Be sure to run qt5ct and lxappearance from root as well. Otherwise root requiring apps like synaptic, gparted, and timeshift will remain blinding white.

Hi DT. Love your channel which has inspired me a lot to dive further into Linux and Xmonad. I am a robotics engineer and I am therefore inside when I program and outside when I test systems. I was wondering if you might want to make a video where you can switch (system-wide meaning menu bar, terminal, browser etc) between light and dark theme, with a simple key binding. Or maybe you just have a good hint. I am running Xmonad and Polybar on Linux Mint. Thanks in advance. BR. Allan

@@Subzearo What's wrong with i3? Just because it's easy to configure doesn't mean it isn't a proper window manager. I have been using i3 for over a year now and it's great.

@@crazychicken0378 It is really easy to configure and it has intuitive syntax. I recommend it for beginners (because I am a beginner myself and found it quite easy to use). Once you set up the wallpaper, that initial fear will go away (because generally a black wallpaper feels like something is wrong) and you can configure keybindings after. I also recommend rofi for the app launcher and polybar for the status bar. Now you have nearly infinite customizability in your hands. I know it isn't extensible as config file is not written in the language of the window manager but that won't be problem if you're a beginner (and know practically nothing about scripting)

Thank you dt, i have both lxappearance and qt5ct on my (debian) system and it bugs the heck out of me to get virtualbox look somewhat right to the dark gtk theme i use. So kvantum is not perfekt but wayy better than the blinding white of vbox before. Is there a qt theme out there that matches arc-dark?

Please make a video on MX Linux running inside Virtualbox. MX uses Fluxbox and XFCE4. Fluxbox is a nice GUI because you don't have to rely either on GTK+ or QT. It's built on top of libx11, written in C++ and libx11 is the only dependency I believe.

I love Plasma desktop's amazing integration of GTK apps into the desktop. There are settings to change only GTK theme built into the plasma settings and by default they use the Breeze default theme just like the QT apps

@@johanliebert9662 Install the GTK theme of your choice Then go to system settings > Appearance > Application Style > Configure Gnome / GTK Application Style..then select the theme from the dropdown list and press apply

Guys, if qt5ct is not enough or doesnt want to work for some reason. Install kvantum manager, its the tool used by KDE, a bit more bloated, but basically guaranteed to work

We dont so bloat buddy ! Buy some Raybanz. Dark theme solved OK OK. A #5 shade in a facemask for doing oxy acet cutting will be less bloated. Dual Purpose ! Weed eater, disc grinder, sander, Dark Theme. Man I B good. ;-0

Does anyone know why a terminal would be acting up(displaying extra tab spaces on autocomplete, etc) for every zsh prompt that I’ve installed? I tried a custom one, spaceship, and starship but they all have the same issues. The strange thing is that as soon as I comment out the PS1 value it works perfectly. So basically it seems to be a formatting error where the prompt is trying to read some information that is unreadable but what are the odds of that happening to two different prompt theme managers(spaceship and starship) at the exact same time?

You need to not have a custom PS1 in your config. If it's there, comment it out as starship has it's own PS1 settings.

@@DistroTube I do. I make sure to only have one PS1 or PROMPT source at a time. If I *echo $PS1 && echo $PROMPT* those are both always set to the same exact thing. However, I ran with your comment and found out that if I unset both PS1 and PROMPT before then manually establishing *PS1=‘>’* , for example, then my prompt works perfectly. It’s still off when I throw in color formatting and stuff but at least now I can set my own plain white PS1 with no issues.

@@DistroTube Scratch that. Something is wrong with the underlying system. PROMPT is completely unset and doesn’t echo anything while PS1 is unset before then being reset. I’ve actually commented out everything else in the .zshrc so as to limit variables and it still acts up. I think I’m just going to have to live with this or go back to a desktop environment and do some investigating there. I’ve already tried reinstalling zsh.

UPDATE: just in case anyone else with this problem comes by. The issue was those font awesome images such as the git symbol or other hieroglyphs that you wouldn’t be able to type manually. My terminal emulator handles them just fine but for some reason the zsh prompt didn’t like them. I simply removed them from the spaceship prompt and now everything is right in my life.

