Another of the new 'Basic Skills' family of short videos, Here I'm showing how to check the rear suspension bushes on a mono shock type rear suspension setup on a motorcycle.
This includes checks on the swing arm bushes and all of the lower rear shock linkage too. All of these bushes/bearings checked for condition, operation and play in an MoT or WoF inspection.
Its useful to know how to do these checks as part of the regular maintenance on your bike as leaving them for too long can cause damage to components and result in a much more costly repair. The handling of the bike is also effected too so its a good idea to check these so that you can schedule a repair when the bike isn't needed for a couple of days...
These two simple checks can highlight any developing problems so you can get them sorted well in advance of your next bike inspection. Soon there will be videos showing you how to remove the old, worn bearings and fit new ones...watch this space!
These 'Basic Skills' videos are NOT meant to be a decisive, all encompassing, training video on teaching you all the various aspects of professional skills, no, not in the slightest!
Its a short video showing the basics giving you a starting point on how its done, the tools you need and a few tips along the way...
Any questions then please leave them in the comments section below and I'll do my best to get back to you asap...

You, sir, are a seriously talented teacher. The way you frame the inquiry, then re-emphasise the main points; illustrate the 'what to look for' and the 'how to's'; the level of detail, and overall comms skills are exemplary. Best I've seen on YT by far!

Thank you, sir! Tommorow I'll do the crowbar exercise on my CBR. It has exactly the same problem when moving the swingarm up, so far haven't been able to locate it.

Well I mentioned your info to my shop teacher who owns his own bike shop. He said that a side to side movement of the rear tire won't show a bushing/bearing problem but would show a chain problem.

+Shaine MacDonald erm.....it shows wear in the rear swing arm bushes. Nothing to do with the chain.

Hmm I wonder why he said that then?? He seems to know his stuff!

+Shaine MacDonald maybe it's miscommunication? That he doesn't understand the check you are talking about. Maybe show him on your motorcycle what I do in the video.

Hi, i got query regarding the shock experienced on the body & footrest. Despite monoshock operating good, i still could feel the hard shock on the footrest even while hitting small pothole. Am riding moped bike (Honda RS150, which is street motorcycle popular in SEA)

Hi sir, may i ask what is the down side of not replacing the bushing set of mono shock. will it do more damage to the swing arm or would it cause motorcycle accidents ? Thank you sir

Does the rear shock hold up the whole rear swingarm and wheel? surely thats a lot to ask for a shock? if you remove the shock should the swingarm swing down?

I've too experiencing some play. And another thing is that i've also experiencing some sort of wobbling while riding too. Is the wobble because of this play? I've also needs to check my steering bearing;coneset bearings

Might be that, my steering bearings are fine and I get wobble. Had an advisory for rear suspension bush two years in a row

Great video, but... no offense intended, but 50 seconds for an intro is way too long...

+Jenny Tokumei Thanks Jenny for the feedback. Unfortunately I need a reasonably long intro for my students to 'settle' down in the lecture hall otherwise they often miss my discussion at the start of each vid. Maybe when I remake a new intro I'll shave a few seconds off. Sorry....just the way it is given what I do. Thanks for the feedback though & you aren't the first to mention this as an issue. Pleased you liked the video though. Cheers Andy

Andy Mechanic Ah, I didn't know this was for a class room. I was just thinking it's an intro that's longer than most television programs, and the video itself is a little longer than a 10th as long as most television programs. The classroom thing though, I can understand it. I thought it was aimed at the youtube audience, which is usually very impatient.

+Jenny Tokumei haha! All good. You can always fast forward my intro next time :-)
