does a REVERSE OSM...
Most families of 2-4 people need to replace their filters annually and the membrane when needed, this video talks about filter replacement only, I’ve got another great video on membrane replacement here • How to REPLACE the MEM...
If your water contains a high amount of sediment, it may be necessary to change the 1st stage cartridge more frequently. If your water contains a high amount of chlorine, it may be necessary to change the 2nd stage pre-filter more often.
If you’re planning on disinfecting your Reverse Osmosis drinking water system, this RU-vid video of mine shows you how as you would complete that before putting in the new filters • HOW to CLEAN RO System
If you’re not sure which replacement filters you need check out this video • HOW to FIND and ORDER ... or go to our website waterestore.ca/collections/re...
1. Turn off incoming water supply and valve on the storage tank. Place a tray under the system to catch any water that spills during removal of the filter housings.
2. Open faucet to release pressure.
3. Unscrew bottom of filter housings from caps. Use the filter wrench. Discard used cartridges. I like to do this one at a time to minimize the chance of mixing up the filters.
4. Remove black rubber O-rings from grooves in housings. Wipe grooves and O-rings clean; set O-rings aside.
5. Wash out housings and rinse thoroughly.
6. Lubricate each O-ring with a coating of clean silicone grease. With two fingers, press each O-ring securely into groove below the threads of the appropriate housing. CAUTION: The rubber O-ring provides the water-tight seal between the cap and the bottom of the housing. It is important that the O-ring be properly seated in the groove below the threads of the housing or a water leak could occur.
7. Insert cartridges in the bottom of the housings. Make sure cartridge slips over standpipe in the bottom of the housing.
8. Screw bottoms of housings back onto caps securely; do not over-tighten.
4th Stage Post-Filter Cartridge: post-filter should be replaced every twelve months.
1. Remove filter from bracket and remove tubes from fittings by pressing in collar around the fitting while pulling the tubing out with your other hand.
2. Check out this video about using quick connect fittings • How to use Quick Conne...
3. NOTE: If quick connect fittings need to be installed, tape threads of fittings with 3 wraps of plumber tape and attach to filter. NOTE: The filter has an arrow on it showing the direction of flow. The tee fitting connects to the inlet side of the filter and the elbow fitting attaches to the outlet side. NOTE: Hand tighten fittings, then tighten with wrench 1/4 turn.
4. Attach 4th stage filter to bracket with the tee fitting on the right hand side.
5. Attach tubes to fittings by pushing in until the tube stops. Check to see if tube is in place by trying to gently pull tube out Turn on cold water supply. Check for leaks. Continue to check periodically to make sure no leaks develop.

Ah man - that was so so helpful! For ten years, I’ve had a reverse osmosis system and paid a guy to change the filters for me. I’ve decided to have a go and bought all the filters. Now I’ve watched this incredibly useful, clear and patient video, I feel confident to make a start. I think you’ve covered all the basics, all the possible problems that might arise and then some great tips about towels and flushing the system before drinking. I can’t tell you how thankful I am! Keep up the good work. I wish there were more men like you, who don’t make it complicated so as to appear clever and then tease the person who wants to try for themself! Respect to all modest men who are teaching us how to be good citizens, with kindness.

Gary, I am so grateful for your videos. My filter system is almost 10-years old and the filters had never been replaced. (Long story involving a renter who installed them but passed away before he could do or teach me the maintenance and then I never found anyone who could do it.) Anyway, your video is great and now I’m no longer intimidated by the system. I’ll be able to do it regularly and by myself. (I also had to re-pressurize the system and your other video taught me how to do that.)

