I like the way you present your videos, no BS. Just getting started in saltwater fishing after 40 years of freshwater. I am a true rookie at this. So I am trying to figure out the best line to use for inshore redfish & trout. Currently my setup is 30 LB Power Pro Braid with a 40 LB Mono leader. Throwing a Unfair Lures Rip N Slash, and of course Shrimp on a 6/0 circle hook, Carolina rigged with a 1 ounce egg sinker. ANY ADVICE IS WELCOME.

My go-to line is 20-lb SpiderWire Ultracast Invisi-braid. It's the best combination of strength to long-distance castability. I can fling a 2 oz tin 100 yards with my 9 ft surf-spinning rod. Not so much with the 30-lb test. I use 30-lb test on my boat road where I can just drop my bait to the bottom and get it down there fast in 90 feet of water, with less drag than 40-, 50-, or 60-lb test.

Yup, pretty much spot on! I got 51 pound spiderwire dura 4 braid and that stuff is the s***. At only 0.25mm it is twice as thin as my 30 pound mono and still pretty unbreakable. 😃😏

I really dont like to use braid. For striped bass in our river we have lots of rocks and debris in the spring and it tends to get caught up. Love the vids bud!

50-65 lb braid backing for fishing southern california for yellowtail and other game fish because it lasts longer you can increase your line capacity and you can put heavy enough flourocarbon leader to suit any situation for the yellowtail and similar game fish

Good vid! I use 20lb-30lb braid for inshore, 30lb-40lb braid on surf and 65lb braid for live or cut bait in deeper waters for BIG game. I find that 30lb-40lb is more than enough, never lost any fish on those lines and you get more line in your reel, especially for surf fishing. Line capacity is priority for me. Brands: Sufix 832 (mostly) Power Pro slick Spiderwire Stealth - only because I couldn't find the Sufix 832 at the store at the time and it was on sale....hope it's good! Leader: I stick with mono for most everything and fluoro for inshore.

I’m not a super experienced fisherman yet and I really just fish freshwater in Tennessee but I keep 30lbs braid on my “big” reel with an ugly stick gx2. I can put a leader on it depending on what I’m doin. 20lbs mini for catfish and an stripper. Plus I could even put a 6lbs mono leader for an extra crappie rod

10lb PowerPro backed with some old 14lb Cajun red mono I had. On my catfish rigs I use 30lb Berkley Mono, and my Penn Pursuit 6000 I have 50lb Hercules braid though in testing it failed consistently at the knot at around 30lbs.

Oh yeah in the second gar I had was 40 lb monofilament whith red litter two 7 j hooks whith live croacker hey make sure ya drag is so u can barley pull it so u not snap whith big one barley getting the hang of it I step my game up and can help u by what I learned

10lbs PP on my 3000 FL and 20lbs PP on my 6000 Saragosa .. big fan of fishing light tackle and never had any issues with Striper or Blues in New England waters.. tight lines 👍🏼

Yea, i usually dont like using anything under 30 lb braid. I cast a lot.. i dont get many wind knots these days (knock on wood) but that super small line diameter kinda sketches me out

I'm particular to Spiderwire Blue Camo. I use 30lb for inshore and 50lb offshore with Florida Infinity Fluorocarbon leaders.

20 or 30lb braid with 8-10ft of 20lb fluro leader covers pretty much every inshore or surf situation. No need to get too complicated with this.

Fluro is a hyped up overpriced corporate scam. Mono beats it in performance and price so don't believe that invisible crap they sold you on. Independent abrasion and visibility testing has proven fluro was a marketing hype cash grab.

Power pro, spider wire I like 50 lb for black drum and sharks in cape may NJ and then for flounder I like 30 lb or 20 lb braid, then for bluefish and striper beach fishing I like 40 lb, so I use everything

#30 and #50 power pro, swear by it. I've been loading power pro on my reels for as long as I can remember. As for the cost being more than mono, I will argue it by number of times changing out mono vs having to re spool braid.

Bg 8000 on 65lb braid i got 600 yards but i do a lot of pier fishing so that's on my 10 foot rod so could still cast big baits I could trolly fish or even go for some sharks

Sold... It will be #50 braid on my vintage 1973 Abu Ambassadeur 6000C Black Model. Back story, I found this reel in my grandfather's barn and rebuilt it with all new ceramic bearings. Sweet, sweet reel...

Haven't fished in years, but after watching a bunch of his videos I dug out my father's 70's era Abu 5000 and 5500. The 5500 is still in pieces awaiting new bearings, the 5000 has been totally disassembled, cleaned, oiled and greased. I love the older Abu reels.

