This is a great session, but maybe it would be helpful to have other people with you on this one to show exactly what a low arch and a high arch look like compared to the average or normal arch.

This information is really important, people that don't know the proper shoes for an activity will get affected in years, I think it's correct to call it a bad habit.

Agreed.. most kids these or even parents worry about the style. Is it nice?? how much is it? $45 (on sale) it must not be good. $260 for shoes thats insane but it must be the best shoe... wrong its something called, Marketing. as long as you feel comfortable. I always try a pair of shoes on and actually simulate the activity what I will be doing. such as basketball shoes id put them on and do some cuts and jumps. I may look funny but hey this is an investment might as well test it. not just walk up and down the store.

Exactly. I had some Nike shoes for running and it gave me Plantar Fascilitis (sp?). I still have issues till this day! Running Camp advisors told us Nike shoes were the worst for your feet and running. Wish I knew this before!
@user-hs2hd7wp9g
@user-hs2hd7wp9g 2 года назад
Nike isn't the worst, they fit some people but they can't fit everyone. You can say that with any brand, I've been a loyal Saucony customer because I don't experience issues with them but recommending them to everybody would be naive at best.

My foot is basically the same as the smaller doctors except in a size 12. The first doctor has a very medium arch like I do, but medium is not the average. From my time, playing soccer and running track and just being around teammates and friends, it seems like most people are on the flatter side.. with some having a mid range arch and few ha I a high arch. People with high arches tend to be more athletic in terms of explosive power like sprinting and stuff like that and flat-footed people tend to be better at walking for long periods of time. In the mid range, people tend to be kind of good at everything. But not the best at anything.

What an excellent video - just found your web site, and am very impressed. Have kept a running diary since 1994 and have just gone past 25000 miles this week (40000km). I have never had a running injury, which I put down to always running in decent shoes. Tend to buy same model each time. About 5 years ago I made a determined effort to change my running style from heel to forefoot running. Agree about the sore calf muscles initially, but my shoes last almost twice as long. They used to wear out fairly quickly on the heel - I even used to buy tubes of shoe goo to build up the worn heels. With forefoot running the heels dont wear at all and there is a gradual and slow wear on the forefoot part of the shoe.

I watched a RU-vid video also about shoes and specifically women’s shoes. The presenter demonstrated that shoes with a pointed toe, didn’t even have to be very pointed, had the effect of pushing the great toe over crowding the other toes. That also had the effect of removing the stability given by the structure of inner side of the foot as the toe was no longer in its natural position, leading to pronation and knee problems. It was like a light clicked on! Yes!

I have found barefoot running shoes to be immensely helpful for knee pain, because of the gait adjustment and forefoot running style. It's not for everyone, but if transitioned into slowly, barefoot/minimal shoes I have found to be wonderful. It's hard going back to chunky running shoes.

Same! They don't need to be literally "minimalist", just zero drop. I started running in Altras (mainly for the toe splay), and actually they made heel striking hard. Transitioned to forefoot and it was like rediscovering running again.

I just started running long distance and thought I was an underpronator, but it seems that my left foot pronates much more than my right. Is this possible that the two sides don't match in biomechanics? If so, hypothetically what would you recommend? Neutral shoes with arch support insoles or just get stability shoes? or arch exercises? Thank you for your help.

Might you consider a video discussing the "pros & cons" to various wear pattern? I am starting to run and after about 6 months notice that the inside of one shoe, at the back of the heel, the shoe lining is starting to wear through the back of the shoe. Is the shoe too small? The other side is not showing this wear. Keep up the great work, you are the greatest, in my opinion. ;)

I have crazy high arches, and I love max cushion shoes even for fast days. It might be because of you what you said in the video. I also notice in the running world, there's generally some shoes everyone loves for daily training across the board. Hoka Clifton 6 and 7, Nike React Infinity Run Flyknit, and New Balance Rebel just to name a few. Everything is going to higher stack height, more cushion, but lighter shoes. I guess the infamous Nike Next% and Alphafly marathon shoes are the perfect example.

I do too, and I switched from a Nike Revolution to the React and the reason I liked the switch was because it feels more flexible. I wasn't ready for minimalist shoes, but I wanted something that would allow my foot to do its natural thing, and the Revolutions felt too stiff. Also, the Reacts are are really great for getting used to running more on the front and mid-foot because of the angle on the sole. It's been helping me run and power walk with better form. When I'm walking only or for casual walking, I use the other ones. I also started wearing toed socks with a snug fit and it's made a great difference.

Just got into a pair of New Balance 1540 V3s... While I now look like my Dad, they are definitely the right shoes for my foot shape and hip and ankle issues, and i now understand why they are rhe choice if snior citizens. Sizing down and going up to a wide width has been the game changer. I'm a very tall guy and my feet are very short and very wide which is strange. In a standard Nike i wear a 12 and in a wide New Balance im a 10.5. I'm done with the regular shoe store and will only be shopping wide from now on. I dont run, i have had several severe ankle sprains and have found out it mostly happens with shoes that have flared and thick chunky rubber on the heals. In The thinner more flexible soled shoes i am able to feel the divots or places on the ground i am stepping. In the chunky bottomed shoes i cant feel the ground, step in a divet, or crack in sidewalk and roll my ankles. However i have flat feet and plantar fasciitis and find the thinner shoes make my feet hurt. But id rather have sore feet than sprained ankles.

I have been told by a podiatrist I have high foot arches, but they have recommended me to use shoes with a rigid sole (like the Brooks one in your video). My own favourite shoes are the ON Cloud running shoes (which have quite flexible soles), but have added in “arch pillows”. So I am a little confused now. Could you advise? Thanks in advance.

Alta lone peaks 5’s are very popular for thru hikers ( less blisters, wide toe box, shaped like a foot , not pointed on the front ) last about 500 miles. Zero drop so they take some “ ball of the foot landing/ training “ . If you do a lot of running other shoes will be better, even though these are called trail runners. I found Nike and New Balance were the equivalent of eating fast food to your feet.

I gotta agree with him. One of the worst part about buying shoes is it there’s hundreds of options but there’s really only a handful anyone who actually is running on a regular basis should be seriously looking at and they are all in the 100-200 range. All the 85ish dollar shoes that most people will go for are trash for actual putting in miles. Two things you should never skimp on. Is your shoes and your bed. If there’s two things you’re going to splurge on and get the best that you can afford, it should be your high mileage shoes and your bed.
