Remove rear mounted ground- link. And also flip the voltage on the Avalon = noise gone.Check page 13. make sure your not charging any phones in the room and make sure its also connected to a power conditioner. That stuck cable has to be the route of the problem since its a stuck cable. its stuck for a reason.Hope this helps =) www.avalondesign.com/manuals/Vt737sp_Manual_2016.pdf
As you've discovered, you can't tell tube wear by looking at them. Vacuum tubes are not like "light bulbs" when they wear out. You can tell tube wear by their degraded sound (by loss of upper frequencies, loss of detail, loss of tightness in the bass, hissing, loss of output, etc.), and you can tell tubes are worn by using a tube test meter. Those are the two ways to tell tube wear. Avalon rates the tubes for 5,000 hours in the user manual (pg. 39) and recommends changing tubes every 2 years in units that are "used regularly". The next thing you brought up was if it makes a difference what socket the tubes go in. The reason for Tubes to be designated for specific sockets is because of what's referred to as the "gain staging" that they have been tested to work for. If you put them in different sockets, you risk introducing noise from noisier tubes being earlier in the preamp gain stage circuitry. So, yes, they need to go in the sockets they are designated for. And finally - All tubes require a "break-in" period during which their bottom end drops down to reproduce lows better, their upper frequencies and overall clarity improves (in most cases significantly), and the micro-detail in the mids becomes much, much more defined. The recommended minimum break-in time for preamp tubes is 48 hours. After that, very slight improvements in sound will continue over the next 48 hours or so, but in most cases will be hardly noticeable at all to the majority of individuals.
I would still keep it. It's probably in need of a good cleaning and I would prop it on something to help with the airflow. I have mine sitting on four hard rubber caps that you put on the bottom of a chair to raise it up . Also I'm concerned about the cable that's stuck in there, perhaps that might be causing some kind of interference. Either way it needs to be addressed. Also get some compressed air and spray off that dust inside, that kind of buildup can cause some adverse reactions to the circuitry which also can contribute to noise. I would also pull the tubes back out and placed in again, they can be finicky if not seated properly which might be why the compressor is acting up. If after doing all that, you still get that hiss then I would have Avalon look at it since it might be something with the circuitry itself. Good luck!
What your hearing in the computer fan. You’re gonna have to run it directly into the interface. In Pro Tools or any DAW you’re gonna have to noise gate in post production
you dont need high-gain on with a 416, thats for very low gain mics like ribbons or other low gain mics. High Gain does just that boost gain, and makes the noise floor louder.
I know this is years later but those numbers on the tube boxes have to match the numbers on your Avalon board when you put them in. By the way what was up with the other issues? Did you ever figure out what was the problem?
Would love to hear or see what your settings are on the unit with the 416. I have one and always like to hear or see what/how someone is setting it up. The sound is great! Really punchy and not overly processed! BOTH videos are very entertaining. I am subscribing! thx.
The Avalon vt737sp were never known as great compressors. And in recording vocals going into the DAW very little compression is the thing to do. You can always use compression after recording. And now in newer pro tool versions you can control the loudness by riding the fader in a write the column adjuster. They have videos on RU-vid that show you how to do that
PharaohLawLess1 yeah after a while the new tubes seemed to settle in and it’s sound so good now. No need for a noise gate I ended up getting control over that. It’s so true though, the compressor is sooooo slight and didn’t really show any kind of effect unless I had the high gain on. On top of that, the tubes brought so much more life to my Avalon that I actually have to set my out put down so it’s not so hot, even with the preamp at 0. Thanks for the advice bro
Hi , i have also buy an Avalon 737sp 7 years old ... the Autotune sucks in the Uad Apollo Twin. Do you think its time to change my tubes ? Have you an experience with Avalon and UAD combination ? Thx a lot Musa
If you haven’t changed the tubes in 7 years. Absolutely yes, change your tubes. Sorry have not tried the Apollo with the UAD, I am looki g to get one though.
Bro RU-vid need to Connect the special ground conntecing with a cable to Your microphone for getting supersonic Performance. And You need to turn of Wifi in Your Room for not digital Sound issues
What's wrong with your hands? Build it yourself? The materials to build an isolation box for the computer is cheap. Have a friend help you build one. The fan is only a few db in sound so build a dog house to block the noise.
If that cable is stuck that could have been the issue, i had a bad cable stuck before and it game grounding problem to the the preamp from the mic and cables go bad all the time. that cable being stuck there for that long and you pulling on it could have been the issue
I would if i could bro, but i dont own a 103. The one i had for my review was lent to me for a week. I think im going to sell my TLM 49 and Aphex towards a U87. Then ill be done!!!
I was thinking about this question, i would have to go with the 103. When ever i had to do character work outside of my studio, i would usually see an 103, never saw a MK4. Whenever i would use a MKH416 outside of my studio it would normally be for Promo work our Narration. I am currently in the early phases of an animation job and sent my voice sample out to the engineers and they mixed the other actors into a scene. I noticed one thing off the bat, my voice stood out over the others and didnt seem to gell with the other VOs. It was kind of distracting for me. And its a conversation i need to have with the engineer. He loved the sound of it and said it was super clear and stuff, but to me, it was a little to dominating compared to the others. Probably a common problem when you have people recording all over the place and not using the same mic. Just an observation
its not your Avalon. the fresh tubes will revamp its sound but its your mic cable. Its cheap. You need to be using monster. a bad cable will introduce interference.
Provides clean AC power to sensitive electrical equipment. Usually this is used for home or office applications and has up to 10 or more receptacles or outlets and commonly provides surge protection as well as noise filtering..
Yes, I need to upgrade myself. Tried to get to B&H today in Manhattan, Stuck 30 Minutes at one traffic light. I said the heck with it. Ill shop online, lol
I havent given up completely Lo, When I get there, Ill do a VR to you to show you the outside & inside. Something tells me, I will lose a lot of money once I walk in the doors, lol
Hard for me to watch comic video's like this because of me...all the not sure analogies had my brain on pause throughout the presentation lol...I'm always serious when it comes to hi-end gear as I have the Avalon 737 along with the Manley VOXBOX and the LA 610 but I am not getting any hum of any kind at this point, the glass breaking brick throwing and dub voice overs gave me an array of comic entertainment, you should get a show it might be great for television!
Usually when your Avalon starts sounding more noisy then usual. Also depends how often you use it. Some people have to change it out every 6mnth some people have to change it every 3 years.
I wouldn’t be to hasty yet, keep the research going. More then a year after this video my Avalon is sounding just fine. Although, I would like to send it to a Avalon for a proper tune up, but that’s a luxury, one day maybe, but I’m loving and getting work with this to this day.
