This is a step by step instructional video on how to change the transmission fluid on a Harley Davidson Softail. While I’m working on a 2006 Night Train (FXSTBI), this video applies to pretty much all Twin Cam Softail years & models with stock 5-speed & 6-speed transmissions because the drain plug has not changed locations in years. I’m not sure about aftermarket transmissions, however.
This job is fairly straight forward. The hard part is getting the bike up in the air and secured. I’ll cover various tips & tricks to make this job quick, clean & easy. You can have this job done in less then a half hour, even if you take your time.
Check your owners/service manual for the proper fluid level check procedure, fluid capacity and fluid type for your transmission.
Models include (but not limited to) Night Train (FXSTB & FXSTBI), Fat Boy (FLSTF & FLSTFI), Fat Boy Lo (FLSTFB & FLSTFBI), Heritage Series (FLST, FLSTC & FLSTS), Standard (FXST & FXSTI), Cross Bones (FLSTSB & FLSTSBI), Rocker (FXCW & FXCWC), Deuce (FXSTD & FXSTDI), Custom (FXSTC) & Springer (FXSTS & FXSTSI) and probably others that I’ve forgotten about.

Your exhaust comes right up on the dipstick just like my husbands 2000 FXD Dyna Super Glide. So your tip on how to treat the removal of the dipstick is just what we needed to see. Thank you. Thanks a lot. Pulling the spring out on a Softail is pretty simple. Get the front end off the ground, remove the nut from the top of the fork, compress the front end to push the spring out the top. Reverse it to re-install. When the bike is off the ground the spring is under little to no pressure on Softails. So you don't have to worry about it shooting up at you. Good luck.

You talked to me like I have never changed the fluid in my Harley. Thanks, lol. You don't just say do this and do that. you explain every step. Great job, thx. Just by doin my own fluid changes I save 100s of dollars. Owning a Harley is like ownin a Ferrari. Its a freaken American motorcycle and everything involved with them is bookoo bucks. Any money I can save along with the knowledge is great. I gotta wobble at 40mph and I am trying to figure out the problem. Harley shop wants 450$ to fix it and they don't even know the cause? With RU-vid and sites like this I will have no problem. Thx again.

Thanks a lot. I appreciate it. Wobbles at specific speeds typically indicate an unbalanced tire/wheel (maybe a wheel weight came loose?). But it could be other issues too. I'd start by taking the bike (or better yet, and cheaper, just the wheels) to a local shop to rebalance the wheels and then see what happens. It does not need to be an HD dealer. Most Indie shops can balance a tire fairly inexpensively (call ahead of course). I've got videos covering how to easily remove the front & rear tires. They might help you out too. Good luck.

Great video ! I will say though that in colder environments heavy to medium weight gear oil is not recommended due to gear tolerance and warm up times . I’ve had experiences with floating or spinning an outer bearing race due to cold gear oil but I do recommend something thicker than 20w 50 oil. Side note: when running on the track Circuit, I’ll run 10 weight hydraulic fluid in trans for short runs it cuts down on bearing friction and let’s the gears fly but should be drained after each run . Simple trick nocks a 1/2 second of 1/4 mile

Great job with good insights. I added a center stand to my bike so i don't have to jack it.....I have a lift and a jack. Craftsman was a good choice for the jack. When I bought mine it was the same price as the Harbor Freight which is not as good.

