Transform your golf chipping with Mark Crossfield's how to chip in golf basics. Chipping made super simple golf golfers who want to stop duffing chip shots and start getting up and down a lot more. The secret to better chipping is to use the golf club to help you interact with the ground and ball in a way that limits disastrous strikes and allows you to grow in confidence around the greens. Mark Crossfield has had his issue with his short game and golf chipping which have played out on his golf vlogs over the last few years. Mark has struggled with duffing chip shots, thinning and complete fats with his chipping game. Today he shares his chipping basics that have allowed him to actually start gaining strokes with his short shots and stifling his chip shots.
These golf chips shot tips and lessons have transformed Mark's play from around the greens and there is now reason they cant help beginner golfers with their chipping and experienced golfers alike. In the comments below let us know if these ideas help your short game.

I am pretty good chipper of the ball. I subscribe to Phil Mickleson school of thought ... ball is never in the middle of the stance ... its either by the back foot or front foot, weight front loaded, and then hinge & hold. I feel that produces way better results for me than the style of chipping you employ (and most of my friends do). I tend to blade or chunk the ball using the method you described. Given that I will get up and down 70-80% of the time, I feel Phil's method works best for me. PS: I am not left handed :)
@paulcox4804
@paulcox4804 3 года назад
www.pgatour.com/stats/stat.130.html 70-80% is pretty good going given Webb Simpson currently leads scrambling stats for pga tour at 69%. Appreciate they’ll have much harder course set up but I think you may be overestimating your success.
@yossoufzai
@yossoufzai 3 года назад
@@paulcox4804 That is a fair point. Both about the set-up and my own estimation of stats. I keep rather rudimentary stats. Fairway hit, GIR, Putts per hole and Up-Downs that do include bunkers. My up-and-down percentage is roughly in that range typically.
@yossoufzai
@yossoufzai 3 года назад
@@paulcox4804 actually you’re probably right. I just checked my GHIN. Here is the stat summary: Current HCP Index: 1.6 In last 12 months: 75% par or better. 23% Bogeys, and 2% Bogey+ Putts per round: 28 GIR: 43% Fairways Hit: 74% So if I try to correlate missed GIR (57%) to 25% bogey or higher score with # of putts, it doesn’t support my rudimentary stat of 70% or so up and down. The stat I’m truly don’t know how to correlate is putts per hole (1.5 approximately) in this equation of up and down as GHIN doesn’t track that.
@paulcox4804
@paulcox4804 3 года назад
Feel bad, stay confident that it’s 80%. Confidence is such a key element of this game.

@nathancarper8006
@nathancarper8006 3 года назад
My chipping has been very inconstant until this year, I used to try to punch the ball and dig behind because I didn't have good speed control so was fearful of sending the ball past the greens, but I would either fat it and the ball would only move a foot or I was still sending rolling across and over the green. My chipping now has been improving and I have been getting much more consistent with my shots within 25 yards of the greens. I have been practicing within this distance quite a bit in the back yard but that's about all I can get for distance before hitting the course or range. I have been practicing my pacing and bouncing the club thanks to your and others videos. Thanks for all the great content!

Fantastic instruction. Chipping is the worst part of my game now and I work on it constantly. Terrible to lose confidence in what was once a strength. Chipping yips may be worse than the putting yips. One of the best tips I heard recently was from Nick Faldo and Dottie Pepper discussing Viktor Hovland’s chipping woes. They said it is very difficult to consistently chip well with a square club face, which is what I always did. Instead, allow the face to rotate open and feel as if the heel is leading the toe on the downswing. This, of course, introduces the bounce of the club more like Mark has instructed. Works great out of the bunker too.

It's astonishing how the many of the things they used to teach things in golf actually make it harder. For years I was the weight forward, ball back, forward shaft lean guy. I'm loving the fact that the new generation of teachers (like you Mark) are not simply swallowing the convention. A question if I may; would the same conventions/setups hold true for pitching? For shots 50 yards or less?

I have been struggling with my short game and one of the greenskeepers had shown me this technique last year but I never really got to grips with it. Now I have something to really help me improve. As I play at a links course the contact on the ball is so important of really tight lies. I should be playing again in about 8 weeks and will report back.

I have been working on my chipping technique for some time using the same methods you describe which have improved my results but I hit a wall and could not make the final step to get where I wanted to be. I have now invested in a set of Cleveland CBX2 wedge and these have been a real game changer, I would recommend these to all “mid-handicap” players, they almost feel like cheating!

I chip much better than other golfers my handicap. I feel like you need to be able to chip both ways depending on the shot and the lie. Chipping requires feel and creativity. If you pick just one approach, you might be limiting yourself. I’ll put the ball back and use more shaft lean on a ball I want to run out more. You have to focus on hitting the ball first so you don’t fat it, but with the ball back, that’s pretty easy. Another way to avoid digging in is to slightly rock back a hair as you contact the ball. That helps you to present less edge to the ground. To be a good chipper, you need to get good and hitting the same spot every time. Regardless of your technique. Clay from top speed golf teaches a drill where you put down a small pile of sand and see how many times you can hit just the top few grains until it’s all gone. Repeatability takes practice.

Nice vid. It is interesting and frustrating that for years I used the steep, high lofted technique to great effect, but as soon as I started trying to shallow (fix) my other golf shots (so I didn't have to chip so often) my chipping started to have higher variation. Matching up attack angle for the big and small shots resulted in a return to a tighter variation. I also like to simplify the type of shot by deciding the simplest landing area and then working out the amount of run out that is to decide the club to use.
