I like to pack my wheel bearings with red high performance grease when re-assembling the assembly. Sometimes the oil doesn’t get up on the top 1/2 of the bearings right away so packing them adds an extra level of protection during the initial drive period after installation. I think it helps extend bearing life since it has good lubrication.

Now I have to give credit where credit is due. I don’t know if anyone else picked up on the fact that you felt 100lbs of torque. And realized you didn’t set your wrench. But we’re dead on when you did. Love it my man god bless you in your business. I hope to have you look at my trucks in the near future. Where are you based out of.

Put High Temperature Wheel Bearing Grease on your Gaskets. It works very well and the Gasket comes off much more easily the next time that you disassemble the parts.

Yes, the seals are only an extra $35 each, and takes an extra 20 minutes to swap them out while the brake hardware is off, so its a no-brainer to me. The last wheel seal I had to get replaced on the road, out at the TA in Ontario, California, cost me over $500, for one wheel!

Most items yes I agree when your in there replace it if not much cost but wheel seals are different If not leaking and all rusted lips on the metal leave it alone, you will have more of a chance it leak when you install on truck if u just nick it slightly, plus creates a big job that should have been easy job, One exception for techs that are old enough is cast spoke wheels , ask your viewers why??

My seals were not leaking when I changed them out, the reason of changing them was that I already have them apart, It made sense to change them, in case of leaking while I am on the road. After changin the seal, I checked the oil level, it was full.

Please tell your viewers not all seals are equal when removing hub you best check spindle to be sure there is no "Wedding Band left on there" that will need to be removed by hammer and chisel depending on what seal was used prior, and as far as install depends on seal your using CR SCOTTSEAL CLASSIC will require special tools and Never use oil on lip seal itself with those. totally different install steps with those and they are most common lets say a cr 47697

If they are adjusted properly, lubricated properly, and sealed properly. Long time. Upwards of 1M miles. Tapered bearings are one of the most robust bearing systems in existence.

What are your thoughts on the 6x2 axle configuration?
@truckingandfixing
@truckingandfixing 4 года назад
The 6x2 would be great for a Line haul operation where you are on the same predictable routes. It will reduce weight. Giving you a little more load capacity, and in some cases you can raise that dead axle to save on tire wear when its not needed. If you are running over the mountains, in snow, or off road anywhere it would probably not be recommended, that's probably why the 6x4 is more industry standard.

@@truckingandfixing What about gear ratio? I had a dealer tell me that a 3.08 with OD offered the same performance characteristics and mpg as a 2.47 Direct drive.
@truckingandfixing
@truckingandfixing 4 года назад
For the lanes that I run (over the Rockies, Cascades, and Sierras), I prefer a little lower gear ratio. My T680 had 3.36 with a 13 speed(manual) and my T660 now has 3.42 with a 10 speed(manual). I do sacrifice some fuel economy, but I can move pretty easily over the big grades without running my engine too hard. The higher ratios you described are great for economy. I am averaging about 6mpg with my T660 now, with a Cummins ISX 15, about about 550hp, and that's running as fast as speed limits will allow. I may put a 13 speed in this summer to improve that a little.

I'm not trying to stop anyone from DIYing, but please read the manufacturer's instruction, this is not something you should attempt after tossing out the instruction papers. Your hub may be different from what is shown in the video. If you mess up real bad, you're lucky if you prematurely wear out the bearing or seal, if you're unlucky you lose both your wheels and it kills someone on the road and you're looking at manslaughter charges.
