How To Check HVAC Capacitor With Multimeter

How to check a capacitor in a HVAC condenser unit using a multimeter to see if it is weak or bad and needs to be replaced. Even though an air conditioner unit will likely still run with a dual capacitor that is out of range, but the longer it operates like that, the more it's lifespan will decrease. Of course how far out of range will make a big difference as well. A 40 MFD capacitor that is reading 30 MFD, will likely still work but the AC compressor will have a harder time starting up. Whereas a 40 MFD capacitor that is reading 20 MFD, may not start at all.

You saved me a lot of money already. First, it was my cap and so I replaced it myself. A month later, it was my fan motor, like today, I replaced it myself too. For quick calculation, if it is + or - 6%, just multiply the MFD by 1.06 or 0.94 and you'll get your MFD right away. Thanks you for helping me save some money.

Love your videos & keep up the good work! Here's a helpful tip with the calculator to save steps/time. Instead of putting in the extra numbers in parentheses , just type in 35+6% or 35-6% on the calculator to get the microfarad range. Makes life much easier! 😀

Long time follower. You are an outstanding teacher. I have a “seasoned” (assembly date 29Jan2008) Payne unit that stopped working. Armed with your education, I located the Dual Run Capacitor and replaced it with like replacement 60+ 5Mfd I had ordered long before as a contingency. This action restored unit. All is well. However, whilst replacing this Dual Capacitor I noted a “add-on” 10Mfd Capacitor off to the side. (It is attached to wires with a cable tie.). The 2 leads off this add-on go to HERM and Common on the proper Run/Start Capacitor. Which I believe puts it in parallel with the HERM Capacitor, thereby increasing plate area/capacitance. I since learned people will use this short cut when only 1 side of a Dual Capacitor is bad. The schematic on the unit does not indicate Mfd Rating of the Capacitors for the Fan and Compressor. I can only assume the Dual Run Capacitor I replaced based on what was already there, was of correct value or what manufacturer intended. Question: Do I remove the “extra” 10Mfd capacitor or leave it? A second question I have regards Filters for the HVAC. There are many out there claiming to allow air-flow, but what FPR or MERV value will insure adequate filtering for the HVAC and still not overtax/overwork my older system? Thanks. And again, I sincerely appreciate your outstanding instructional videos. Joseph

Thank you! I appreciate that you've been a long time follower and I like that you included all the details with your questions. 1. Many compressors will have a specs label on them which also lists the size capacitor that is needed for it. If you are able to get to it and it's not faded out, you can find out exactly what size capacitor you need. If you only need a 60, then I would take that extra capacitor out. Another option is to call an HVAC parts store, give them your model number, and ask which size capacitor is needed for your unit. They should be able to look that up for you. I do an example call in my video on how to order HVAC parts, if you need more on that. 2. For filters I recommend lower values. MERV 6 or MPR 300 for example. The premium filters don't filter much more yet they do restrict the airflow more. Hope that helps! Stay cool! Jay

I spent $50 on a clamping multimeter which I'll keep for next time and $12 on the capacitor that needed to be replaced and that wouldn't even have covered the callout for anyone else. Quick first note- i didn't have a multimeter with the uf setting, found that you can use ohms instead. From what I could tell, If your light and beep blink on then stay off, your capacitor is good. If the light and beep stay on and the reading doesn't 0, or if no beep or light at all, its a bad capacitor. Second note- Lifesaver! Detailed and easy to follow instructions make your vids the best. Its pretty cold in MI right now and my furnace stopped working. Blower wasn't working right. Used steps from another vid of yours to rule out the main board. Then this vid and found a dying capacitor. What I feared was going be a multi hundred dollar visit from the heating and cooling guy turned out to be a $6.25 trip to the hvac and plumbing store. Furnace back to work. Thanks from me and my now warming up family!
@GaryMarkowski
@GaryMarkowski 2 года назад
I suppose if there is no continuity between the leads of the capacitor, then testing ohms may work. However to properly test a capacitor you may use uf setting, with the capacitor removed. I also use a MESR-100 ESR Meter, which can kind-of test the capacitors without unsoldering them from a circuit board. However sometimes you still have to unsolder them to get the best reading. Anyway, testing for ohms will not properly test capacitors.

If you are a math nerd and lazy like me you can calculate it much easier like this : Cap with a 30 MFD with +/- 5% Upper range : 30 * 1.05 = 31.5 Lower range : 30 * 0.95 = 28.5 Cap with a 30 MFD with +/- 6% Upper range : 30 * 1.06 = 31.8 Lower range : 30 * 0.94 = 28.2 Thanks for your video.

My fan was reading at 4.8uF, but the HERM was reading out at 89nF. (this lead to a lot of headscratching as I was reading it at uF).

I was able to kick start it by manually spinning the fan with a stick. Videos said maybe a bad capacitor. Swapped it with a new one. But its still doing the same thing. I have to keep starting it with a stick once it tries to come back on after it cycles off. Any idea what else it could be. Don't want to keep going outside to start the fan. Thank you!!

I've done the bad cap dance a few times... life's too short for waiting/baking through a heat wave just to make an HVAC guy rich over some little nickel/dime cap. I now replace them every two years come hell or high water; _and_ keep a spare on hand at all times. I've even set up a repeating calendar event as a reminder. Obey all the safety rules... remove power, discharge the cap etc, and don't attempt unless you know what your doing. Cool videos, Thanks!

Another reason your multimeter can be erratic like what you were describing is because it's battery is weak. I just had the same thing happen to my fluke, and replaced the battery with a fresh 9v and the problem instantly cleared up. I measured the old voltage and it was only 6v! Just like capacitors, electronics that run off specific battery voltages will still work even though the battery is weak, but they won't work as well.

