I had to change the oil on "Grim Repo" my 1998 4Runner junkyard truck, so why not turn it into a DIY video!??

Faye, this is great for me that you work on your 3rd generation 4runner because I have a 1999 4runner. As do thousands of others around the World. I fixed my wobbly shifter with your video (thanks) and I look forward to your next fix video. I am more confident in my abilities to work on this extremely reliable beast. Love your show and good luck on your RU-vid channel. Again thank you and Godspeed. T. In Atlanta

Heck yes!! This is EVERYTHING to me! I don't make much $$ on these videos based on the energy and effort I put in - what really drives me to make these is empowering the at-home DIY-er to take control of their own repairs. I am so grateful for your comment! Thank you so much!! (and I think next I am going to tackle that boot!!! haha!)

The oil cap tip is right on. Last month I had my wife's Camry in at the independent shop I've used for almost 40 years for an oil change and quick check (no other issues noted). When I picked it up I dropped off my Outback for an oil change. On the way home in the Camry I thought I smelled oil, especially at stoplights. After I got home I let the engine cool and went to check the oil level when I discovered that the oil cap had not been tightened. It was sitting loosely on the filler. Fortunately I did not lose any oil but that was the obvious cause of the smell. The next day when I picked up my Outback I mentioned it to the owner of the shop, and he was not happy. Later that day the mechanic who worked on the Camry called me and apologized. He had loosened the oil cap before draining the oil and just forgot to tighten it. He said that he had found a small box in the shop and had spray painted it red and he was going to put that over the filler tube in the future to remind him to replace and tighten the cap. This mechanic has only been at that shop for about 30 years. It can happen to anyone.

Wow!! I really like the way that he handled it! He owned up to it and then told you about a solution that's the way it needs to be done!

That is great the way he handled it. I am sure the shop owner was not happy and the mechanic that did it was not a rookie but that just shows and proves we are all humans and we sometimes make mistakes and or get distracted. we all make mistakes.

Thank you for the thorough skid plate and oil change video! I have a friend with this kind of 4Runner and he's timid about DIY work. I sent this to him. I have opinions about oil drain pan/containers! The whole point is to skip the step of pouring from the pan/container into some other jug and having to clean up those spills and wishing you had three or four hands. I just clean my container when it's full, put that in a big trash bag, put it in the car (with seat slid back to hold it upright, or a bungee) and take that to the auto parts store, where they let me carry it in the back and pour it out myself. (This may vary by region; I live in semi-Mayberry conditions, and I look like Hank Hill.) Also, I decided I liked my drain pan/container so much and that no new ones were made like that anymore, that I started to worry about sliding it across concrete. You could slide it on cardboard, of if you're a total nerd, make a sheet metal tray to fit the bottom of it so it slides noisily across concrete but doesn't wear the plastic. (OK, I'm a nerd.)

Such a pleasure to watch your videos. On my 87 Mercedes the oil housing is in the engine bay. Easy just take the two 13 mm bolts off and take the cover off and then remove the filter. But what is good about that you can just pour the new oil into the oil filter housing. I do that with one gallon and then remove the oil cap and pour and top off.

Sometimes we overlook the basics. Some folks have never done an oil change before so thanks for posting this. And even us salts can get too complacent and make an oopsie. I just changed the oil in my small block Chevy a week ago. It calls for 5W-30, so that's what I grabbed at the store. What's left in the jug goes in the trunk. A few days later, I'm rearranging the trunk and I picked up the jug and something didn't look right. "High Mileage 5W-20 Full Synthetic made for..." Wait, what? "5W-20" Well, crapadoodle. Over 30 years of doing this. I've changed oil on everything from a 26cc weed whacker to a 1790 CID diesel. First time I ever put the wrong stuff in. I think. Familiarity breeds contempt.

