The mechanic used a mirror to look at the distance between the sensor and the ABS gear ring.

​@autodocuk thanks for your response. I've bought a new sensor, and like yours it has three plugs. But the car only has one connection. Are these extras optional or do I have the wrong part?

I think it was incase they had to remove the driveshaft. Sometimes you have to push these sensors out from the inner side due to corrosion
