If I seen big metal chunks on the drain plug magnet, I would be more than "slightly concerned" considering it's a FORD...😂

Very Important to change this fluid EVERY 30,000 miles or LESS! This unit was designed to fail after 30,000 when your power-train warranty is up. The PTU only holds about 8oz of fluid and it gets baked by the Catalytic converter.
@digdoug9678
@digdoug9678 5 лет назад
Designed to fail? That makes no credible sense whatsoever. Please provide any proof you have to support your statement. As a design engineer I make it a habit to sabotauge my own clients for the very logical conclusion that they will come back to me for additional paying work. Uh. No.

@@digdoug9678 mine failed right at 40,000 miles 2 months after the 5 yr power train warranty expired. $3,000 repair. do you need any further proof? if you are the engineer that designed the ptu in the 2016 explorer, you did a shit job! congrats!

I have a 2017 Explorer Sport and this process does not work. The upper "fill" plug is now a sensor with a heat shield and my PTU has a lower "drain" plug. I had to refill using the vent line. I believe this video only covers up to 2016 or Non Turbo Motors.

Kevin Coughlin my 2015 police interceptor only has a drain plug in the PTU also have to fill through the vent tube. What a pain in the a**

Good to know - thanks. I was told that a transmission flush also covers the transaxle flush on my 2017 ecoboost (they share the same fluid?).
@jo7hs2

Kevin Coughlin there are two different PTUs used on the 2011-2019 Explorer. The Police Interceptor Units, Sport, and Platinum Explorers use a water cooled PTU. It has a temperature sensor. The regular Explorer (base, XLT, Limited) unit is only air cooled and it does not have a sensor. The latter appears to be the unit in the video.

What kinda of fluid goes in the transfer case, for 2011 ford explorer. I've been told transmission fluid just not to sure?
@1AAuto
@1AAuto 4 года назад
+malik hills Thanks for checking us out! We would recommend checking either your owners manual or contacting a dealer with your vehicle information to determine what goes in the transfer case. Some take oils, some take transmission fluid and other have their own special fluid that goes in the transfer case.
@bluenadas

Ford specs a 75W-140 rear axle lube for the PTU (Power Takeoff Unit as Ford calls the transfer case). Just look for the Motorcraft version on Amazon if you prefer OEM or are topping off. You only need a single quart for the Explorer to remove and replace. Though I'd recommend a Red Line or Amsoil version if you want something with more give

Clear tubing should make it easier to see the flow of fluid....especially when using gravity to flow UP. 177 inch lbs......really the design team couldn’t make it 180 in lb. make it simple 15 Ft. Lbs...???

How come no fluid drained out when the plug was taken off
@arturorubio7106
@arturorubio7106 Год назад
Because it was only a fill plug. Not a drain plug. PTU's with the 3.5L non-turbo engine do not have drain plugs.Suck out the old fluid from the inside and pump new fluid in until it starts dripping out naturally from overfill. Wait for it to stop dripping and plug it up.
