***Please read the description and review the video before starting your transmission fluid change.
This video is for the 722.6 5-Speed transmission only.
-It's important that your transmission gearbox temperature reaches 80 degrees Celsius before check the fluid level. The level must be between the low and high fill marks. If its too high please drain off excess fluid by removing the drain bolt (you do not have to drain the whole transmission again).
Regarding the transmission pan Please remove the forward bolts first then the middle bolts as this will remove the excess oil that is left behind in the transmission pan.
-To protect your pan bolts, apply Copper Slip anti-seize compound to the threads to prevent corrosion.
The quantity of fluid to be replaced varies from car to car.
7.5 liters is recommended for the initial fill. It's also recommended to have a few liters extra as a backup, however you may not use all 7.5 liters. (We only used 3.5 liters and It's ok to mix old fluid with new fluid).
Torque specs:
Transmission pan bolts: 8Nn.
Drain bolt: 20Nm

Hi Vortaz57, Thank you for your appreciation of the video. The sequence is this way because, if the front of the car is lowered all the way down while the rear is still elevated, then there is a high risk that the front bumper will hit the jack, trapping the jack under the bumper. Also, if either side is lowered while the other side is left at an extreme height, then chances for extracting the jack successfully are lowered.

I changed the radiator on my 99 S320, forgot to tighten the transmission line and while driving O lost almost all the fluid which then caused my car to no longer shift, I had to tow it home, tighten the line and needed to know how to add transmission oil ba ck into the car, this video was a perfect help, and you are truly a badass

Because this way you will never be able to change more than 40-50% of gearbox oil in 722.6. So don't fool yourself. You are only partially refreshed oil but 50% of old muck is still there poisoning a new fluid.

Hi Stchman, Mercedes uses a universal dipstick instead of a dipstick that is tailor made for every car. Because some tubes may vary in length the dipstick has to be long enough to fit each tube which means that it will usually be longer than the tube itself. If left in the fill tube, the dipstick would stick out and not create a tight seal, increasing the chance for dirt to get into the transmission.
@GarageDynamics

Hi Kristerpher, One way to find out is to look under your car. Look for your part number located on the transmission housing. Next to your part number will be your transmission model number. If it is 722.6xx then the transmission may be the same. It is always recommended to take your car to a licensed Mercedes-Benz mechanic to get the most accurate advice.

Hi Aly Abidali, Draining the fluid in the pan at regular intervals will keep the fluid in the torque converter fresh. Be sure that your ATF fluid is compatible with old fluid. This will ensure maximum performance from your transmission.

Excellent presentation but you forgot to replace the electrical socket that connects the transmission to the computer. This tends to leak and wick transmission fluid up the wires into the computer and causes failures. It's recommended for all MB transmissions, known fault. $30 part, cheaper at a Chrysler Dodge dealer since they used the same transmission in the 300C, crossfire, and many other cars. Unfortunately needs to be done when the transmission is empty.

Changing the fluid in the sump pan is only a PARTIAL fluid change. Ideally all the old fluid should be flushed out.
@kendrickminchew1855
@kendrickminchew1855 7 лет назад
Dave Green it all depends on the condition of the transmission
@badkid73
@badkid73 5 лет назад
Flushing can be dangerous. If you really care about your transmission, drain it this way and refill. Then drive a few blocks and shift through all the gears. Then drain again and change the gasket and filter. You lose the cost of liters of automatic transmission fluid. You will dilute out the 2L of old fluid that may remain in the torque converter, and it's a much safer procedure. However, if you regularly change your transmission fluid and filter, then the effective partial transmission fluid drainage is adequate.

Any of those jack stands fail, you're knackered. I'd never recommend placing all four corners of a car on jack stands alone. Reason I say this, my uncle did the exact same, and one failed, crushing him to death. (He only used two at the front end) Use drive on ramps, back wheels chocked, and accompany this with trolley Jack for added safety.

I'll trust my life to four burly ESCO jack stands which are the stands that a German car should be on anyway. People should not be using axle stands to support jack support areas designed for a flat top ESCO type jack stand. But I do use a combination of Race Ramps chocks and stands for most things.

So with a Mercedes, you need to unlock the transmission fill tube, insert a dipstick into the fill tube, check the fluid, and then put a new lock on the fill tube? Why not just leave the dipstick in the fill tube?

Your intentions with the video are noble,teaching people how to do stuff that is not supposed to be done "as per dishonest manufacturer recommendation",however i believe that most of the ones who buy that trap of a car are the ones who have manicured fingernails and don't touch "dirty" stuff,thus unlikely to do anything mechanical,aside not being able to afford hiring anybody like you to do the job,anyways,to be on the constructive criticism side,i'll buy a Chevy dipstick on the junkyard,stick to the filler tube and cut and file the level marks to make it fit. Cheap and effective.

Nice video, good explanation but "changing" the fluid this way is pointless. This is not fluid change and it is a waste of time and money. The oil should be drained of torque converter as well. If the tourque converer has no drain plug (there is no plug in newer 722.6 transmissions) then you need to flush the transmission with fresh sucked fluid with opened circle by removing radiator pipe or connecting the hose in the place of the oil filter.

