Regarding length and speed, there is an important point that is not often made and is therefore not understood by novices. That is, while a longer kayak has a higher top speed than a shorter kayak, this does not mean that a given person will go faster in the longer kayak. In fact, the reverse is often true. A beginner is very likely to be slower in the longer kayak than the shorter one simply because they do not posses the endurance power required to reach and maintain the longer kayaks potential top speed. This is because, there are 2 types of drag, skin drag and wave drag. Skin drag is a function of wetted area and speed while wave drag is a function of the boats length which determines the kayaks maximum speed potential. The longer boat will have a higher maximum speed potential but it will also have more surface area and therefore require more power at the same speeds and much more power to attain its higher maximum potential speed. This of course assumes fair comparisons are made where all other factors, beam, lines and weight are equal. If you do not posses or are not prepared to do the training required to gain the endurance strength and power required to attain the higher speed potential of the longer boat, then the shorter one is probably the best choice for you. Basically, the best choice depends on you the paddler because you are the engine.

Very well said! I'm new to kayak fishing at 61. An 11 footer sit on top seems to be the right one after all my research. I'm no distance paddler. I hope others will see your comment. I bought a budget kayak from a wholesale store. I know I need an upgrade... I like the 'open style' kayaks for bass fishing. Great comment Ken. 👍

Hey Ken: Good advice. Would-be buyers would be well informed watching this. FYI: I do all my paddling (kayak fishing) around Ottawa, in a Tarpon 100 I've owned for 10 years. (At $800, that's $2 a trip as I've made over 400 trips on it). Love it.

Wanted to try kayak fishing ( small waters) but wasn't sure I'd like it, so I bought the cheapest SOT and the cheap paddle that came with it. If I didn't really like fishing that way, I could sell a cheap kayak in a day vs an expensive one that I'd probably lose money on. Turns out that I like it but I rarely get to use it so 3 years later, it's still like new. I did upgrade the paddle. All good.

I always tell people to ask themselves the “where” (where will you be paddling), “why” (what is you goal, what do you want to get out of it) “how much” (how much are you willing/ have to spend) questions! Answering those three questions usually narrows down the choices greatly. 💪

I bought it. It handled well and looked extremely good. I have had it out on the lake twice since bringing it home and it did not disappoint. I hope to go out quite a few more times before the weather turns too unpleasant.

I own an Advanced Elements AirVolution. It is halfway between sit in and sit on. Although expensive, I had to modify the seat so it didn’t hurt my back. Otherwise, great product.

I have only ever used sit-on kayaks (4 or 5 times) but now fancy buying one. As a 62 old chap, maybe I am too old to learn to paddle a sit-in kayak. I don't even know whether I would be able to learn an Eskimo roll.

Unless you want to whitewater kayak, or sea kayak in rough conditions, I wouldn't worry about learning to roll a kayak. There are some good and stable 'day touring' sit-inside kayaks that you might want to give a whirl... something in the 12' - 13' range. They're nice and fast, but more stable than a real sea kayak. It's definitely worth trying one before you buy one though... sit-on-top still might be your best bet.

Im 63, and have been paddling a sit in kayak now, for about 2 years. I love the physicality of the thing, as i generally paddle some distance, spending approximately 3 hrs, 3 times a week, That being said, i thinking of taking on something more adventurous, however sticking to indoors. What would you suggest?

Delta has a series I like. 14’ or longer for the more adventurous options. Thermoformed. Lighter than most. Rigid. “Slippery” in the water. That one is beyond my budget, so I’m looking at the adventura 140 for the same concept. Under $1000 and all the key features. If you’re tall some mods for leg support may be warranted. It’s comfortable for 4-5 hours as is. I’ve borrowed one (planning on stealing it as soon as my buddy’s back is turned!) and really think it’s the right one for me. Saving my pennies

Welcome to the world of kayaking! You need to decide a few things. 1. Whether to get a Sit-On-Top kayak, or a Sit-Inside kayak. Within the next week I'll be releasing a video about that. Otherwise, you're (obviously) going to want to get a kayak that has enough room to carry your camp gear. You'll need to buy some dry bags for your camp gear regardless of what boat you get. Sit inside kayaks typically have more room for camping gear, because you can use the whole interior. Knowing what little that I know of your particular situation and the kayak options, I would suggest a sit-inside kayak that is wide and stable, and that has lots of room for your camping gear. Maybe a 10 - 11 foot kayak that is over 30" wide would be a good start.