I have a 2010 HD FXSTC - six speed. 96ci. I have had my transmission rebuilt by a qualified HD service shop. However, I have noticed that occasionally, shifting from 1st into 2nd is difficult. As if there is some slight binding going on. This only happens between these two gears, 2nd to 3rd to 4th to 5th to 6th is fine. I have taken the bike back to the shop and they graciously re adjusted the shift cable, and the clutch, and it has improved somewhat; but upon occasion, shifting out of 1st to 2nd requires some extra effort. I have a full pull at the clutch lever, so that "feels" comfortable. Anytime I start up the bike, I allow a full minute or more to let the engine/fluids properly warm up while in neutral. I get on, pull in clutch handle, and down shift into 1st, there is a noticable "clunk" at it goes into gear, (as if the idle is too high, but I've been told by HD mechanics that this is "normal" operation for any HD.......) Once in 1st, I ease out the clutch handle, apply a slight throttle, and the bike takes off just fine, right at the end of the rpm for 1st gear, around 15mph or 20mph, I try to shift up, and there is where the binding happens. In another scenerio, I have found out that IF I wait to shift into 2nd at 20 or even 25mph, sometimes it shifts easily. Which is strange enough. So........is it truly something to do with the timing of how I'm shifting? or is it something to do with the rpm's required for HD and this 6spd trans? I used to own several Kawasaki Vulcans, and they were all 5spd. This is my first experience with a 6spd, so, I would appreciate your input and advice on this issue. That clunk from Neutral into 1st is normal for Harley transmissions (5 & 6 speeds). If you pull the clutch lever in all the way the RPMs of the motor, or speed of the bike, should not have any impact on your ability to shift. You should be able to go through all of the gears at a dead stop, with maybe just a slight forward/back rocking to get it to change gears. Pulling the clutch lever should completely disconnect the motor from the transmission. Its hard to diagnose your problem from my keyboard. But something does sound off. It could be as simple as needing a clutch & clutch cable adjustment, or a sticking shifter linkage, or as bad as something wrong in the tranny. Double check the clutch adjustment (I have a video on how to do it, its really easy, ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yf-5_XL-mMU.html). Also check the shifter linkage joints. The dust boots sometimes crack, water gets in and rusts causing it to stick. If the dust boot is broken, shoot some WD-40 or White Lithium Grease in the broken boot and work it in a little and see if that helps (its a temporary fix, btw). If not, then I’d take it back to the shop to have them reproduce the problem and fix it. Good luck...

Thanks a lot. No I don’t have one for the Primary yet. But its a pretty simple drain & fill procedure. Just drain it out the drain plug on the bottom of the primary and refill through the access panel or derby cover whole. Check your owners manual for how many oz of fluid to put in. Different years & different models have different fill amounts. So make sure to get the correct amount for your year & model bike. Good luck...

Thanks a lot. I actually recorded a primary oil change video a couple months ago but haven't gotten around to editing it. I have a backlog of about 20 videos recorded by not edited yet. With work I have a limited amount of free time. :-( But its not that hard of a job. You pull the derby cover (T-27 torx head bit), drain the oil out the bottom of the primary. replace the drain plug o-ring if it is damaged. Put the drain plug back in (I don't remember the torque spec off hand, but just snug it down). Fill the primary with the exact amount & type of oil specified in your owners/services manual. Different years & models have different amounts, so go by whats in your manual. Then put the derby cover back on (replace the gasket if it is damaged). Tighten in a star pattern. IMS, its about 80 in/lbs of torque. don't over tighten or you'll strip the bolts. Good luck...

An '04 with only 6k miles? That thing is barely even broken in yet. Transmission fluid doesn't really effect how a transmission shifts. A clutch & primary chain adjustment and shifter linkage inspection would likely have a more positive effect. Good luck.

Hey Pet Rock, thanks for this. I used your video to take off the rear wheel last week and re-install it on my brothers 2007 HD soft tail Custom.. All good. Yesterday he asked me if we can change the tranny oil and I said sure and with your video should be a piece of cake. Now I ride a Kawasaki Vaquero 1700 and it only uses 1 type of oil for lubrication. For the life of me, I can't figure out why HD use 3 different types. I'm not knocking HD but I don't get it and of course I do all the work on my bro's HD.

The owners & service manual lists 20W-50 for Engine, Primary & Trans. Some people choose to use thicker or thinner oils in the engine, or gear oil in the tranny or oils like ATF in the primary. It's a personal choice. I choose to use 20W-50 in the engine & primary and 75W-90 in the trans.

