Learn how to change your rear differential fluid. In this process I unbolt the differential cover (pumpkin cover) because there is no drain plug. Then I make my own gasket with RTV because I couldnt get a gasket for this differential. Only basic tools are needed and anyone could do this job. Remember to "thumbs up" the video if you found it helpful and leave a question/comment below. This is fast and easy maintenance to do to keep your car or truck in tip-top shape.

Hey Chris! I know this is kind of an old video but I have a bit of feedback for you so we're all getting better. I worked at the Air Force PMEL for a few years where I learned to calibrate torque wrenches amongst other things. Anyways, you want to always apply force at the center of the handle (there's usually a mark) since torque value is dependent on the force over distance formula to calculate exact torque. Not to mention avoid cosine error (anything other than 90 degrees from the torque end). Hope that helps if you haven't started doing that already, keep doing what you do!

+Texas Chevy, I cannot reply to your comment for some reason. The same goes for the other comments you have posted. I would try to figure out why because you are not going to see my replies otherwise. If you dont have a torque wrench, go get one. It is worth it if you are going to do any work on your car or truck. You can try doing it by hand but you cant really torque anything with a normal ratchet.
@dnlmachine4287

Watch your local hardware and auto/tool shops for sales, subscribing to their sites for early sale notices can help too. I suggest also getting both an "Inch-Pounds" and "Foot-Pounds" torque wrench. The old type with the deflection gauge work almost as well - garage sales etc if you are tight monied.

Just did this for the first time, and it should have been so much easier. Here's how it went: (1) Bolts were rusted beyond all belief - lots of penetrating fluid and hammering required (2) Some tool used the red threadlocker, making it even harder to undo them (3) No room for a breaker bar (4) My vehicle has 2 brackets for brake lines to the calipers mounted on the rear differential that needed to be removed as well (5) No drain plug on my rear diff - lid must be removed. 3 and a half hours later, the job was done finally lol. It still felt good to maintain DIY on this maintenance item on my truck. Thanks for making this video! I love working on my truck, and I love saving money even more!
@nlesiak3

this is an old video but a little tip. I worked in auto glass where the windshield glue was very important not to leak and a good tip is to cut a "V" notch into that plastic nozzle. This will make a triangle bead instead of a round lumpy one. when you put the lid on it will compress in such a way that an air bubble or valley can't get caught in-between the lumpy round bumps of a round bead and is a much more reliable seal. at the top of the gasket just continue the bead along side the point where you started, maybe 2-3", then blend them together with the tip of the nozzle or a nylon stick. I'm sure there are videos online how to do this if i'm not creating a good visual.

So detailed, and lots of helpful tips. I honestly would have just started unbolting the pumpkin if you hadn't mentioned the filler plug. Thank you so much. Now, if you can just find a 1993 GMC K1500 4X4 Suburban and run through the gambit, lol. But seriously, you are a lifesaver, I am pretty handy with a wrench and a Haynes/Chiltons manual, but two things I was always afraid to touch were brakes and transmissions, so I forked over who knows how many thousands for pads, shoes, and fluid and filter changes at the dealerships. Well, I have now totally rebuilt my brake systems, thanks to your videos, and it was as easy as you said, you walked me right through it, and everything went smooth. Bless you my friend, and thanks again.

Hi bud. For what ever its worth, I wanted to personally thank you for posting this great video. Never in my life did I imagine myself able to change the oil and use silicon to stop the front differential from leaking. I did exactly what you did and it worked out great. I would say the hardest part was cleaning the pan and the surface getting all that gunk. I had to use a sharp razor gently to avoid scratching the surface and the brake fluid did the trick. Thanks again and please share more videos if possible. Happy New Year.

Love your videos! Just a suggestion, be careful using a screw driver to pry the cover off. You can damage the metal. Same reason you use a plastic scraper. I generally give the cover a little "love tap" on the edge of the cover and they pop loose. You can also drive the plastic scraper in between both surfaces if needed. Again, great vids!

Yo chris fix, your videos really helped me out a lot throughout my troubles with my 95 ranger. Youre really informative ! Just thought id give you a bit of advice for all the advice youve given thousands of people as a little bit of a payback. Torque wrenches are actually not very accurate under 10-15lbs, to get to actual spec itd be better to use a inch-pound torque wrench. all youd have to dois convert foot pounds to inch pounds. I doubt its inaccurate enough to hurt anything though, just a little tip ;)

Important: Always undo the filler plug first. If you do the drain plug first and cant get the filler plug out, you're up shit creek without a paddle. And no diff oil.
@101Volts
@101Volts 7 лет назад
Alternatively if you have a way to flip the car upside down and fill it or use anti-gravity you might be fine. I'm saying this as a joke though it *would* work...
@BelovedOppressorAladeen

i dont know what they suggest you do if your filler plug is rusted on and your shit is out of oil, i'd get the filler plug first regardless
@MUSTANG408W
@MUSTANG408W 7 лет назад
gullf1sk That's not required on a Ford 8.8. Whether that fill port is open or closed nothing changes and the process of changing the gear oil remains the same. On a lot of 8.8s that fill port is prone to being rust-welded. There are many aftermarket 8.8 covers that have drain holes on them.
@Legal-gv4gg
@Legal-gv4gg 6 лет назад
NOPE, Just remove the battery, empty the gas tank, turn the vehicle upside down and refill it through the drain plug- OR add levitating nano-particles to your dif. oil, and squirt into the drain hole; it will all fly up to the top. lol

Couple things I would add, don't use a gasket, it's more likely to leak its better to use the gasket maker anyway and also depending on what you use read the label cause you should wait 24hrs before filling the diff
@allraiders420

Scuff pads and fine sand paper also work well for removing old gaskets

I just changed the rear Differential fluid in my grandmother's 96 Ford Explorer and although it wasn't to hard I had to heat cycle the fill plug as far as I know it was the first time it's ever been changed and if it wasn't leaking I might have not messed with it but when push comes to shove I find a way to get it done now it was already drained when I had to come up with the solution but the video was a very big help in more ways than one.

As long as you have a gasket, the surface condition, as long as it's clean, is not a huge concern. Metal scrapers won't compromise the seal. Toluene or diesel fuel works wonders to clean it too.

@Incrediblebowlesmodels
@Incrediblebowlesmodels 5 лет назад
It's rare for vehicles to take the same oil for transmission and engine military vehicles use this but your civilian car takes diff oil ,brake fluid for brake system, transmission fluid for transmission , oil for your ac compressor,engine and on 4wd vehicles your transfer case takes oil vehicles require alot of care cant just hop in and go alot of moving parts make the vehicle go and you gota have fluid for those parts

Good job again Chris. Your fluid looked rough. For any viewers that have driven through high water, THIS IS IMPORTANT ! Moisture can enter through the ends of the axle and the front yoke seals and bearings. Changing engine oil, transfer case and tranny fluid as well a differential will save your ride. Well done with the torque wrench. Just remember that using an extension or deep sockets will throw off your torque settings slightly ( mostly for HIGH TORQUE settings ). WRENCHIN" and RIDING.... JK.

Very helpful video! I just did this job today and would add two pointers: 1: Wear gloves because this oil stinks and the brake clean is pretty harsh as well. 2: Look for the gear oil in the pouches which can easily be added much quicker without a pump.
