In this video, I will be showing you how to change the oil on a John Deere STX46. This has a 14hp Kohler engine, a similar engine may be found in other lawn tractors and this oil change procedure may also be similar with other engines.
First I prefer warming up the engine for 5 minutes to help improve oil flow for draining.
Typically there is a cap on the oil drain valve, however, it’s missing on this engine. Next is finding a hose that can fit over the valve’s end, this will keep the draining process fairly clean. Make sure it’s long enough where it can be directed into a drain pan or jug.
Then twist the valve casing counter-clockwise and pull out. This can be done by hand so no need for any tools, then let the oil flow out.
This takes a few minutes.
Once the oil has drained, here is a close up of how the valve works. To close off the valve, push in the outer case and then twist clockwise. It should snap into place.
Then to open the valve for draining again, twist the case counter-clockwise and then pull out.
When done draining the oil, close the valve and remove the hose. Wipe up any drips from when the hose is removed if needed.
Next is removing the oil filter. This has screw-on canister filters, similar to what you’d find on a vehicle. You should be able to loosen the filter by hand. If not, then use a large pair of interlocking pliers, strap wrench, or oil filter socket. Put a paper towel under the filter housing, the oil will come out. I’ve already ran into this and did have quite the clean up after, so make sure the drain pan is below this area too.
Use a clean cloth to wipe the sealing surface on the filter housing. Any dirt on this surface may cause sealing issues resulting in an oil leak.
Compare the old and new filters, the housing mating surfaces should be the same. The new filter is higher which is fine, there is enough room for it to fit.
Remove the new filter from its packaging, dip your finger in the new oil, and apply a light layer of oil to the filter gasket. This will help seat the seal.
Screw on the filter. Once that filter makes contact on the seal with the filter housing, turn the filter 1/4 to 1/2 turn more for tightening.
Clean around the dipstick area with a clean rag, remove the dipstick, and fill the engine with oil. If you’re careful enough, a funnel isn’t necessary. Oil weights will be based on what type of climate your tractor is exposed to. I’m using conventional oil, 10w30. With the filter, the engine oil capacity is 1.8L or 1.9 quarts.
To check the oil level, ensure the tractor is on level ground, then remove the dipstick and wipe off the dipstick with a clean rag. Reinstall the dipstick, turn it counterclockwise until the threaded cap falls slightly, then remove. Do not thread on the cap.
The oil level should be between the minimum and maximum lines in the cross-hatched area.
After that, start the engine, inspect for any leaks, and then you’re officially done.

Love this, i have a jdstx that only turns over it doesnt stat. MY dad, (being the one that knows engines more than me) Says it's the carburetor and it's not getting any fuel. Any idea what's wrong,

Thank you! Is the spark plug wet? If not, then it's not getting fuel. You can also test out if it has proper spark by dumping a small amount of fuel in the cylinder, it'll run for a second if everything else is fine.