The problem with 20 to 50 pound braid is you cant cast as far from shore. I live in Hawaii and from shore we are casting any where from 10 to 20 pound braid. 15 works good for me. I can cast it over 100 yards out.

And I color Coordinate it by lb. So my 10lb braid I usually get blue multi color line. My 30lb is green And my 80lb is yellow. That way I know what I'm using on any particular rod combo.

Thanks for all the awesome vids Jack! I feel like I know you. I live in Ohio and my in-laws live in port Saint joe Florida and we only get down there once a year for vacation. We will be down there this May 3rd-18th. I just have a couple questions. I have a penn fierce 2 2,000 I THINK and I just bought a battle 2 4,000 that I haven't even spooled up yet and it's still in the box. I can only fish from the surf (no boat, kayak, or paddle board). What would be the best setups for these 2 reels? I'm primarily wanting some tips for lures and artificial while my big poles are sitting out there with cut bait etc. I have a couple spoons, rooster tails and I gotcha plug already.

Personally, I don't find it necessary to go any heavier than a 30 lb test braided line like ever. Because as long as you set your drag right your chances of breaking off even with just 30 lb braided line are next to none. Back when I used to visit my family on the West Coast I actually caught a 203-pound shark using only a 30 lb test braided line. The trick to doing this though is to set your drag on your reel to 50% of the weight of your main line. This way the fish can take out drag without breaking your line but you still have enough drag to reel in the fish. Anyway it's really just up to personal preference but this is just my preference but to each their own.

Amen 30 and 50 lbs power pro. Reds, Trout, black drum, sheepshead, flounder, tuna and black fin shark. I use 4000 and 5000 reels. My daiwa bg 5000 is the size of a lot of other brand's 6000 and 7000s where my Shimano stradic and Nasci 4000 are the size of 3000. My penn battle 2 is a 5000 cuz I like it, my only 3000 is a penn clash and that's my go to. Gulp, Down South and some hard plastic lures does the job. Fish fear me.

I use 10 lb. PP on my redfish/trout rods with 2500 reels because it casts far enough to reach a tailing red in a foot of water from a distance without spooking the school. My big snook rod with 4000 reel has 20 lb. just because it is thick enough to tie thicker leaders to.

I keep 20lb powerpro on my inshore lite rods that i cast soft plastics like gulp shrimp my bigger inshore rods 30lb powerpro for bottom fishing.. 6t lb power pro on my 6000 and bigger reels for them bigger fish off shore .. But ive caught 5 foot sharks with 20 lb mono surf fishing lol

I run 20 lb powerpro braid on both my abu garcia baitcasters, and have had nothing but problems. It digs into itself, stops mid cast, sometimes snaps my line. Fishing in Texas for drum, trout, etc. Inshore fish. Any suggestions

Right now 20 lb Power Pro on my Penn Fierce II 3000 and my Shimano Sienna 2500. I might go lighter, 15 or 10 lb braid on my 2500 and smaller spinnining reels. Baitcasting reels I use 30 lb Power Pro braid.

Well it really depends on what I am up to. If I am surf fishing I like 15 pound due to the casting and the fact that ya dont catch much that is that big off the beach. When I am grouper fishing off the sunshine fishing pier I am 80 pound with 200 pound leaders and the drag locked down and yes I have been hooked up with fish off that pier that the broke that. Been 2 years and I am still pissed about that. I am looking into a yak and am also thinking 30 and 50. Thanks for the validation

PowerPro 30lb for all my spinning except for a very small rig and it gets 20lb. Level wind gets PP 50lb, so we are on same page with braid. Kings, Reds, Trout, Spanish in the surf. Tight lines... Marsh

Totally agree. 30lb braid is on all my bass and smaller saltwater gear. And when i use braid on my bigger gear def go with 50 as well. Though another good line for offshore fishing is 20lb Berkley mono moss green color. Ive seen guys bring in 200lb sharks on it and its super inexpensive. Its also a great backing line if you do prefer braid.

12# kking braid for inshore/shore fishing, 30 jbraid for near jetty or pier, and 50# kraken (some korean brand) for offshore jigging or surf casting. i hate heavy braid for light lures, and more than 50# braid is just unnecessary since my reels cant stand nor output that much drag anyway.

It just depends on what your doing with it. If your casting a lot some are better than others. If not they are similar such as trolling with a conventional reel. You get what you pay for.

The biggest reel I use for beach and pier has been a Penn 6000. Caught a 7ft bull shark on it with 50lb pp braid. Usually I bring a 6000 and something smaller but nothing under 3000. For the smaller reel I'd follow his suggestion with the 30lb braid.

My question is what is a great fishing line will not break when I fish for shark similar size?
