Power steering noise such as moaning or whining can be common and easily fixed for many Honda vehicles. For Honda vehicles, that are equipped with the power steering pump shown in the video, this noise is usually caused by old worn out O-rings that fit onto the suction and high pressure lines where they bolt up to the power steering pump.
Usually what happens is that these O-rings will allow air to be introduced into the power steering system and cause the power steering pump to cavitate. This is where the noise occurs.
"Burping the system": As mentioned in the video, once the power steering system has been filled you will need to start the engine and then turn the steering wheel to the left and right all the way from stop to stop. Shut the engine off. Check and adjust the fluid level as the level should have gone down. Repeat process until fluid is full and power steering system stops whining. Do not over fill the fluid reservoir. Fluid level should always be checked and adjusted when the engine is off. After the system has been filled to the correct level it may be necessary to continue turning the steering wheel from stop to stop several times to get all the air out.
If the system continues to whine after it is filled and the system has been bleed then the vehicle may be ingesting air into the system through another rout. Further repair will be needed.
This video is designed to help you to understand what may be the problem with your vehicle and also to help you to understand how to repair this problem.
Note: Please use care not to contaminate your drive belts with power steering fluid. If you do, it’s been my experience that quickly cleaning the belt with brake clean will help to prevent damage to the belt from oil contamination. However, it’s best to not even have to do that as brake clean is not great for the belt either but it will clean the belt.
The vehicle featured in the video is a 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring 3.5L
As promised the part #s for the o-rings are as follows
91370-sv4-000 and 91345-rda-a01
Both o-rings where purchased for just $6.52

My Honda Accord V6 developed the same noise symptom from the power steering pump all the sudden one cold morning. This turns out to be a common problem for Honda power steering pump that Honda puts out a TSB for it. The fix is simple to replace the worn O ring, particularly on the low pressure side that allows air to get into the power steering system. The high pressure side is not the problem because it does, there will be a leak. However, it is safe to change out both O rings before it leaks. The dealers even packaged the two O rings and sell them together. At any rate, if these O rings are not replaced, the power steering pump or even the steering rack will eventually fail because this is a closed hydraulic system, it does not like air just like the pool pump system and the pump will die without fluid. The power steering pump makes the whining noise because it is over-revved and you know what happens when an engine or any motor over-revved. It took me no more than 10 mins to do both O rings including clean up time. Make sure you purge the air from the power steering system after changing the O rings by turning the steering wheel lock to lock at least 3 times with the engine off to purge the air (also jacking up the front end to ease these turns). After that, refill the reservoir with new power steering fluid and start the car and turn it lock to lock once more with the engine running. The power steering pump is whisper quiet again after the fix. That's all folks!

GENIUS !!! Had the same problem on my odyssey and the mechanic made me change the entire power steering and the high pressure hose :( the repair cost me hundreds of Dollars only to get an aftermarket pump that may soon fail and cost me hundreds again. The dealership might have even charged me much more when the fix is so simple. wish I had seen your video before. Thanks for educating the public.

Actually, the dealership probably would have replaced the o-ring as they know about this problem. Many independent shops dont know about this so they recommend a pump. It's also possible that you had a bad pump still.

Thanks so much! I've had a whine in my 2004 Honda Stream since I bought it 6mnths ago. I thought it was transmission so had that flushed but still had the whine. It definitely changes with the steering - like gets worse on hard left or right turn. Your video is so helpful - I could maybe do it myself but I'm a 61 yr old lady now. Still, tomorrow I'll start by looking for the air bubbles so at least I can be certain about the problem b4 taking it to a mechanic. My sincere thanks & appreciation of your help.

Performed the O ring r&r on a 2003 Odyssey. The intake bolt was difficult, but once it was loose it came out with just one figure manipulated it. I hung a rag under the space like a net and used a magnet to capture the bolt. I pre placed the bolt in the hose end bolt hole to get it back in place. The video is an excellent diagnostic of the cavitation. After the O ring replacement - all was quiet and the power steering was "easy" again. Thank you. It was the first video I saw!!!

