Ask This Old House general contractor Tom Silva explains how air compressors work.
SUBSCRIBE to This Old House: bit.ly/Subscrib...
Cost: $100 and up
Steps:
1. Tom shares a couple of tips for using and maintaining different air compressors. In general, he explains that proper usage of and proper maintenance of an air compressor will allow it work efficiently for a long period of time.
2. Before using any tool, check the recommended PSI label on the tool. Set the air compressor to that PSI using the output valve.
3. Change the air filter regularly, about once a month. If the air compressor has a belt or uses oil, be sure to keep an eye on their condition and maintain them as needed.
4. At the end of every day, drain the air compressor of water using the spout at the bottom. Water naturally forms from compressing the air and it can cause the bottom of the tank to rust if left undrained.
5. Check each tool you plan to use with the air compressor to determine what size compressor you need. Tools with a small scfm can work just fine with a small, lightweight compressor.
Resources:
Tom discusses a variety of different air compressors that can be used for air tools. In general, he recommends making sure that the air compressor has enough PSI to handle all the different tools you plan to use with it. He also underscores the importance of both maintaining the air filter regularly and draining the air compressor every day to keep it lasting for a long time.
All the air compressors and air tools Tom demonstrated in the segment, including the air sander, nail gun, and sprayer, can all be found at home centers.

I love my California Air Tools compressor. The little 6 gallon can keep up with anything I have & it's so quiet that you can have a conversation in a normal voice right next to it while it's running & not have to yell. =)

I went to the smallest vertical one I could find. Those horizontal ones are a pain to roll around because you can't tip them up to high before the tank drags on the ground.

@@jasenrock Nonsense. Hot water tanks are built to withstand high pressures. And if he left the overpressure release valve on the tank there's very little risk of tank failure.

What’s the danger of a rusty tank and how do you fix it?
@Marcel_Germann
@Marcel_Germann 5 лет назад
What could happen to a reservoir which holds pressure and its wall is weakened? In the worst case: Boom! Don't mess with repairs on the tank, exchange it. It's a matter of safety.
@eosjoe565
@eosjoe565 5 лет назад
A rusty tank is very dangerous as it can explode without warning. There really is no easy / safe way to repair a rusty tank on a home air compressor. It's not just the rust you see. If you SEE rust chances are there are more areas that have rusted but isn't visible yet. If your tank has gotten rusty it's probably time for a new air compressor. The best way to prevent rust in the tank is to drain the water out regularly.
@augustreil
@augustreil 5 лет назад
Amirhousein Hazratifar, Most will start with a small leak and not an explosion. I have seen most occur around the drain area.
@zack9912000
@zack9912000 5 лет назад
You have to either bleed the air out of the tank every time or use a timed Solenoid that pushes water out of the bottom of the tank.

by adding a second auxiliary tank to an air compressor will that increase or decrease performance like SCFM? thanks!
@luchvk
@luchvk 2 года назад
It would do neither. It would effectively only give you a bigger tank and that tank would take longer to fill. Also, it would make the compressor work harder. The "ON" time of the compressor would need to be managed to avoid damage. Though, the air in the tank(s) doesn't have a practical CFM limit. It's limit is the size of the opening it's able to pass through. So, it would work like a compressor with a higher CFM rating. It would work like that until the pressure in the tank(s) lower(s). (I know that your comment is two years old but maybe this is still useful info.)

To inflate a commercial tire for a semi truck around 105 psi how powerful or big the compressor has to be at minimum. I don't want to buy too much. Just for my personal use on my truck. Thanks

Most traditional air compressors are as loud as a lawnmower, and they didn't mention the dB's these things make? I'll ONLY buy low noise compressors. They should have shown a comparison between traditional vs. low noise.

This video didn't really do as the title suggests. No surprise, as that seems to be how internet providers like to get you to click on their videos. I used to watch the original "This Old House" with Bob Vila when it first aired...I think in the early 80s. Most of the videos/episodes back then, never really went into depth on any particular project. Nevertheless, it was the first of its time, and I rarely missed an episode.

I have a hardon for MaxTools high pressure systems. If you do alot of large nail nailgun work(4inch nails or bigger) get the Max HS130. It is the best big nail nailer on the market. You can argue otherwise but you are simply wrong. The benchmark for big framing nailers is the Bostich Big Berta. That big bitch weighs 25 lbs or more iirc. Hs130? 10lbs. You can't beat that. You just cant. The downsides of highpressure systems be what they may. The hs130 is god tier