With the tranny, it doesn't really matter because it is basically a sealed box with gears inside. So you can drain it hot, warm or cold. You'll just have to wait longer for it to drain fully when cold. Thanks for watching & commenting. I appreciate it.

Seems like I have done that b/4 but when filling back up you have to watch the level as there isn't a dip stick. Seems like you fill it to the bottom of a gear but don't quote me on this. And the transmission was really fun getting between the shocks. Hope you have a nice holiday weekend. I am in the middle of replacing my rocker box gaskets as had leaks. I don't have a video camera or would have made a video on that subject.

Its a lot simpler then that. Your owners manual has a spec for how much fluid goes into the primary. Just put that much in and no more. Different years have different specs. Good luck...

A Jiffy Stand is also known as the Kick Stand. Its the little bar you pull out when you park your bike and lean it over to the left side. Hope that helps.

You correctly mention that the stick is getting a bit damaged overtime - seemingly all transmission oil dipsticks since the Evo's are getting somewhat damaged by the clutch cable that runs too close to the actual shaft of the stick for my taste. I agree that this won't damage the gears and cogs but I'm slightly paranoid so I chopped the shaft off with an angle grinder and "smoothened" it with sandpaper (it's real soft, almost like butter). To regularly check the level I have a spare dipstick at hand. Apparently some aftermarket stuff like Baker are not suffering from being chafed so easily...but I rather have nothing obstructing the clutch cable at all. Just my 2 lousy euro cents.

The clutch cable doesn’t come close to the dip-stick on my bike. The dipstick is actually angled away from the clutch cable. The chrome coming off is typically due to a poor chrome job by the manufacturer. But if your’s was rubbing, hacking it off and keeping a spare around to actually check the level is a good idea. What type of oil do you recommend? Some say redline, and others say mobil 1. I put the HD stuff in and dumped it after 1 ride because it was not shifting as well. Then I put lucas gear oil in and it seemed better. . Also what do you recommend for primary? 03 FXDP Honeycomb hideout Thanks

What oil to use is a discussion that will never end. There are tons of threads/videos online about this topic for pretty much every make & model vehicle in existence. Use whatever synthetic oil you have available in your area and in your price range. I've never understood how people claim that the oil they use effects the shifting quality. The oil is for the gears, not really the shift fork. Use whatever oil makes you happy. The manufacturer isn't really important. Its the grade oil and that it's synthetic that matters most IMO. I run a good synthetic 75W-90 gear oil in the transmission and a good synthetic 20W-50 in the engine & primary. Good luck.

@@michaelnathan8549, you were mis-informed. Synthetics are perfectly fine in all holes. I've been running full synthetics in all holes in my bike since I bought it new in '06. 95k miles later and no problems. HD even ships their CVO models with their synthetic oils inside. The trans & primary are the same in CVO vs regular. Hope that helps.

I have a 1999 softail standard and cannot find a drain plug between shocks underneath, and it appears there isn't really room for one either. There is a very small screw on the right side cover, down at the bottom, between the cover's mounting bolts that someone told me is the drain. I don't know, seems awfully small for the viscosity of gear oil. Do you know anything about this?

I'm not entirely sure. I haven't worked on a that vintage bike in decades and don't have the manuals for them anymore. Is it an EVO or TwinCam? Could your bike have an aftermarket transmission? I vaguely remember a small drain plug on the side of the transmission case, but also remember one on the bottom. But I could be mixing up touring vs softail or different years. Sorry I can't be of more help. Good luck.

Sorry, I don't (yet). Its a pretty simple process though. Pull off the derby cover, then remove the drain plug. When all the fluid has drained out, put the plug back in, fill up through the derby hole with oil (different years & models have different amounts of fluid, so check your owners manual) and put the derby cover back on. IMS, it's 80 inch/lbs of torque. While you are in there it would be a good time to adjust the clutch. I have a video on how to do that too. Good luck.

