How to shift down gears smoothly in a manual/stick shift car www.driving-school-beckenham....
How to change gears smoothly in a manual/stick shift car can be difficult. If you're having driving lessons, then you might cover this. Common questions are: how do I change gears without a jerk? How do I stop the car bumping when changing gear? If you're looking for tips on how to drive a manual car, then hopefully this video will help.
Changing down gears smoothly is something that takes time to master when learning to drive. This video is aimed at fairly new drivers who have a little bit of experience already. When changing down gear you'll either apply a little pressure on the accelerator pedal or footbrake. You would normally slow down before changing down to the desired gear or you could change down gears before overtaking and want more acceleration.
In this video I'm going to be demonstrating how using the accelerator when changing down gear will raise your engine speed to match your road speed ultimately giving you a jerk free gear change. In advanced driving this is called rev matching.
Our video covers the basics but if you're looking for a more technical explanation then have a look here www.iam-bristol.org.uk/index.p...
It takes a lot of time practice to achieve a smooth drive with your braking, accelerating, steering and gear changes.

Thanks for your videos, I am from India and your videos seems more natural to me as we too drive on Left side of the road. I used to get slight jerk while shifting up from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Trick here is to press the accelerator tiny bit earlier just before releasing the clutch. No one told me this thing, I just got it naturally by practicing.

I've been self teaching manual to myself using old cars at work. The reason I am interested in the manual car is since it gives me memories of childhood in Poland, with my Grandpa rowing through the gears on his old FSO Polonez Caro. Going to buy a 6 speed civic soon and still needed some clarifications. These videos are very helpful as I live in America and most people don't have a MT car or know what a clutch is.

Love your videos-it’s been super helpful and very educational. A few questions though; Is it bad for the car if you have your foot on the gas while stepping on the clutch and switching gears? I’ve been trying to experiment how to change gears smoothly.. Is it bad for the car to skip gears when switching up? (For example going from 1st gear to 3rd) I never do that but just curious and lastly, is it bad to stay in 2nd gear as you’re approaching a red light that just turned green and your car never done a full stop but it slowed down enough that you should be in 1st gear, but you just continue in 2nd? Hopefully that makes sense.

This effect is maximum when changing to 2nd gear and it happens whether I'm changing down or changing up. When changing down to 2nd, there's a sudden bump and when changing up to 2nd from 1st, there's a sudden acceleration. Slowly releasing the clutch minimizes this but doesn't eliminate it.

Nice Video! So specifically you need to put the clutch all the way down and release the gas pedal and just cover the gas pedal so you don't lose much speed in order to change gears? When about to stop do you have to always put the clutch all the way down and then use the footbreak in that order always?

You can also tap the gas to match the revs , example if youre driving on 3rd gear while having 2k revs and wanna change to 2nd gear , tap the gas to up like 3k revs and change gear at the same time. may take time to master but its satisfying to get a smooth change

Hi world driving, thank you for this video as i will attempt this while i downshift more smoothly a question i have is when rev-matching i never see in any videos how much rpm should i rev to before shifting down. All i hear is engine speed=wheel speed. Is it about 1000 rpm, 500 rpm or does the rev-matching depend on torque of the car, or gear ratios. Thank You.

@shaunakmitra963

Yea your supposed to keep the revs up when you down shift, blipping the throttle while the clutch is in helps having a jerk free gear change
@HDitzzDH
@HDitzzDH 4 года назад
Well when you down-shift your new gear will increase the RPM and I think everyone has noticed it. By slightly pressing the gas pedal a bit before you release the clutch you essentially "help" the transmission and engine to match up the rotation. Otherwise you will create a lot of friction between the engine and transmission which wears it out over time.

In your video" when to change gears" you just simply slowed down and changed down the gear without giving a thrust, so would slowing down simply be enough for a jerk free transition or we'll always need that rev matching?

Hi, can anyone reply? When I change up gears I seem to have no problem, no bump or jerk, but when I’m changing down say from 3 to 2, I do get a jerk sometimes, is it because I have to be more softer and slower when bringing the clutch back up? Do I always have to be more slower bringing clutch up from going down than going up???
@Watsup047
@Watsup047 6 лет назад
MiFF Gaming you probably know by now but when I do it it’s either at a low speed in which I just brake, press clutch, shift, gently release clutch or when I need the extra power I press clutch, apply a bit of pressure on accelerator, and gently release clutch. I think the key is to be gentle when releasing the clutch and to not just release it immediately, regardless of the situation

No, only if you slow down or if you need more torque (power, acceleration). Most of the time on a motorway/highway you'll be cruising along and maybe overtaking as you go :)

It's pointless to use your turn signals if there is absolutely no other car in sight.. The whole point of the turn signal is to tell other road users what your intentions are. Laws in finland insist that you must have your blinker on if you stop your car to the side of the road to indicate that i'm sitting here being parked.. And blinker when you join back to the road to indicate that hey i'm going to scoot over here.. And as always, using blinkers is not enforced if nobody is there to see it.