Thats NOT a complete oil change procedure in 722.6. Dont fool yourself. It is a nice video of 50% oil replacement ie refreshing a bit at the best. Complete oil capacity of this gearbox is about 8 liters. This way only will let you drain about 3.7-4l as good half is stuck in torque converter and lines.
@iamher6422
@iamher6422 5 лет назад
Sergey Bobyk I was thinkin’ the same thing, but then again, it would be rather risky to do a full flush on cars with high mileage.🤷🏼‍♂️
@sergeybobyk7483
@sergeybobyk7483 5 лет назад
@@iamher6422 I just done my car today with full flush myself. The truth is that partual replacement even with tray removal at best fets only 3.5l of oil. Therefore it is only 40% with a lot of gunk left in. I just looked at this mess and wanted it out. It actually extremely simple but need an extra 10l of fluid. All that required is to disconnect upper (return) pipe to gearbox. There is a neat joint on a left side of box and stick 22mm silicon tube on it. So put back a new filter and cleaned lid, cleaned lid, 4l of new fluid and turn it on. Every 2l out turn off engine and put another 2l. Repeat. Once you see pink -job done. Just top up on hot box.

Hello Cars Unlimited, The reason for raising the car on all four corners is to ensure a proper refill. The car must be level to achieve this. If you just need to get to the transmission pan only to remove it and not refill it, then raising the car on all four corners is not necessary. However, if you plan to refill the transmission then it is necessary to raise the car on all four corners. I hope this helps. Cheers!

Hi Kerry Flynn, Are you only missing the dipstick, or are you missing the whole tube that attaches to your transmission? If you have located your fill tube, but can't find the dipstick, that's because Mercedes doesn't provide a transmission dipstick. You have to purchase it separately. The newer 722.9 (7speed) transmission fill procedure is a bit different. If you're unsure of the procedure please seek professional help and you can always visit mbworld.org for lots of great advice.

Hi, Great video. I sow many videos on flushing the transmission, and I was wondering, do you think that is a good and necessary thing to do, or this way will be sufficient? Kind Regards

Great video!! I thought that the transmission was sealed and that it was not necessary to change the fluid of the transmission. So, when it is necessary to to change the fluid of the transmission? Thank you!
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 9 лет назад
Hi Horacio Bastidas, Thank you! The transmission fluid should be changed every 25,000 miles.
@racekar80
@racekar80 6 лет назад
These were once considered sealed for life, but after many failures at about 100,000 miles MB changed their recommendations to every 60K. It's cheap insurance, these transmissions are very strong and reliable if maintained. The 5 speed is one of the best, only transmission that could handle the torque of the V12 bi turbo.

Great video. Question... I have a 2003 CL55, can I follow the same procedure to change my transmission fluid? Thanks.
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 10 лет назад
Hi BGPHILLY1, Thank you for your support! Your car should be fitted with a 722.6XX transmission. You can confirm this by looking directly under the transmission where the engine and transmission meet. You will see a series of numbers identifying your transmission model. If it is 722.6XX then the procedure is the same.

Hi bro I have 2011 GL 550 , what fluid is good for this suv I live in freaking cold area wich can go to -30 degree at north Dakota aldo is this method wirks for this suv?
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 9 лет назад
Hi eky Storm, The procedure will be different than the way it is shown for the S class. It can be different depending on whether you have 4matic or not. As for the recommended fluid for cold weather, 75w 90 synthetic gear oil is good because it has a low viscosity that will work well in colder climates. It's always best to check your owners manual for the correct oil for your car. www.mbworld.org is also a great place to go for advice.

Hey Skip Art, what about draining the Torque Converter plug? I've heard both sides about you should drain it and people saying it doesn't need to be drained....thoughts? Great video!
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 8 лет назад
+Kevin Berar Hi Kevin Berar, Thank you! It doesn't hurt to drain it, but if you change your transmission fluid frequently then you don't need to drain the torque converter.

Excellent video!! Thanks! Question - Do you worry about changing the o-ring on the electrical connector for the conductor plate?
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 7 лет назад
Hi youtoobe169! Yes. It is important to change the o-ring, but it is not required for the transmission service. Changing the o-ring is good for preventative maintenance to ensure that transmission oil does not leak which can happen when the o-ring gets old and hard.
@youtoobe169

Thanks for the reply. One more question. I think I may have put about 1/2 quart too much in. Do you think that this transmission can tolerate that? I did not have any issues driving (i.e. coming out the vent hole, etc)

Is there a diy guide for replacing the whole of the ATF fluid as I understand that with this method only half is replaced.
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 10 лет назад
Hi Irving Waters, I do not have a diy guide for flushing the whole transmission. The process is a little bit more involved, but straight forward. Frequent fluid and filter changes will still provide great results and extend transmission life. You can also visit the fourms at mbworld.org for more information about flushing the 722.6 transmission.

Got it sorted mate I changed 3 litres of genuine Mercedes ATF and the car has stopped vibrating in drive. The other oil was cheap Eurocarparts and the gearbox didn't like it.

u still have about 3 litres old fluid there and u need to have engine running when u measure it
@jadesluv
@jadesluv 6 лет назад
Maybe 4 liters of old dirty fluid still left in the torque conveter and cooler. Which mean new fluid lubricty will be reduced and likely wear out transmission prematurely. Its not hard to change out all 8 quarts if you know what your doing. And as dirty as that fluid was when drained it from the pan a full flush would be much much better.

VERY informative tutorial, would this work for a 1999 slk230? its got the same idea too. hope to hear from you if i can just change it myself, since the dealer charged me 350 bucks to drain and change the filter for my slk230
@GarageDynamics
@GarageDynamics 10 лет назад
Hi Jeffrey Festejo, Thank you. It looks like your car has the same transmission (722.6), so the procedure should be the same, assuming minor differences that would be tailored for your car. Please check www.mbworld.org or consult a Mercedes-Benz Mechanic to make sure the transmission is the same.
