Hello! In this video, I show you how to change your spark plugs on a Volkswagen Passat B5.5 with the 30V V6 under the hood. This can apply to all cars as long as you know the basic understanding of how an engine works and where the spark plugs are located in your particular vehicle.

For anyone else that watches this, a good way to easily take off the plastic screws on the engine covers and put them back on is to use a penny, I know it saved me quite a bit of time in the harder to get to areas that a screwdriver can't get to

Also, it's a 'nit' but the anti-seize does NOT hold the plug in. It is used to keep the plug threads from binding (or seizing) to the head on the next removal. And it should be applied to the bottom of the plug for about half way up so that when the plug is threaded back in, the compound is smoothly worked up to the top of the plug threads.

Considering how often German cars are built to exact specifications, i would have torqued it to exactly what VW recommends. Also, NGK makes a VW approved OEM replacement spark plug, that is a 4 prong. It is note expensive than the single, but at least here in the US, is about 3 dollars less expensive than the OEM ones. Totally worth it, they work great.

Those valve cover plastics have 1/4 turn locks. So a quarter turn is enough to undo them.👌

I didn't see a YT address for the MAF removal and cleaning - just a picture. What did I miss? Should I have clicked on the picture? Would prefer an address. And putting anti-seize on a plug 'reduces' the torque required by about 10%.

Another thing i would like to ask is do you have any clue of how to change the starter? Thanks and any help will be highly appreciated if you do have a video of that link me up please

Hey! I do not unfortunately. I had to part ways with the car over two years ago now and I’ve forgotten everything! I didn’t touch the starter myself.

I have a question with a 2002 Passat V6, there’s a hose loose in the intake that even the dealer say they don’t go we’re it goes, can I send you a video? Maybe you can give me a pointer
@y4nnickschmitt
@y4nnickschmitt 4 года назад
If you are talking about the airbox, there is a hose connected to the front of the air filter housing wich draws air for the fresh air injection pump. That can be deleted with a plug. Plus you´d have to disconnect the pump wich is located behind the bumper cover on the passenger side.

Don't you have to gap the NKGs and do you know the torque specs for the spark plugs. My 1999 VW Passat 2.8 has 140000 miles and plugs were replaced at 100000 miles with Bosch platinum. Should I replace them?
@tomsgaragefix1004
@tomsgaragefix1004 5 лет назад
Hello! I did not gap the plugs, they came pretty gapped and I fitted them and they worked better than the old ones! There’s no torque spec for the plugs themselves. It’s recommended you give them a good turn and make sure they are on there nicely. Not too tight though. Plugs should last around 100K miles before replacing them so it’s up to you if you want to or not.

I have the same car on mileage 57k+ but it wont start or crank i think it could be either the starter or spark plugs so am trying to find clues of how am going to diagnose it. Ive ordered an obd2 reader online that is a lil cheaper the one for android with an app. I donno if it will help to read some codes coz i do have a check engine light on and the dashboard lights up but there is also a battery sign. I did tried the battery but it seems okay. Well am still there but hopefully if it will be spark plugs i guess your video can help me do it myself since am on a low budget now due to this pandemic dont wanna see a mechanic! I will do so when am out of options!

When you turn the key in the ignition and it makes a noise that’s very fast. Like a ddddddddd and the dashboard flashes fast then you may have a dead battery. If you’ve changed the battery and it still doesn’t work then I would assume it’s the starter. However starters and spark plugs don’t need to be changed for another 20-30K Miles in my opinion. Let me know how it goes!

My car smells like gas when I first turn it on it’s 2003 Passat 1.8 turbo but wastes a lot of gas In not a normal ways no leaks no nothing everything there do spark plugs save fuel ? The car I bought haven’t been changed since 150,000km on it from previews owner and I put another 30,000km on it so I wonder maybe that could be a reason ? My brother said if your spark plugs are that old means they aren’t burning fuel properly I’m not sure if you see this message let me know like I said when I first turn it on fuel smell comes from muffler then goes away as I drive let me know and thank you

I don’t get this at all, mis information! Anti seize does NOT keep a plug in the torque does that, it stops the plug binding in the head as the plug is steel and the cylinder head aluminium. You tightened the plug with a torque wrench but not to the correct torque as stated in the workshop manual, you are guessing! You had all the right tools but didn’t use them correctly, nuts!

As stated, this is a DIY video and channel. I am no means perfect or a qualified mechanic by any means. If I got a piece of information incorrect, I am sorry. I based these off of my knowledge at the time and the information I gathered off the internet.

Keep the talking to bare minimum, in fact a complete silent videos are now trending. Don't unscrew the cover screws like a regular screws, you will damage them, they are twist-on and twist-off screws, half a turn will do it. You took off the side covers first when you supposed to take off the top cover first and then the side. Don't use torque wrench as a regular wrench, it will throw off the calibration, use it to torque down to a specific torque specs only. Make sure you gap the spark plugs first
