Rich DeMuro explains how to check to see if your Social Security Number was involved in the nearly 3 billion records leaked by hackers. Link to check: ktla.com/news/...
When the Social Security Administration began, the SSN cards were marked "For Social Security and Tax Purposes Only - Not for Identification." Our government failed to meet its promise to protect the numbers by allowing them to be used by private businesses everywhere.
Not really. I worked for Social Security for 28 years. We ALWAYS told people not to use their SS card unless job hunting. I, for one, never add my SSN on medical forms. It was the other organizations out there, banks, etc., that started using SSN’s for what it wasn’t intended. Of course, this started way before computers, when sharing data became too easy.
@@maggiegarber246 how do you possibly say "not really" then immediately say banks start using them for unintended purposes, thus negating your own remark.
Medicare had to. We got new cards several years ago with medicare numbers. Our hospital and dr. bill came with our ss number !!!!!!! These people are stupid!!1
@@lipozrljohnson7078 The companies that offer the service of protection are sources of centralized identity information and they themselves are often targets. That's what they meant.
"trusted and mandatory agencies" Not always true. Places like eBay & Paypal aren't mandatory, but they require your SSN and bank account information in order to use. People need to stop just handing out their info to companies for services they don't even need.
I stopped using Pinterest because they require your date of birth. Why would an online site need my date of birth? They give ridiculous reasons that don't matter. I'm not doing that.
Why should I pay federal and si taxes if the federal government hasn’t protected me. Why do I have to pay more money to protect myself against the failure of government??!!!
Owning nothing and renting instead is just how capitalism works. It's a better business model from the business's perspective, it's why you rent everything and why everything is a subscription.
Why bother with ANY of those measures? If any institution allows any account to be opened using just your name, DOB, address and SSN, then they are breaking the law now since it's PUBLIC KNOWLEDGE that those pieces of information are out there.
With a credit freeze you'd need to provide an additional PIN to open a line of credit at least. Not what happened here, but I personally don't provide my SSN to doctors' offices, it's not usually needed anymore apparently.
@@Natty183 The same can happen when you go to unlock it too. I've heard of people struggling for months while trying to finance a car or home after locking their credit.
I remrber when I just had a bank book...Every deposit was entered in that book via the bank teller. Then the book went into my pocket then I went home. No data was stolen then. I hate this new world we live in now.
You would pay monthly at the point of purchase, not the company headquarters. Also, you wouldn't have credit to begin with and would just have to pay upfront for your purchases. Credit is what keeps our wages down and the banks profits up.
I am astounded that, from time to time, these hackers are able to breach what are supposedly "secure" websites. It is really a slap on the faces of those responsible for the security of the breached sites.
Government websites haven't gotten updates since the internet was made public. Seriously! If they don't update their sites, you think they even bother with the servers that run them? Remember how the Unemployment website pretty much exploded during 2020? Government websites are not up to date.
If you're a place of business or a government entity that holds sensitive customer/citizen information, and that information is compromised, we should stop treating them as victims. I say at this point, with so much of this happening nearly every month it seems like, they should be CHARGED for negligence and incompetence for being unable to keep our information safe. We can't keep letting these incidents go, and these poeple just raise their hands in the air and say sorry, with some worthless 1 month code to some credit monitoring website, as if that's gonna help. They should DO THEIR PART to keep sensitive information safe.
@@eddylucas7150 They have ton of class actions. You have to prove you were personally harmed and even then once the settlement is distributed it's like 10 bucks these day. 10 years ago when you had to mail in your claim I got 90 bucks.
What’s the point of me trying to protect it and be preventive when it’s the government that fails to protect what’s ours like they’re suppose to. Who’s accountable?
I learned working for .gov. Its probably .gov that did it. The company that got “ hacked” sounds like a cia front. Theyre just getting ready for genocide. Its the list.

