Awesome video! It's been years since i have gone out in the ocean and i found some viking jigs big guys 17.5 oz and although they have swivels attached, i only have steel leader line bare. Both knots were perfect! I will bring in Haddock, cod, halibut, who knows lol. Tom in Maine.

Thanks a million for watching leaving some great feedback. I truly am sincerely appreciate it and your support for the channel. I really enjoy sharing knowledge and what has worked and what hasn't worked for me. Fishing should be fun for everyone. Not this big world of secrets where no one wants anyone to know how they got done what they did. It should be about family friends fun and ultimately being able to provide food while having a great time. That's why I try to keep it as simple as I can down to earth and at the same time keep some sort of budget-friendly aspect in mind. Thanks again. Tight lines & take care ;)

Really great way of expressing your knowledge and sharing your own ideas. I will keep in mind of the Alberto knot in threading my future leader line to main line😅. I really hope to save up in buying my own set up or just you know have someone willing go give something haha. By the way very nice video, hoping to learn more from your videos!

Hi Heath, Great advice. I like the Alberto knot for braid to mono leader and the double palomar knot is a great idea. I tend to go a little too heavy on my leader. I'm in New Jersey for a few more days. I went fishing with my friend yesterday. We caught a bunch of small sea bass, sea robins, sand sharks and flounder. They were all small but fun to catch. Talk to you on Sunday. Say "Hi" to Avi, Bijoux and Bella. Take care and have fun, Mickey
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Hi Mickey thanks for watching. The heavier leader is probably a wiser choice. It's funny you say that cuz I tend to think I go a little bit too light. I find myself in a pickle sometimes being outclassed by the fish that we get hooked on to. But that makes it more sporty more fun and more of an accomplishment that's unsurpassed if we get the fish to the boat and get to bring him home. Thanks for always taking out time from your life especially when you're on vacation to stop by and chat with me. I know you had a great trip and caught some fish and had a great time. All the kids say hi. Hope all is well with you and the family. Have a safe trip back. Take care :)

Very good explanations, and great knots! Any applications when your leader lbs is larger than your main line? Thanks, and keep up good work!
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Typically my leader is a heavier weight pound test than my main line so any of the applications I showed are what you were asking about. They also work vice versa if your leader is a smaller diameter than your main line which I rarely ever do. Thanks again for your supportive channel I truly sincerely appreciate it. Hope this helps. Hi Alex thanks for watching leaving some great feedback. My entirely encouraging if I always try to keep my leader in gear as light as possible. For I fish sometimes I'm out classed by the fish that we get into but that's the calculated risk I'm always taking. Makes it more sporty and more fun at the same time. And if you land the fish the sense of accomplishment is unsurpassed. Thanks again for always stopping by taking out time from your life to chat with me. Hope all is going well at college. Great video and great tutorial on the knots. Just a question on the thickness of the leader. I have a braided 20lb/.009 line (0.23mm), how thick would you choose your leader line? thanks!
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
With 20 lb braid you are good with 20 through 40 lb test leader of either fluorocarbon or mono.

Liking and commenting to support the channel but I've already been through this dilemma with the end result a bunch of rolls of expensive fancy fluorocarbon leader material gathering dust underneath my go to leader material of IGFA grade monofilament in 20, 30, 50 & 100 pound weights. But yeahhh I'll probably watch this episode anyway LoL
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Thanks a million for watching you're always being here. You gave me a good laugh on this one. Funny thing is is I have that same stack of leader material to inside a cabinet. But as time has gone on I've figured out how to dwindle it down to a few small rolls that I always use that I keep in my tackle box. It's pretty much literally just 20 lb fluorocarbon and 40 and 60 lb monofilament. then I have a hundred 50 lb leader material for my deep dropping and big rigs for those big pelagics. Thanks again for stopping by to chat with me and always keeping it interesting. I sincerely couldn't do this without your help. Hope all is well with you and your family. Thanks again for everything. Thank you for this video! I have a question: what’s the difference between normal fluorocarbon and the “Fluorocarbon Leader Material”???
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Thanks a million for watching and leaving some great feedback. There's really no difference between fluorocarbon and fluorocarbon leader or monofilament and monofilament leader until you get into the heavier thicker diameter lines. The composition in the manufacturing process that goes in and the heating and the stretching is a little bit different simply because these lines are made to handle bigger fish. The chemicals and materials that are used to make the product are the same it's the heating and stretching process and winding that makes the difference when forming the line. Lots of workers behind it is industry secrets but there is a difference when it comes to the heavier gauge line. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your supportive channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Always great to hear from you and have you stop by take time out of your life to chat with me. Tight lines & take care ;)