Funny... someone else was asking me about the Stratos a few weeks ago. Popular boat! And for good reason. I think it's a great all-round kayak. I have the 12.5 as well. That being said... I haven't used it in a few years. It's not because I don't think it's great. It's simply because I own a ton of kayaks - each for specific types of paddling. For example, I have fishing kayaks for fishing. I have sea kayaks for touring, whitewater kayaks for whitewater... and so I don't have a real need for a kayak like the Stratos, which is really good for paddling in lots of conditions... but not quite as good in those conditions as a boat that is designed specifically for them. Don't know if that answered your question...

Is there a crossover that can bring maneuverability for a class 2 river, but be a good beginner racing yak for flat water racing? Or, will I need to look into 2?

The first boat that comes to mind is Dagger's Green Boat www.dagger.com/us/kayaks/green-boat It's a long but maneuverable whitewater kayak. While it's really fast for a whitewater boat, it's not fast compared to flatwater race boats... but not bad! The other option is to go with a 12-14 foot long touring kayak. These boats are faster on the flatwater, but less maneuverable for sure. Some do have enough rocker to make them fairly maneuverable though... depends on your paddling expertise, and comfort level. The Pungos have a great hull design for the river, I have no problems in my Pungo 125 on the Delaware River, also another choice is the Old Town Loon 126 slightly wider and sits a bit higher than the Pungo, the Old Town is a bit more susceptible to weathercocking. Don't think they would be any good for racing, maybe an Eddyline Sitka LT

I like to introduce it from your professional experience! Can I ask you a question? I know a brand-Bestway, It has an inflatable wavebreak Kayak, about US$ 200 in Costco. How about its material? Can protect it from the ground's small stones? Because I bought it but not use yet.

I'm not familiar with this kayak, but it's probably fair to say that at $200, it's probably a kayak that you'll have to be careful with. That doesn't mean it's not a perfectly adequate kayak for your needs, but I would only use it in calm water, and avoid doing things like dragging it on the ground.

I'm very interested in kayaking but I know nothing about it. What brand of kayak would you recommend? Based on the video I want a sit-inside, short type. Are those $200 cheapies at the sporting goods super store worth my while?

Good question. The bottom line is that you get what you pay for. If you're just 'testing the water' with kayaking, and you'll probably only paddle a couple of times a year, then the cheapies aren't a bad option. But the comfort and performance of kayaks goes up tremendously when you move to a higher quality kayak. Two of the most popular, high quality sit-inside rec kayaks, that you can't go wrong with, are the Old Town Loon, and the wilderness Systems Pungo. They've been best sellers for many years.

I like the looks of those longer high performance once but if I was honest with myself I just like to paddle out to middle and flop legs over side of boat and just catch sun and chill sure some days ya have to put more effort into it on windy days

eBay can be a good place to buy used ones. Another great place is a local outfitter that has rental fleets, or a retailer that has demos. That way you can try before you buy.

So i grabbed this old kayak off a guy from work for free. Its been sitting in his yard and he got tired of looking at it so he tried selling it. Nobody wanted to buy it so he told me he was just gonna throw it in the dumpster at work. I told him if its going in the dumpster at work ill take it off of him and see if i can use it. Its a decent sized kayak. Im about 5 foot 6 and this thing is maybe 2 or 3 feet taller than me standing up. But i weigh about 250 pounds and i am afraid that this thing is gonna sink if i try to go out on water with it. Last time i was in a kayak i was about 7 or 8. Its heavily faded by the sun too. Its pink and after power washing it some stickers came off revealing its true color was orange. Is this worth it? It looks like it has everything it should have. But i dont remember the brand of the kayak or its exact length or what type it was. It looks like its for fishing maybe? It has rubber elastics up front and behind where you sit. And its the kind you sit on top of and not inside of.

Thanks for mentioning inflatable kayaks. Most videos like this completely ignore inflatables because their store doesn't sell them.

Yup. Inflatables used to be the 'ugly duckling' of the kayak family, but that's no longer the case! They're great options. I'm actually heading out on the water this week to test (and do gear reviews for the channel) 3 inflatable kayaks that I've never tried before. Looking forward to it! Stay tuned. :)