If two capacitors (i.e. 45 + 5 mfd) are priced the same, but one, say, is +/- 5% whereas the other is +/- 10%, which one would you buy? Which is more reliable? The one with closer tolerance(lower %)?

My dad just passed away due to COVID and he has tons of these leftover in the house. Are they useful? Can i sell them?

Sorry to hear about your dad passing away.. You could probably sell them on Ebay but they aren't very expensive. Plus you would need to check each one to make sure they are good still.

As far as I know, there is no shelf life/expiration date. 👍

Hi Jay. Thanks for the excellent video. I have a question for you. My ac condenser fan motor stop working 2 days ago. I went outside and I heard the buzzing noise. I spin the fan with a ruler and it didn't kick in. I didn't have a tester so I decided to order a new capacitor online. My specs are 45+5uf 370V. i order the exact same one from Genteq. I took a picture of the original one before installing the new one. one brown wire went to herm and the red went to C common. When I turn the power back on the fan started right away spinning for less than 10 seconds and then it would run again and then turn off again. Then the buzzing noise came back again and the fan would not work again with the new capacitor. What can be the problem? Did i get a new bad capacitor from amazon or could it be something else? Oh yes by the way i also went to home depot and purchased a new condensate pump thinking that could be the problem first because when i had go outside of my house and watch the drain line it was dry and not even humid or wet. So i thought the condensate pump was bad and i change it. Even thought he condenser fan is still not working i did see water come out of the drain line now that i installed the new condensate pump. Please help me. My house is hot and i don't have enough money right now to hire an ac company to come do repairs. What should i look for??
@chrissauter7501
@chrissauter7501 2 года назад
There should be minimum 3 wires on the capacitor 1 for fan (usually brown) attached to the one that says "fan", 1 to C coming from the contactor (usually red or yellow), and a 3rd for the compressor attached to one that says " herm" (usually blue or yellow) (hermetic compressor). SOME systems will require a 2nd wire to "C" coming from the compressor. Based what you typed sounds like you put the fan wire on the Compressor spades.

Excellent videos, I have a not loud humming on my furnace when it is turned off. When I tried to turn it on with my nest thermostat it just does not turn on and the nest screen says “in 1hr 20min will get to the desire temperature” but it nevers turns on. Another thing, I tried to replace the capacitor but the iinformation in the label where it says the capacity is erased, how can I figure it out the specs for that capacitor
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 8 месяцев назад
The hum might be the hum of the blower motor that is failing to start. Or the inducer motor. Is the furnace control board blinking any error codes?
@juanantoniohuerta9024
@juanantoniohuerta9024 8 месяцев назад
No all looks good the furnace board does not send any error codes, it has a steady green light. The weird thing is that I hear the humming even when the furnace is turned off through the nest thermostat

@@juanantoniohuerta9024 Hmmm.. Okay in that case I would try to determine how far in the sequence of operation does the furnace get? ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AQD_MedIklI.htmlsi=C0ezYYL-0mk2jSwn If nothing at all, then perhaps try bypassing the thermostat and see if it turns on: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bmZc76ufTNY.htmlsi=6mnMHHii16Pq9CFx

If the compressor part (HERM) is still good but the fan part is not, can I just connect the fan to a new single run capacitor for the fan? I know that I will need to connect the common of the new capacitor to the old one if there is only one common wire.

Great video thanks. QQ If one of the Com terminals in use has lots of corrosion, could one simply change to another. The readings are good on the alternative terminal. Or should I get rid of it?
@WordofAdviceTV

Oh for sure! All 4 of the tabs on the common section are connected so it doesn't matter which spade you use.

So if my 40/5 +-5% is reading 33.8 it's bad, would that cause the breaker to continuously trip?
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 2 месяца назад
Yes, a weak capacitor could cause the breaker to trip but there are plenty of other things that can cause it too. I would recommend checking out this video: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-G1EBHrOgs-Q.htmlsi=52Lp4aovbK2ffEhw

Upon getting ready for bed, a man looked out the window and saw 3 men stealing stuff out of his shed. He calls the police, but they said no units were in the area. He said OK and hung up the phone. He waited 30 seconds and called the police again and told them to disregard his earlier call because he shot them all. Within 5 minutes there's cruisers and cops everywhere. They catch all 3 robbers. I thought you shot them all, says the captain. I thought you had no one in the area, said the man

Can it be possible the capacitor measures alright but not actually working under load? My condenser unit recently needed a manual nudge for the fan to start spinning and it is not cooling at all so I suspected the capacitor wasn't working right. New capacitor was put it, a/c started working, but the old one still measures to the spec under multimeter, it looked undamaged too.

HELLO PLEASE ANSWER ASAP..I have 9 tines(prongs) on my new ac window capacitor..my old one was 250 volts, 55/15..i got the exact same specs with three terminals but i have 9 TINES(PRONGS) on my new capacitor and ONLY five on my OLD CAPACITOR..both are dual run...what do i do with the extra prongs that i wont be using? Do i have to cover or tape them ??? thank u
@WordofAdviceTV
@WordofAdviceTV 4 месяца назад
The tines are all separated into three sections right? FAN, C, and HERM. As long as the wires are in the right section, it does not matter which prong they go to. The unused tines are just left as is, no need to cover or tape them. More info here if needed: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9ZGfvC-PMWU.htmlsi=45sER-D_YJhbxe1K

Does the capacitance reading drop over time as the capacitor deteriorates? Could I check the capacitance on an annual basis and when it falls out of range just replace it before it fails? I would rather replace it before it fails and strains the motors, they got hot on last failure two years ago, I could smell the heat....

Can I use a higher voltage capacitor? Old one indicates 270VAC. These do not seem to be available.
