In this video I demonstrate how to change the Transfer Case Fluid / Oil on a Mercedes ML Class or in-fact pretty much any Mercedes all wheel drive vehicle. This is not a complex procedure, so you should have no issues!
What you will see is that I step by step show you how to do this procedure safely with minimal tools. In particular I have attempted to film all of the steps involved without avoiding the trickier elements of this task.
Consumables Used:
* Automatic Transmission Fluid (MB 236.12) - 0.5 Litres Required
* 2 x Drain Plug Seal Ring (MB-N007603016105)
Tools Used:
* 8mm Hex (amzn.to/3rwK3Z2)
* Torque Wrench (amzn.to/3rqnTaX)
* Fluid Transfer Pump (amzn.to/46waiO1)
Torque Specification on the Drain and Fill Plugs is 25NM
Specifically in this video I am demonstrating this using my 2011 Mercedes ML300.
This video is actually part of a complete series of videos that I am doing (named "Front to Back"), where I am replacing every single fluid in this vehicle. Checkout the complete playlist here: • Front to Back Complete...
Here is the full video where I demonstrate with clear instruction how to easily and safely put your Mercedes up onto Jack Stands: • How to Lift a Mercedes...
You too can do it yourself and save the cash!!

I changed mine today on my 2013 Mercedes ML-350 4matic. At 122,800 miles (197,600 km) and has never been changed. The fluid was pretty dark! However rear diff fluid color was ok...and has never been changed either.

Interesting, I reckon both your transfer case and differential will have breathed a sigh of relief!! Cheers Drew

@@DrewFixIt I sort of figured out why Mercedes service manual never put the differential service intervals on the maintenance schedule. Because the fluid doesn't deteriorate that much it seems. However the transfer case ATF fluid does though it seems. Mercedes should have at least put the transfer case fluid change internals on the maintenance service manual.

@@7150285 to be honest I just did my rear differential (video coming) and whilst I didn’t comment about it to me the fluid actually looked slightly milky in colour so I am glad that I have changed mine! Cheers Drew

Thank you for your informative videos! My R-Class (W251) from 2007, has 115.000 km, and I'm thinking to change the transfer case oil. My MB dealer says I should not do it, since the old oil is thicker and new thinner oil can start to make noice. They recommend to never change oil, can that be true?

Hi Daniel, I think your dealer wants to sell a complete new transfer case in a few years time! I spoke with a senior tech at my local Mercedes dealership a month or so back, he has a GL variant of the same era of my car so would be X164 chassis and he himself told me the first thing that he did when he bought the car was change every single fluid to be fresh fluid and his advice was just make sure you buy good quality name brand oil that meets the MB required MB spec. I personally use two brands most of the time; either Castrol or Penrite (which is a premium Australian brand) Cheers Drew

Hi Daniel, this is the benefit of the Penrite ATF fluid that I am using it does all of the MB specs across the Transfer Case along with eary and late 722.9 transmission. If you're in Australia I would recommend using this Penrite fluid! Cheers Drew

@@DrewFixItI'm in Europe so we don't have the Penrite, unfortenately, so I will take the best we have, the Fuchs Titan ATF 3353 MB 236.12, cheers!

@@danieleriksson1657 Hi Daniel, you are absolutely doing the right thing as I always highlight in my video make sure you get a good quality oil in your country with the correct MB specification! Cheers Drew

@@DrewFixIt that's the tricky part. MB workshop says 236.14 together with other MB sources and other MB sources says 236.12. Some people says the new 236.14 is compatible with the older 236.12, and some says 236.12 is much better, since it's Dextron III and the 236.14 oil is not complying with Dextron III. Fuchs 4134 is MB 236.14 and Fuchs 3533 is MB 236.12