Oh my gosh I love this comment so much and I relate to it more than you know!! I don't really do oil changes anymore, So to be honest this is even a good refresher for me to go back to my Express Maintenance days and remember all the things that helped keep me the only technician to never have a comeback 💪🏻 those little tips and tricks can really make a huge difference!!! And I'm not a super huge fan of the high mileage stuff, I think it's a little bit gimmicky. Are you planning on changing it again soon?
@maingun07
@maingun07 3 года назад
@@FayeHadley Oh yeah, definitely. Just the oil, though. I'll just dump the filter and reuse it seeing as how it's brand new and all, but I'm not driving her any further than I have to with that thin stuff in there. A little residual 20 weight isn't going to hurt anything, but not a whole pan full! I think the high mileage stuff is gimmicky too, but that was all they had left on the shelf. I should have looked closer at the jug when I grabbed it, but it was on the 10W-30 shelf. I should know better. Only got myself to blame. I used to know an auto tech instructor that for a time worked at an oil refinery. Something he said stuck with me. Oil is oil. As long as it's the right weight, it doesn't make much difference what the branding is. At the refinery, he'd see trucks from Valvoline, Quaker State, Pennzoil, and just about every other brand out there filling up from the same processing tanks. The only difference is the additives that they put in it. May be a little less true today with synthetics, blended oils, etc., but probably not by much. I usually grab what's cheapest, but use a quality oil filter and change both religiously. Oh, and I never ever flush. Made that mistake once. Cost me my 375 Wildcat (340 cid). 30 years ago and I still cry thinking about that. The only comeback that I had wasn't even mine. Dude pulls into the shop in a big delivery box van. Says he had a wheel come off on the road, then points at me, "And that's the son of a (BLEEP) that worked on it." I'm sweating bullets. I've done a lot of box vans, but I don't cut corners, especially not with lug nuts. So I go pull the original ticket. The van was in two months before I started working there. The manager pulls me into the office and I show him the ticket. I wasn't employed there at the time and the tech that did the work isn't employed there now. Didn't matter. The customer fingered me, so I get written up. Had a second incident a few months later. The foreman wanted to pull this full sized pickup into the little bay. I told him it wouldn't fit, but he insisted and would be ground guiding me in. I told him a second time that there is a reason we never use this bay for anything but compact cars. He not so gently reminded me that he was the boss and that I didn't want another write up. So I'm driving and he's outside watching and giving me directions. I used to move tanks around in the military. You do exactly what the ground guide tells you to do, no more, no less, and if anything goes wrong it's on him, not you. So we're slowly creeping the truck in. I stopped several times to tell him it ain't gonna fit. "Sure it will." _Crunch!_ It didn't. The truck hit the overhead door track. Customer's vehicle gets damaged. Foreman gets a verbal reprimand from the manager, but I get a second write up anyhow. I walked. That was my last job in a shop and I got out of the biz. I only wrench for friends and family now. Much happier. Plus, you can say, "Hey dummy, I told you so." For some reason paying customers get cranky when you say that. Hell, I just wrote a damn essay. Well, maybe you'll get something out of it. Oh, and if you ever decide to open up a shop again, I'll do the oil changes for you. Cheap. I don't work for money anymore, only pizza. I'm trying to grow my spare tire into a full sized.

Hey Faye, really like the new intro and the visual aids were nice touch you pretty much nailed that one covered all the tips and tricks for changing your own oil. One thing I like to do after the oil has started to drip I don’t about a quarter quart of fresh oil in to push through the last of the old oil depending on the engine you would be surprised how much old oil flushes out but then again some engines not as much comes out. I hope it’s just the boot on the steering rack those can be such a pain what do I do with the boots seems to work pretty good here in Michigan with the salt and everything in the spring I spray off the boots really good then I dry them with a Shop towel then I spray on some AT-205 reseal it’s supposed to rejuvenate rubber seals internally but it seems to keep the boots supple without weakening them I just spray it on and wipe it off. Keep the videos coming I’m sure you’re helping so many people which is awesome have a great one🐔🐔🐔👍

Good to finally see another auto/truck maintenance video. Hope all is good with you Faye. BTW the difference between the full and add marks of our 2009 RAV4 us 1.6 US quarts. It makes no sense that it would be exactly one quart since the add mark represents the minimum safe level and the full mark represents the maximum safe level. Years ago they likely took the minimum safe level and simply added one quart to that to arrive at the upper mark so you knew when you were one quart low. Folks got into the habit of going over the upper mark back then but the upper mark (at least on a Toyota) now represents the upper safe or full level and should not be exceeded. And some milk jugs are fine for used oil as long as as they have screw on caps.

