You don't need a regulator for 1.5W panel. It doesn't have enough power to hurt the battery. On the contrary the added 100w regulator will consume all of the trickle charger power and defeat your setup
@vevenaneathna
@vevenaneathna 9 месяцев назад
ya, probably dont need a regulator for any lead based batteries. would need enough surplus energy to overcome the scaled resistance of the battery at higher voltages, plus they have a lot of thermal mass so not that big of an issue. lithium ion on the other hand usually has pretty low internal resistance in the sub 100mohm range per cell, i would expect that even a low power solar panel could damage them so its probably why the warning is on the package. like trying to overfill a truck tire with a small tire pump, probably wont happen, but you could easily destroy a much larger but thinner weather balloon with the same pump given enough time.

I’m pretty sure this will only work on a cigarette lighter socket that stays on when the engine isn’t running. If the socket turns off when you stop the engine (as is true in most modern cars), it is disconnected from the battery.
@mohammedalmatalqa7954
@mohammedalmatalqa7954 4 года назад
Yeah you totally right .. even modern car after leave it more than 5 hour it disconnected so its better to connect it to the battery directly

This will not help for most car .. maybe only new cars cuz once remove the car key it will cut the power thru battrey .. even modern car after leave it more than 5 hour it disconnected so its better to connect it to the battery directly

That’s correct. My VW Caddy still uses battery in the cigarette port when it’s off though.
@jasonspellich2440

Depends on the car. The "cigarette lighter" might turn off with the car but the additional power ports should stay active. For example in my Yukon the cigarette port turns off but the other 6 ports stay active.
@davoid7914
@davoid7914 3 года назад
You need to get your mechanic to make the cigarette lighter socket 'live' so the panel can charge when the ignition is off.

@tullgutten
@tullgutten 6 лет назад
If very sunny and not using car you could overcharge it and it might start burning or explode. And the solar panel itself without regulator or diode could draw power from the battery at night. Always use a solar charge controller! (Is MY opinion)
@tullgutten
@tullgutten 6 лет назад
If the car sits for several days of course, any overcharge is bad, 12 volt panels usually goes up over 17 volts
@alansach8437

Well, you are probably right. But if you are going to leave it for months (over the winter for example) the potential for overcharge is there. That can damage the battery. The instructions that come with the charger recommend a regulator, as mentioned in the video. For 20 bucks, better safe than sorry. Now, if you know for a fact that there is at least a 1.5w (or close) constant drain on your battery (such as an alarm system) then a regulator certainly would not be needed.

Just a bit of warning. Regulatora have info writen. Connect batery first than solar panel. You might have damaged the regulator.

Bought same solar charger in the UK rebranded Halfords and I've left my 1.4 Civic 7 months connected and started immediately. No regulator/controller used as it is mentioned on nu the box that this will stop charging once the battery will reach the max power.

I'm no electrician , but I'm thinking the internal circuitry wouldn't be able to handle the increase of voltage or amperage that would come with tying multiple units together ... Would also probably depend on how it's fuse protected .. if any ??

Your solar panel outputs 125mah, meaning any 12v battery 1.25 amp or larger does not need a charge controller
@Baerchenization
@Baerchenization 7 лет назад
Yeah, utter nonsense... it takes 238 years to charge a car battery with that solar panel - which is why the instructions that typically come with it say that it IS NOT a charger, but a charge maintainer... my panel outputs twice as much as his and it says it cannot charge a battery. Well, and it cannot.
@ARF.Racing

Nearly every bit of power if not all of it that he is producing from that small 1.5w panel is being spent running the charge controller and the 4 LEDS (2 always powered). Battery will most likely recieve so little or no power and he is right back to having no maintainer attached to the 12v battery in his vehicle, but is out the 40-50 dollars spent on equipment. lol

I am almost 100% certain that that solar panel doesn't put out 1.25 amps. Now 0.125 amp is more like it.

I also have a 1.5W Charger connected on my car in the garage, and getting sunlight through the window, so maybe just 6hrs of direct sunlight. Never needed a regulator and battery is fine for the last 5 yrs. On a small charger like this I don't think it can harm the battery. Unless you getting 24Hr sunlight, LOL

That HF solar panel has a blue LED that makes the panel useless in low level light. Cut one leg to it and you will unlock the full potential of that panel.

@doraexplora9046

Connect this solar panel straight to your battery through the firewall and grommet. No need for a charge controller as the wattage is way to low to over charge the battery. i wouldn't stick it to the windshield. I would simply put it on the dashboard, and let it maintain charge, and then disconnect it and put it away with your sun shade. seriously, how often are you going to use this thing? A normal start battery can last 1-2 weeks without being charged and still start your car. Maybe if you have a Super Capacitor for starting and regulation of the supply or some other non-std device, or you let your car sit for weeks at a time, that causes a drain, you don't really need these things.
@alansach8437

These are perfect for maintaining the start battery on an rv that is parked all winter. Not much use for anything else (maybe a lawn mower battery, again, sitting all winter).

lol ye i foolishly bought one of these years ago and iirc it kicked out 70 mah i then foolishly bought a 2.4 watt version from maplins and that kicked out about 120mah in full sunlight, even combining the + to the + and the - to the - (i'e joining them in parallel) didn't make much difference (probably about 189 mah ) dam i still feel ripped off :-( but panels where expensive (i didn't have the internet then) ii rc an 80watt was about £200 or 260.69 US Dollars saying that though maplins (a electronics store in the uk) still charges £324.99 or 423.61 US Dollar for 150W Solar Panel Kit, which makes me chuckle as i'm about to buy two 150 watt panels off of ebay for £259.98

You actually have to make modifications to the thing by adding a item which will lower voltage and increase amperage. Also would never full sun. If you modifiy it that way you can lower the voltage to around 12.7v and increase the amperage slightly and with full sun charge a phone. but only in full sun.
@michael102
@michael102 6 лет назад
You can charge your battery and then use a voltage reducer to reduce 12v to 5v. You can not directly charge your phone or electronics directly to a solar panel, as voltage and amperage fluctuates. You pretty much need 5v on your phone or it stops the phone from charging to keep your phone from frying.