I got a letter recently from dod saying thank you for your service and where to go and a coupon for commissary. I've never served. What do I do? Do you think my identity was stolen by the pos illegals?
This is exactly why money and personal information should never be digital. You could all scream your heads off about "get with the modern times!"I say f@#$ your modern times because your modern times are f@#$ed!
the problem is with the a**hats with the information are exactly doing that - not getting with the modern times - would you trust a bank that used 1890's style locks?
We Are in Unchartered Financial Waters! every day we encounter challenges that have become the new standard. Although we previously perceived it as a crisis, we now acknowledge it as the new normal and must adapt accordingly. Given the current economic difficulties that the country is experiencing in 2024, how can we enhance our earnings during this period of adjustment? I cannot let my $680,000 savings vanish after putting in so much effort to accumulate them.
Keeping some gold is usually a wise decision. You would be better off keeping away from equities for a bit or, even better, seeking advice from an expert given the current market conditions and everything that is at risk with the current economy.
You have a very valid point, I started investing on my own and for a long time, the market was really ripping me off. I decided to hire a CFA, even though I was skeptical at first, and I beat the market by more than 9%. I thought it was a fluke until it happened two years in a row, and so I’ve been sticking to investing via an analyst
My CFA NICOLE ANASTASIA PLUMLEE a renowned figure in her line of work. I recommend researching her credentials further... She has many years of experience and is a valuable resource for anyone looking to navigate the financial market..
Thank you for saving me hours of back and forth investigation into the markets. I simply copied and pasted her full name into my browser, and her website came up first in search results. She looks flawless.
Lol the IRS and government already have your financial info. You allow them access to all of it every year. How do you think your taxes are figured and reported and confirmed every year? It never stops being funny how Americans are so paranoid about government conspiracies spying on us while simultaneously giving their private and metadata to foreign companies, foreign governments, international corporations, electronic device manufacturers, and various domestic government agencies almost every day of their life. Everytime you use a search engine, a social media site, RU-vid, Google, apple, Samsung, Sony etc., any subscription service, or government programs some of your data and private info is being collected somewhere by someone and eventually gets sold to think-tanks, governments, corporations, scientists, advertisers etc.
Because the globalists weren't ready then to integrate biometrics into society at large, it was primarily for government and private businesses. Now they are preparing to integrate biometrics into all of society and have to create the justification for it, hence all these data breaches and other identity related problems, such as voter fraud and illegal immigration.
We didn't have this issue before Barack Hussein Obama........ He and he alone did this....he went in and just told Zuckerburg and Google what he wanted...... Now, Barack Hussein Obama is on his 3rd term and has nearly succeeded in destroying the United States infrastructure.....which was his goal.....and mission.....
Did you ever give 'National Public Data' permission to obtain, store, and profit from your data? Odds are, you’ve never even heard of them. So who exactly gave them this permission?
We are always told what we have to do. What about these corporations and government entities. They're making problems for banks, financial institutions and us. The first 2 will go after the weakest link. Above all the SSA has an office of investigations. The OI works closely with federal, state, & local enforcement. All of them should be doing something about this immediately. This happened in April? and I just heard about it yesterday?
That's absolutely what their asking you to do. All of those sites require you to give them your accurate information before they can tell you if it's been stolen. Nonsense folks, just place holds on as many creditors as possible.

No sh**!!! Just received the letter today. How many times do I have to go through this? So sick of this! They need to make our SS number irrelevant to every dam thing in our life! Sure, if you want to create possobly the biggest government and economic crash in recorded history. Trillions in debt going up in smoke would be apocalyptic for the modern world.
Why is the US government not sounding the alarm? why is the government not creating a federal law against anyone asking for SS# when it is not official government business? In Texas supposedly it is against the law for a business to neglect protecting our personal information, so... whom do we start to sue for damages now and in the future? The sh*&^t has hit the fan now!
If we didn't have income tax, we wouldn't need SSNs. Besides eliminating SSNs, switching to a sales tax would also ensure that the rich can't escape paying their fair share when they buy their yachts and mansions.
I’ve thought a flat tax would work. A percentage and no deductions. If you make $1000 a year you pay “x” percentage amount and if you make a million or a billion you pay the same percentage. No difference. With a sales tax, wouldn’t businesses who are tax exempt not pay their share? The rich have too many ways of getting around stuff
@@ritadyer9295a flat tax amount across the board wouldn't work it would have to be income based. If you only earned $1000 would you like to be taxed for example 25% of your income? That would be $250 or 1/4 of your earnings. A rich person or corporation wouldn't feel that pain much. We already pay sales taxes and there are luxury taxes on high dollar items in addition to sales taxes.
@@ritadyer9295 Islam already has this with the jizya tax system. Everyone pays 2.5% of what money they own, regardless of who they are and how much they make.

Especially not today with over 8 billon people, 2/3rds of which use the internet and its data. How the hell is this NOT MAJOR NEWS?! This is 5 days old i found out about this and not a single news or media alert came on my feed, radio or television. WTF?!
Not really they just ask for name, birth year and the state you live in, and then you can cross check it with the list it automatically provides for everyone in the area with the same info that was compromised. If you don’t see your city and address your fine. I checked mine✌️
If we weren’t all identified by numbers and credit scores this wouldn’t be a problem. Back in the 70s when my dad was still in the military and stationed overseas, mail to us included my dad’s social security number on the address. I hate technology.

Yea let's put all sensitive personal information into the cloud, wcgw? 🤷♂️ I echo another commenter's point: start holding companies legally and financially responsible if they cannot safeguard improperly stored consumer data.
They need to introduce laws that requires these companies to regular be auited for compliance. These companies need to start being fined and sued to bankruptcy if a breach is caused by something that was completely preventable.
The words safe and internet do not go together. There’s no such thing. These hackers are incredibly powerful and very good at what they do. Especially the Russians. The only way to be completely safe is to not use it 💯

Rich i'm pretty sure not only are all of ours out in the open for anyone to see, but yours and the entire staff at KTLA 5 too, along with your family's. this should be far bigger news then it is.
There is absolutely no need to check to see if your Social Security number has been leaked. It has. Nothing new, here. Now just go do the things that you ought to do anyway.
Who allowed one company or organization to have all this information? According to the article I read, it affected USA, Canada and UK . The leak was discovered on July 27, 2024. Perhaps a hold should be on all new applications for credit 🤔 I agree this should not be the sole responsibility of consumer.