Regardless of what procedure you read on the internet, your owners manual is the bible in cases like this. Different years & models have different procedures & capacities. If you don't have the owners manual for your ride, you can get/order one from your local HD dealer or HD website. Hope that helps.

Yeah, routine maintenance is engine oil, trans oil, primary oil, fork oil, brake fluid, clutch adjustment, primary chain adjustment (if you don't have an auto-adjuster installed), and steering head stem nut adjustment. There is more and they have different milage intervals that these maintenance items need to be performed. I would advise getting the factory service manual for your year/model bike. It will have all the maintenance stuff listed with milage intervals & instructions on how to do it. It will pay for itself in the first service. Good luck.

I’m hoping the others are not over filled... he said he changed it every 1k miles or so ... when I texted him n asked why it was over filled he didn’t act like he knew .

@@redflint7651, make sure you follow the instructions in the owners manual for checking fluid levels. The procedure is different for different models & years. Some have the bike on the kick stand and some don't. So before sucking oil out, make sure to you are checking the fluid correctly. Changing the oil every 1k miles is a complete waste of time, oil & money. Factory is every 5k. With that said, whenever you buy a new (to you) vehicle, assume that all the fluids have never been changed and that the previous owner was an idiot. I always recommend changing all the fluids & adjusting the clutch after purchase. That way you have a bike in a known maintenance state.

I have no idea. Probably close to what mine takes if it is a 5 speed trans. You should check your owners manual. Don't guess or go off of what sounds good. Alternatively, you could also slowly/gradually add fluid, an ounce at a time, until it hits the correct level on the dip-stick. Unless the dealer looked it up, I doubt they would know off the top of their head the amount of fluid that a 15yr old bike takes. Especially since different models & years take different amounts. Most dealer service techs only remember the specs for the last couple years since that is what they primarily work on. Not 15yr old bikes. Just sayin'...

+Eric Fleischman, removing all the old gas in the tank and draining the carburetor float bowl and refilling the tank with fresh gas would be a good start. If it was stored with gas still in it then that gas is pretty much garbage and hopefully it didn't turn into varnish. If it still has the battery from eight years ago it is likely dead and a new one will be needed. I'd also squirt a little bit of oil into each cylinder to lubricate the cylinder walls & piston rings. Other then that, try and start it up and see what happens. It will likely take some time for the new fuel to get into the carb, but only run the starter for about 10 seconds at a time, giving some time in-between, otherwise you could overheat/burn out the starter or flood the motor. Good luck and ask away. I'm not a iron head expert, but those motors are so simple compared to a TwinCam you should be able to follow standard diagnostic procedures to get it running again. Like make sure it has fuel, air & spark to get it started.

Yes. Righty tightie, lefty loosey. The plug should not be that tight. Make sure you are playing with the correct bolt. There is more then one at the bottom of the motor, one of which is red locktighted into place so it will only turn with heat.

I Live in Ohio. I put maybe 1500 miles on my 09 Softail every year. Then it sits in a garage, starting it and running once a month till spring. Is it necessary to change all three oils every year.

Sorry for the late reply. No, it is not necessary in my opinion. Oil doesn't really age like other fluids like brake fluid or gas. I'd go purely off of milage. Hope that helps.

To have a filter a pump would be needed to push fluid through the filter.. Harleys don't have trans fluid pumps. So no trans filter. Re paper vs cloth, use whatever makes you happy. Even if there was a filter, you would have to dump chunks of paper towel, not just fibers, to clog a filter. So I wouldn't worry about it.

Those lines have a little bit of flex in them from the flexible coupler just above the plastic clip that holds the two lines together. You can try to push the lines out of the way a little to get clearance for your tools. Assuming your clearance problem is small. You can also put some painters tape on the area your tool is coming into contact with the line (and/or put the tape on the socket itself) to prevent scratches. Alternatively, invest in some long reach allen sockets or long L type allen keys. Good luck.

