How to check your tyre tread depth using a 20p coin.
A very easy was to check your tread depth using the band around a 20p coin.
Put the coin in your tread and you shouldn't be able to see any of the band on the lower part of the coin. If part of the band has been exposed you'll probably have to think about getting your tyre changed.
The band on the 20p is around 3 mm
Your tyre tread start its life at around 8mm.
The minimum legal tread depth you can go down to is 1.6 but don't let your tyre tread get to that point. Motoring groups advise you change your tyres when tread depth gets to around 2-3 mm.
The moment the band on a 20p is exposed is good time to get that tyre changed!
Remember to check all your tyres and check them across the top and all the way around at various point due to tyres having uneven tyre wear.
