How to check & measure your brake rotors / discs 

I love how this is silent and doesn't waste any time or grate on the nerves with talking. I find it really soothing, like the old school nature films. Pretty useful too, I think.

I'm usually disappointed by "silent" RU-vid videos, but this was very good.

If you zero out your slide caliper on the 2 coins before you place them on either side of the rotor, you will not need to subtract the thickness of the coins after you measure the caliper with the 2 coins.

If you don’t want to take apart your car to measure what discs you need go to your service manual and look for the PR codes! Helped me out a lot

I suggest using two washers instead of coins. Coins are not flat and it will result in a lot of variation and error. The third method is clever but of no value. Most rotors have approx .060 of material to work with and a tape measure will never see that. BTW, nice job on the video part.

What I think you missed is how one would roughly estimate if it can go until the next brake pads change.

The rotor should be checked for warpage with a runout dial indicator...warpage can be caused by overheating.

If you don't have a micrometer use another tool that you don't have. Brilliant!

Has anyone ever heard of warped discs causing the wheel on balance it speeds between 65 and 80 miles an hour? my old tires were fine no balancing problems on the highway at any speed two sets of brand new tires and vibration bouncing at 65 to 80 miles an hour. could it be a total coincidence that my brake rotors or one rotor ended up warped and now it’s causing a bouncing or a vibration but at the very specific speed’s? I can’t see that happening. why would I get a bouncing or a vibration at 65 to 80 miles an hour?

Is it necessary to replace rear rotors when replacing rear brake pads on a 2012 Honda with 32,000 miles???

You could also measure the thickness including the edge and then measure the side of the edges on each side and add them up

As the difference between new and minimum disks is only 2mm, measuring with a tape measure is extremely inaccurate.

I don't use micrometers. Brake rotors are cheap, I replace them every 70,000 miles along with new pads.

Most Rotors are roughly the same as most rotors, i'd say just measure with a tape measure and take them into your store and compare,

Good grief. Use the correct tool for the job. They do make calipers with different jaw shapes, and the most-common micrometers have c-shaped bodies. No need for adding extra bits. Just measure and go.