Hi Gary … thanks for the many videos on RO systems. I just changed out my filters and membrane (75 gpd rating) and flushed the system 3 times. I then measured the TDS against a distilled water standard (0 ppm). My water supply to the RO system contains TDS = 150 ppm and RO water measures TDS = 50 ppm. You mentioned in one of the videos that one should see a 90% reduction in TDS. So I was hoping to be in the 15 to 20 ppm range on the RO water. I will continue to monitor the TDS after a few more system flushes. My question to you is … do RO membranes have a design/performance limit regarding TDS removal? My new membrane is an Aqua Flo membrane - Model 1812 - 75 -NPI. My system is a Canature 475 with (one sediment and two carbon filters. No polishing filter). Thanks in advance for your feedback. 😊

Hi Gary, thanks for all these very helpful videos. I replaced all five filters (including the membrane) in my 5-stage RO system about a month ago. I flushed the filters as you suggest. My tap water has a TDS of around 650. The water from the RO tank has a TDS of around 100. However, if I shut off the tank and let the filtered water drip, the TDS can get as low as 25. I have tested this several times and the results are consistent. I was thinking that perhaps the pressure from the tank might be reducing the effectiveness of the membrane, but air pressure is correct at 7 psi when the tank is empty. Any idea what might be going on and what I can do to fix it?

Hello Gary! Hoping you can help me figure this out...We’re in AZ and have hard water. I recently replaced all 5 of my RO system filters (including membrane) about 3 weeks ago and flushed the system for about an hour. Filters were 1.5 years old, membrane at least 2 years old if not more, and I immediately noticed the flow dramatically increased. I just bought a TDS meter today and checked our tap water level (740), bottled spring water level (30) but the RO water level is super high (1585). I haven’t been able to find any help online, do you have any suggestions? Any ideas are much appreciated, thank you!!!
@GarytheWaterGuy

You need to flush the membrane longer. they come with a preservative which will elevate the TDS. You need to fill and empty the tank at least 3 times, which typically means flushing for about 10 hours.

I have performed these filter chnages hundreds of times in customers homes and since the membrane is typically only changed every 5-7 years but the carbon and other filters are changed annually we do not remove the membrane during the filter replacement unless we are replacing the membrane. I have never had a problem with the carbon fines "ruining" the membrane or have ever heard of it happening to someone else. It wouldn't hurt to do it that way, just not necessary.

Hello, I've searched all over the internet, and see the same informationm but can't seem to find the order and type of filters that go in a 5 stage home system. Stage 1 is a PP-5 micron filter, Stage Stage 4 is the RO membrane, Stage 5 is post RO activated carbon (I believe it's typically labeled as T33?). What about stage 2 and 3? What is the difference between a CTO (carbon block filter) and a UFD (granulated carbon filter)? Do you mix two types together, or use the same? It's been about a year, but for the past several months, maybe since the beginning, I have noticed an odor...now getting stronger every day. First glass of water in the morning is now disgusting. It smells like rubber, like it might be the bladder inside the tank. Obviously I don't drink it, but I run water through it for maybe 5 or 10 minutes, then the odor goes away. The first filter is a sediment filter, the next two are carbon filters.

My RO system has a tank and 7 cylinders. The front row is typical: no.1 Sedement Filter; No.2 GAC Filter and No.3 Carbon Filter. I cant make out the back four cylinders. I dont have that top one. So to empty the tank I just turn that knob to 90 degrees. I bought this from Amazon: About this item High-quality replacement water filters Features two 10-inch sediment filter, four 10-inch carbon block filters, and one 10-inch polishing filter Compatible with all standard RO and filtration systems NSF Certified Kit contains 1 year's worth of replacement filters. This is for RO system. What do u think?

Sorry, but I don't know what you are asking. Are you asking for my opinion of your system?

@@GarytheWaterGuy My RO system has seven cylinders Three in the first row and 4 in the back row. Is it ok to just replace the Sediment filter, the GAC filter and the Carbon filter?

I thought water output from RO membrane is clean enough, what why we still need post carbon filter to remove taste? Isn't that RO membrane already remove those particles that "gives" bad taste to water?
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy Год назад
You could pickup some taste when water sits in the tank for an extended period of time.

Wouldn’t you somehow flush the carbon filter rather than flush all the carbon through the entire RO system?
@GarytheWaterGuy
@GarytheWaterGuy Год назад
There is no flushing, The carbon removes the chemicals as the water passes through.

Do you have a particular TDS meter you recommend?