Some want it hot, some cold, some with the bike upright, some with it on the kickstand, some with the dipstick resting on the hole, some with the dipstick screwed all the way in. Check your owners manual for your year/model bike for the definitive answer. Good luck.

Hey Whats crackin PR? Everything ok here! its Rich with the 2005 ,15 anniv, fatboy. I'm the ass that couldn't get the slack outta my clutch(Barnett) cable, when I did the clutch adjustment, on your other video.( the Barnett and Harley cable are totally diff) I just changed my trans. and primary fluids with a brand called "REDLINE". You ever hear of it? its been 2 weeks I have it in...and what a difference. smoother shifting, through all gears-finding neutral now, is a breeze! gotta let me know what you think! ttys, I hope, ty-Richie.

Yes, I've heard of Redline, but I've never used it. I've been using Amsoil in my bike pretty much since I bought it new. Use whatever oil brand you want, its your ride. No such thing as 'the best' oil. Glad to hear that changing your fluids smoothed things out for you and you got your clutch cable figured out. Enjoy the ride!

I'm not sure what your mechanic meant. Amsoil is just synthetic fluid like Mobile1 or HD's Syn-3. I've been running Amsoil in my bike since 500miles (85k now) and have no problems. I don't have any racing stuff on my bike either other then the 95" Big Bore kit.

Pet Rock's Garage Hi..i meant a mechanic, that adjusted my clutch,(SAID THAT STUPID SHIT). I have a 95'' ci also- with twin cams-noisy fucker!!! sounds like loose lifters, hitting the top valve cover(tap-tap-tap-tap). I have 17,000 miles on a 05, 15 anniv, fatboy! I just changed my primary and tranny with REDLINE(tranny-75w-90)(primary fluid.heavy duty red), last week. I let it drain over night, then put 24 oz back in(tranny)(and 26 oz of primary), now I see a little drip, under primary drain plug. I put a new o-ring on the drain plug, and keeped the same diaphragm derby cover as you have-its fine-no rips/tares. when I feel up behind, the main shaft drive pully, its alittle wet??? what do you think, Pet rock?? I'm stumbling over here, bro?? the tranny breather hose-is dry-yikes!!!

I seriously doubt the leak is due to the oil you are using. Synthetics don't cause leaks. But they often have detergents in it that 'clean out' existing leaks that were plugged with dirt. The leak you describe is pretty common. It is likely one of the seals for the shaft that goes between the primary & transmission. If you use different oils for the primary & tranny then you can tell which one by the oil that is coming out. Its a PITA to fix because you have to disassemble the entire Primary assembly to get to the seal. Good luck.

+Ben Baker, as I mentioned in the video (around 8:28) you’ll get a different answer depending on who you ask. The service manual says to use 20W-50 oil, like you put in the motor. I run 75W-90 gear oil in my transmission. Its up to you which one you choose and which manufacturer.

Use whatever interval your owners/service manual says to use. Different years/models have different intervals for some reason. Don't go off what someone said on an internet forum, or RU-vid or anything like that. With that said, for my bike the service manual says engine: 5k, primary: 10k & trans 20k. Although I do change the trans every 15k for no real reason other than I find it easier to remember. It isn't better to change it more often. Its kind of a waste of money/oil to change it more than necessary. 10k is definitely way too short of an interval though. Hope that helps.

Nope. Six speeds didn't come standard on Softails until '07. My bike is an '06. Also, it was '88ci (1450cc) stock and I upgraded it to a 95ci (1550cc). HD didn't come out with the 96ci (1584cc) until '07.

The best source of information to work on your own bike is to buy the Factory Service Manual for your year & model bike from your HD dealer. It will have all the information you could possibly need to do maintenance and repairs. It will pay for itself when you do your first oil change yourself. Good luck.
