Calculating the power supply is not complicated - simple math.

Suppose you need to set 18 meters of tape in a rectangular niche ceiling of the room. LED strip is sold in a package, usually 5 meters. So you have to buy 20 meters.
Select LED strip is better on websites selling LED equipment.
On the site there is an opportunity with the help of filters to quickly find the necessary equipment and immediately know its price.
You have chosen a LED strip for 12V power supply, consuming 24W for 5 meters. The site shows the power consumption of the LED strip for the entire coil - 5 meters, and for one meter. Copy or write down all the parameters of the selected LED strip. You will need them for calculations.
The power on the site for one meter is 4.8 W. Multiply by the amount of tape you need, in our example this is 18.
As a result, we get 86.4 watts. Power consumption.
Power supplies for LED tape are recommended to be selected with a margin of 20%.
To ensure that the power supply is not heated and has served us for a long time, we calculate a stock of 20% to our calculations using the formula:
86.4 times 20 and divide by 100.
We get 17.28 watts. Is 20%
Now we add our stock of 20% to the power of the LED tape 17.28 + 86.4. As a result, it turns out that we need a power supply unit with a power of at least 104 watts.
However, the power supply with an accuracy of 1 Watt, you will not find, because the manufacturers produce them with certain values.
Now it remains to choose the power supply.

Now there is a choice between sealed and non-sealed power units. Sealed blocks are recommended not only in cases when moisture may get on them, but also when you plan to change the brightness or color of the LED strip, i.e. Use dimmers or controllers. In such systems, open power supplies can produce a quiet but unpleasant squeak.
In public places, this can be completely unnoticed, but where silence and peace, such as in bedrooms or children's rooms, are required, such a sound can be annoying.
Unlike open blocks, the internal space of hermetic power sources is completely filled with a compound, and therefore the extraneous sound during their operation is hardly audible even at a small distance.
- choose sealed power supplies in a metal casing, since sealed in a plastic casing are designed for a power of 100W or less.
- now we begin to search for a suitable power supply
- nearest to our calculated values, with rounding to the higher side - 120 W.
This is a large power supply unit with a length of almost 21 inches and a width of 6 cm, its height is almost 3 cm. It must be taken into account that for normal operation and natural ventilation of the power supply it is necessary to provide him with a free space of at least 20 cm.
If you do not fit such dimensions of the power supply, you can buy two power supplies of 60 watts. each. They are slightly smaller in size. In addition, in this case, you can purchase waterproof power supplies and in a plastic casing.
You can purchase 4 power supplies, which are even smaller in size. Two by 24 watts. And two to 36W., Connecting them to each section of the LED strip, respectively, to 4 meters and to 5 meters. Remember one more not unimportant fact - power units of low power allocate not so much heat, as powerful and not so demanding to a place of accommodation.

When installing power supplies, follow the manufacturer's recommendations:
- Do not install power supplies close to each other;
- Do not place the power supply on the LED strip or against it;
- Place the power supply as close as possible to the place where the LED strip is connected.
- in the case where the power supply can not be located at a short distance from the LED strip - use wires with the optimal cross section, taking into account the load power and the length of the wires.