@DistroTube I have been using Window Managers for sometime now (Thanks to you and OTB) and you just fixed my issues with a few of my apps that I use and it never dawned on me that they were QT Apps... I'm so dense at times... Lol I have Lxappearance installed per you and OTB for some time now but that blinding White of the others was getting to me... :-) I also had to add this to my .profile and my .xprofile to get rid of a error the qt5ct was giving me that said "bla bla was not set" ! Add this: export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME="qt5ct"... Then Logged out and back in then the QT apps had the dark theme applied... :-D The Manjaro link I used: wiki.manjaro.org/index.php/Set_all_Qt_app%27s_to_use_GTK%2B_font_%26_theme_settings... Not to be an asshole, but RTFM. wiki.archlinux.org/title/PulseAudio - Assuming you're using pulse, you have this lovely page, various applications like pavucontrol and pactl at your disposal. wiki.archlinux.org/title/Backlight - I use redshift as a blue light filter and it just so happens to allow me to adjust brightness as well. However, I'm sure there are many other ways to do so. wiki.archlinux.org/title/bluetooth - Admittedly, bluetoothctl was a pain in the ass for me when I first started using bluetooth devices on Arch. After a little bit of frustration and configuration later, my bluetooth devices work great. wiki.archlinux.org/title/Fprint - I have 0 knowledge on anything remotely related to fingerprint scanning on Arch, but sift through some wiki pages, I'm sure you'll figure it out. You have many wiki/forum pages with the answers to _most_ of your problems at your fingertips. All you have to do is piece together newly acquired knowledge and create *your own* installation. That's the beauty in Arch and Linux after all.

Hey DT, there is a window manager written in rust called "penrose". It doesn't have a config file and because rust is a compiled language, you have to compile it so it is similar to dwm in that case but you don't change the source directly so there is no hassle of conflicting patches, you use the provided libraries(?) to write your own twm similar to you do in qtile and xmonad. Maybe you might be interested in an have a look. AFAIK it is pretty new and it might not be very stable though.

That all depends on the application you are using and the way the developer implemented it. Most applications no matter what you prefer to have either installed or an app image respect the gtk or qt theme if it’s a qt application.

What would you even need any of that shit for anyway? Just launch the programs with a program launcher.

So you want a panel with a traditional menu system? Try lxpanel. Desktop icons? That's a bit trickier. I know some file managers have the ability to manage desktop icons (nautilus, pcmanfm). But I haven't tried to make it work in a tiling window manager. Doesn't make sense anyway since you will never see the desktop unless you have nothing open.

@@6500s1 I mean with tiling window managers you don’t have those buttons. You don’t minimize really in tiling window managers. When you are done or want to open a new program usually switch to new workspace.

What ??? having to restart an app for theme change to kick in ? Now that's a blast from the past. Painful. Any modern system responds to a change theme signal, so apps change theme without restart instantly. I had forgotten what i's like living in stone ages with ancient window managers or is it an Xmonad special :D. No thanks, not any more. :)

I think that just has to do with the applications themself and not the environment you are in. Some applications don’t refresh when you change themes since they haven’t implemented the detection of it. I could be wrong but that is what I think.

@@warhawk_yt Not really. If an application is written in gtk or qt the theme change is build in automatically, you don't code in, it is in the toolkit. and Qt/Gtk were on display. The DE/toolkit then manages to make sure when a change theme signal is emitted, all apps hear it and react accordingly in real time. i.e. no restart required ! I am guessing it is the fault of the window manger at some level not emitting the change theme signal somehow to its children. I mean, if not configured correctly Qt themes may not change their theme in GNOME. Likewise KDE may not change gtk theme when the environment emits a change theme request. Xmonad fails on both fronts clearly. It doesn't even try because it knows, nada, zilch about gtk, themes or qt :)

@@warhawk_yt NP. Ok Qtile my bad that is, DT changes too often, I can't keep up :) Clearly it is equally primitive and looks it. We all love to poke fun (well I do) at DTs lust for primitive WMs and aversion to normal desktops .. for some reason. :D

@@afborro I personally love qtile. It’s my favorite window manager. It’s all personal preference though. To be honest in my opinion not that big of a deal usually when I change themes I don’t have any applications open anyway so doesn’t bother me much plus I rarely change themes.

I love using i3 and KDE apps... I set the global theme and accent colors in KDE and then I do => echo "XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP=KDE" | sudo tee -a /etc/environment