Hey! Great video. Seems like you know what your doing! I noticed 1 thing. (Keep in mind maybe I’m miss seeing something or something like that.) when you were putting the dipstick back in, I would clean it before putting it in. Because, when you don’t clean it, there’s gonna be oil on it and when you start the car, more oil can be splashed on and it can become a false reading. If you clean it though, it can become more of an accurate reading, your a good influencer!

Thank you for talking about the drain plug washer. I think the majority of DIY oil changers reuse over and over again, which COULD eventually lead to trouble. Also, side note, I think those are the same tires I was looking at for my Tahoe. But it's only a 2WD so I feel like I would be a fraud with such aggressive tread. They look great on the 4Runner, though :)

I only have the two wheel drive 4Runner!! I don't think it's fraudulent at all!! I chose these tires because of their aggressive look but also how quiet they are on the road and they don't really hurt my feel economy as much as I was expecting the lift and larger tires to do! They also have a really great warranty, So I was going for a long lasting tire with minimal road noise and also looked amazing! (And I also really did not want to spend $1,000 on tires!!)

Another great video Faye. One thing I like to do is prime the new oil filter before installing it. Depending on the design I at least try to soak the filter material if it installs from the top and if it installs from underneath I'll fill it as much as I can, maybe 3/4 full. It just helps everything along on that first start, only takes a few seconds and you can lubricate the filter gasket at the same time so it tightens down nicely.

Good video, very helpful. Rewatching this video after doing the oil change - I think I made a mistake by not taking off the front half of the skidplate (just took the back half off). Even with the back half off I found the oil filter SUPER hard to reach, and unlike your video I had a torrent of oil running everywhere (including me; and yes I had already drained from the drain plug for a long time). I think it would've been easier to reach with the entire skidplate off... next time I will try that. Other than that, great video, didn't know about those washers and ordered some before doing the oil change, glad I did.

You can probably take out the oil filter without removing the skit plate but 9 out of 10 times the oil mess from removing the oil filter will build up on the skit plate and overtime is just too messy. On my 2000 limited, it is so tight (maybe impossible but if you have tiny hands it might work) that I prefer just to take out the skit plate.

Love our 2000 4Runner with about 210K miles. But changing the filter on a 4x4 version is much more of a pain in the butt. Very little space to get arms up in there, and it makes a mess most times. My 2nd Tacoma is a breeze in comparison with the filter topside.

That ought to make a really good video on resealing the steering rack. I’m sure that with all that you have going on NOT the most pressing or pleasant job to look forward to but with all the older 4 Runners out there, there should be good viewing content! PS I really like the “ Intermission “ music between the video and feeding the birds. Who is it?

The song is called "Not So Long Ago" and I love it too! And yes, I just finished resealing the steering rack in my older supra a few months ago, and it was quite the task!! HAHA!

I found one of my pan bolts broken off and whoever put it back just used a self tapper and made a new hole 😫. Well it bugged me enough that I drilled out the old bolt and was able to save the threads and put in a new bolt 😃

When I changed the oil and filter on my Eclipse, it was the easiest thing ever. The drain plug and filter were right next to each other! And there was no reset I had to do!

Great video, Faye. I really like your idea of putting the oil cap near the hood hinge, as a safety precaution. Keep up the great work.

Where did you get that funnel? I’ve never seen one like that? You could start the engine with it in there to check oil !!!

Hi Faye- great video- thanks for clear directions and tips. Since these 3rd Gens make a little bit of a mess taking off the oil filter, what are your thoughts/expertise on installing a remote filter more in the engine bay? (Im thinking/debating on this)

Hey Faye, love the 4 Runner, it's in awesome shape! I had a question for you though, was wondering you opinion on the new 5th Gen Rav 4s... My wife just bought a 21 TRD Rav and wondering what you thought of them... Figured I would ask a Toyota Tech 😀
