I know this post is old, but I want to say thank you. I bought a 1999 GL 1500 and it needed a few things, and I found out that absolutely no one around me works on them at all, whether it is a Honda dealer or private party. Your instruction videos on the GL 1500 has been a blessing.

My 93 with over 280,000 miles on it still has the factory plugs, never been tuned, filters have been replaced, runs wonderful. Dealership said "don't mess with it". Gets 42 mpg. Just for the record.

For anyone watching just a small tip. Do not use anti-seize (just like Mr. Clifford did not use) if you are using NGK's. NGK has an anti-seize coating already on. This is directly from talking to their tech department. Also, just for completeness, the gap is 0.036 in. and the torque is 12 ft/lb. Awesome video.

I periodically soak my rubber grommets in transmission fluid. Over the years I've found this tends to keep them from drying out. Easy enough to do. I use one of those small snack baggies, toss em' in, cover em' with the fluid and let em' hang for a day or three and then put em' back on the scoot!

Would love one of these bikes but I refuse to buy any bike that is overly difficult to service or clean. I have a Yamaha V-star XVS1300 cruiser. Service times are: Plugs 5 mins. Oil change 10 mins. Air filter replacement 2 mins. Non serviceable drive belt. No timing belts. I really would love the extra weather protection and comfort of a goldwing but I would find it just too stressful come service time and unfortunately, my pockets aren't deep enough to pay someone to do it for me. I wonder how many other riders are like me and wonder how this fear of servicing affects sales.

its more intimidating than difficult. and once you have done it a couple times its almost autonomous. also when your handling hte body parts you can inspect them for cracks and other damages. tune the fit if needed. and also when running wires for aux devices. dont forget the monster wings can run a plethora of electronics, cell phone chargers , multi camera, GPS devices, I have my MP3 player mounted as well playing into the stock stereo through an Aux cable added to the system board. and a simple bluetooth receiver that also shares the aux cable for phone music/videos and even phone calls go through the on bike headset intercoms. I rode cruisers for 43 years, 10kms on my first 83 gl1100 i said, why haven't I been on one of these? its the most comfortable bike i have ever ridden. smooth powerful, forget about hand buzz after some distance. none. I'm not trying to sell you on it, but only sharing my initial thoughts with one that was 38 years old, needed head gaskets done, forks done, rear shocks done, exhaust done and two new tires needed. I took a chance on it for $600 delivered. now its an amazing bike. so good that I said if this gl1100 is this good ...the GL1500 must be even better. I wasn't disappointed.

Cliff, me again. My Wing quit again, have to replace the alternator again. I think you have taken much of your bike apart and I am in the process now changing the alternator. There is a wire from the alternator and goes up into the body behind the reverse gear lever and it plugs in to a block. I cannot get that panel with the reverse lever off. I cannot find what is holding and there is now way I could fit my hand in there to unplug the wire. I have seen a video where the guy just cut the wire and spliced it but I would rather do it the right way. Do you have any information on how to remove the panel with the reverse lever attached ????

Hello Clifford! Thank you for the great advice on working on the GL1500s! I have a question for you about the large lower radiator water hose going to the water pump. On my bike it is touching the center mounting nut for the lower cover and has made a dent in the hose. Is the hose supposed to be touching that nut? I have zip-tied a piece of rubber tubing over the water hose to protect it. Do you have that problem on your machine? Thanks !!

Clifford, this is off topic but I am hoping you can help me. I have a 98 Wing and I was on a ride yesterday and the bike quit running. It would not turn over. I checked all the fuses and they were all okay. Every once in a while it would start and run for about one minute and die again. The battery was dead but would build up after setting a while. I figured the alternator went out so that was the first thing I checked after charging the battery. The alternator shows it was charging. With the battery charged it starts and runs perfect. I just cannot figure it out so not I do not trust it. If you have any thoughts on this issue I would sure appreciate it.

Cliff, I just wanted to report that after a month of trying to find out what was wrong and found nothing I took the bike for another ride and it did the same thing QUIT RUNNING. I quit right in front of a tire store and the guy was a biker and he came out to help me. I removed the battery and he checked it and told me my new battery had a short in it. This time it also took out the alternator. Replaced battery and alternator and the old girl is running like she used to.

Have a question for you. I have a GL1500 and my brother changed the oil and filter. Next, he wanted to clean the spark plugs. He cleaned the spark plugs with gas, dried them off and put them back in. Started it up and it ran rough and back fires when the throttle is turned. So we tried new spark plugs. With the new spark plugs it is still running rough and back firing. It is in the correct firing order with no crossed lines. The gap was checked and is between .8 - .9 mm. I have no idea what is wrong and it is frustrating.
@CliffordRice
@CliffordRice 7 лет назад
iwannaapple, Your carburetors are most likely the problem.
@iwannaapple7190
@iwannaapple7190 7 лет назад
The bike had been running just fine. It had only been about 30 minutes when I got off of it running around getting the parts needed. So, I don't understand why you say the carburetors. Can you explain that please?
@iwannaapple7190
@iwannaapple7190 7 лет назад
In fact, as of this morning, we cleaned the coil wires to make a better connection with the new spark plugs, cleaned the air filter, and he just pulled up into the driveway with the carburetor cleaner to try and clean the fuel filter. It as almost as if the fuel/air mixture is not right now just because of cleaning off the old spark plugs. But it was running just fine minutes before any of this was done. I should have spent that $85 an hour at the shop.
@CliffordRice
@CliffordRice 7 лет назад
iwannaapple, your rubber slides inside the Carburetor could be worn or rip. All it takes is a pin hole to them worthless. I've seen a few bikes with similar issues and that usually fixes it. I can't say for sure this will fix your problem, it's a good place to start.