Great videos. I'm down in Puerto Rico West coast, there are a lot of fish with teeth down here. Can I attach a piece of wire leader to my jigs to avoid loosing so many jigs every time I go out on the reef?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. Yes of course you can put a trace wire leader on that jig. I'd use about 12 to 18 inches 40 lb wire leader. It'll troll the same and the wire will protect you from lost against the toothy fish. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. thank you I prefer the gt knot as long as i have a lighter on board
@pakde8002
@pakde8002 2 года назад
It all boils down to the knot you can tie with confidence on the water. For example tying a perfect FG knot at home is a lot easier than tying on an open boat in choppy water, gusts and light rain. A knot that requires a lot of technique or burning off the tag end in that situation would not be optimal, whereas a double uni or Albright knot is fairly simple even in adverse situations. Therefore, it's always a good idea to learn and master a number of knots.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Thanks a million for watching and always being here and taking out time to chat with me. You bring up a great point about what knot to use. And I've been in the situation of having to learn several knots and their uses and why we use them over the years. and what I have come to realize is that these connecting points all have a similar strength value the part where they're weakest is right on either side of the knot that you are tying. The most important elements are the fact that the knot is tied properly and that the lines are physically threaded together. Thanks again for all your support I truly couldn't do this without you and everything you've done for the channel. Hope all is well in your neck of the woods. Tight lines & take care ;)

Hi Heath, just wondering if you were using braid on a casting reel for popper or stick baits. Would you use a really long floro leader so the knot doesn’t go through the guides on the rod while casting out and slowing down the cast?
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
Yes I do have it set up like that on one of my spinners... it's 12 lb braid tied to 20 lb fluoro... I use a combo of a spider hitch loop tied to a no name knot. Here's a link to a video on how to do it... even though this video shows mono to fluorocarbon its the same thing for braid to fluorocarbon, casts perfect without getting hung up on the guides ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YD-3Cb8hP7c.html

Why do you utilize the Alberto as opposed to the FG knot? Just curious. I prefer the FG as it’s thinner and fits through the eyes better.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
FG is a solid knot... I use the Alberto preferably because I find it quicker... and on a rocky boat FG can be problematic.

Here is a question for you. I just purchased a Penn Carnage Conventional 6' 40-80lb Mono 65-100lb Braid. I have a Penn Fathom ll 2 speed 30 on it. I am putting 65 lb braid on it. I will be using it for several things like bottom fishing and hope to keep the AJ's from dragging me down to the bottom, also will dead stick it free lining live bait for Kings and other uses. How would you set this up ? What size top shot would you use? Thanks for the help and love watching!!

If you don't plan in planer trolling with it. Id use about 40 - 50 of 40 mono or fluoro as a top shot. Tie you leader on with an alberto knot. If you plan on planer trolliing. I'd go with a 200 lb test braid bridle. then I'd crimp on 100 feet of 80 lb test leader material. Hope this helps

Is there any recommended lbs test ratio of braided main to leader line? Why not same strenght? 50 lbs main and 50 lbs leader? Thanks...
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Not really a recommended ratio. It's all really trial and error. Mostly comes down to personal preference and what you are comfortable with. I typically go with 30lb braid to 40lb mono... or 20lb braid to 20lb fluorocarbon.

Hi I am an absolute beginner to fishing I am using 10LB braided line for mainline what's the leader line can use or I can use braided
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
1o lb braid I'd use 12 or 15 lb fluorocarbon leader.... use at least 25 feet of leader for shock absorbing or you'll yank the hook out of the fishes' mouth
@arnestanneck6331
@arnestanneck6331 4 месяца назад
I assume that steel leader is highly visible. So if you have toothy fish just use thicker leader or is there any application for steel? Thanks.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 4 месяца назад
When you use braid you always need some sort of shock absorbency or you'll 1. Either not get the bite because the fish see the braid or 2. You'll yank the hook out of the fishes mouth. You need at least 50 to 75 feet of this shock absorbing leader... The if you want to use wire line at the end for the toothy fish that's where it would be applied.

If you troll a no 2 planar what test braid to spool in the reel
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Thanks a million for watching asking a great question. The size of your planer should not designate what pound test your main line is. The real that I used for planer trolling is spilled with 80 lb braid for instance. I wouldn't change that line just because I go to a smaller size planer. However if you have lighter gear in your going to consider using smaller planners you could more than likely use something like 40 or 50 lb braid and be just fine. Hope this helps. Thanks again for your support of the channel I truly and sincerely appreciate it. Tight lines & take care ;)

HERE'S MY QUESTION. IF YOURE GONNA USE SUCH A LONG LEADER OR EVEN ANY LEADER AT ALL WHY USE BRAID??? YOUR LINE IS ONLY STRONG AS YOUR LEADER.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing 2 года назад
Braid is highly visible. The leader adds the stealth factor while braid provides main line strength and increases spooling capacity