Thank you for sharing this great video. I have a 2007 Honda Odyssey with 240k miles and was experiencing the same exact issue. My mechanic said that I needed a new PS pump which would've cost close to $700.00 with parts and labor. I researched further and found this video, bought the two O rings from Honda for $2.49 and it solved the problem. Getting the bolt out of the lower intake hose was a little challenging but I would definitely recommend using the a stubby 10 mm wrench. You will notice that the new O ring for the lower hose is red and rounded as opposed to the old one which is black and more squared. That would lead me to believe that Honda made that adjustment for a reason so I would replace the lower before the upper to see if that works first. Also, definitely use a hose clamp to shut the flow of fluid and a rag to protect the belts from any excess fluid run off. They will squeak if any fluid leaks on to them. Again, thank you for sharing this video.

Great video! Thanks so much for making and sharing. Totally solved my problem. I didn't feel comfortable clamping my old hose, so I lost quite a bit of fluid. I would suggest a cardboard sheet underneath the engine. Other key helpful tips from this video were the use of stubby wrenches and also the fact that the lower o-ring might be stuck/hidden inside. That's where mine was. Thanks so much again!

I paid someone to replace the leaking top hose. Afterwards, it squealed like a banshee. They claimed it would just take time to bleed out the air. (B.S. - no change after a week) The dealer told me the only thing it could be is a bad pump. (Idiot) I used a turkey baster to remove the fluid from the reservoir. Hardly any spilled. I got the pump out. removed the bottom pipe and noticed there was no resistance. The new o-ring on top was very hard to pull off. This made me suspicious. I tested the spring of the o-ring. It broke into 3 pieces. I figured it was worth a shot, so I put on a new o-ring, put it all back together, and like magic, it works fine with no noise. I'm guessing when they replaced the top hose, even though they didn't touch the bottom hose, while the fluid was drained out, the o-ring dried out and became like glass. Thanks for your video. I may not have had the confidence to try putting everything back together without the new pump if I hadn't seen this video. Saved $130

Lately I am also having some issues with my power steering system. Our car is a Honda City 99 model. A week ago, after an hour drive, when I am about to park in a mall, I heard my pump made a great noise, and got a tough steering. It also made some groan noise, on the steering wheel while I maneuver in a parking lot. As I had parked, looked under the hood while the engine is running, the fluid in the reservoir is normal, not empty, and flowing. When I got home and observed the reservoir, I saw some bubbles in the fluid, with slow rate flow. I know for a fact that our car is already 20 years old. Recently, the rack and pinion assembly was installed with a brand new replacement, last year November 2018. Will replacing both o-rings resolves the pump noise and tough steering issues?

But only when the car is cold it turn easier, lighter, smoother. My pump doesn't have any leak, but it seem doesn't have enough pressure and the fluid becomes thinner when it gets hot so maybe that is affecting the flow rate if the pump is worn out ??

Changed my two PS o rings last night and it's still making the same whining noise. The typical cold start whine. Steering is rigid still. No Ps leaking, or no bubbles inside the resovoir. Any other ideas. I'm thinking now the culprit might be a bad bearing on the Idler tensioner pulley. I thought this was the fix. But the sound is very similar.

You could have a leak elsewhere. Check the whole power steering system for leaks. There are also other possible causes. But leaks usually cause this.

I know it doesn't sound like it makes sense but the high side o-ring can allow air into the system. Most mechanics that know about this problem replace them in pairs. I'm not saying that's your problem but if I were the one to fix it I'd start with replacing the o-ring on the high side line.

Air in the system probably won't cause the rough steering you are experiencing. Even with low fluid mine worked close to normal, but was noisy as hell. It's a much easier fix than changing the whole pump. I'd give it a shot first. I sucked out all the fluid with a turkey baster, then turned the engine for a second to relieve pressure and sucked out a little more. Very little ran out. Seconds after I put it back together, it stopped making any noise. Autozone wanted $25 for a whole set of rings. I bought a generic pack of 20 misc. for $3. One of them fit perfectly.

Yea, ideally you don’t want to get anything on the belt. But if you do, what do you do? Clean it off the best you can or replace it? Your not going to wipe all the power steering fluid off with a rag. Or do you replace the belt? I’m not saying it’s good to spray it with brake clean.
