What's the best Harley Davidson for your first Harley? A lot of people say the Sportster. I do agree but if your 400lbs that won't work. I think the truth is you gotta sit on that bike and feel it!!

My father was an owner and mechanic of a Harley Dealership in Canada! He was one of the best Haley mechanics in North America at the time. He was also Canadian Champ in Dirt Track racing , ride BSA and the XR750 and he loves the Sportster, he’s 5’6” and weighed 150lbs back in the day. You are right about getting the right size for your own body size.

So I’ve been riding since 1968 and it went like this; Yamaha 175 Enduro 350 Honda, 450 Honda, 500 Honda four-cylinder, Honda CB 650, Harley Sportster, Harley Superglide, and now at the ripe old age of 70 I’m on a highly modded Indian scout. Got rid of the oil injection factory system, and used to mix green label (forgot the brand) oil mixed into the gas in the tank.

I finally picked up my dream bike a few weeks ago, its the EXACT build I wanted. 2007 Softail Heritage with dual fishtails, ape hangers, bags, and every piece of chrome imaginable. Won't need to dump money on aesthetics, just maintenance. Took me 3 years to get there, started off on a Suzuki 650 for two years then got a 1200 Sportster for a year as my first Harley. That thing was beat the f up when I got it and traded it in for the Softail. I followed your advice without even knowing it, it did take me a week to get used to it but now im good. Great video for anyone considering a Harley.

Really enjoyed the video and I'm a prime candidate to comment. I just bought my first Harley yesterday after 50 years of riding Hondas. My last Honda was a 1996 Magna and I honestly loved the bike but it was having more and more problems. It left me stranded at a gas station Sunday morning and that was the last straw. I'd been thinking about finally getting a Harley for awhile. I'd even sat on a couple and immediately knew they weren't right for me. I'm 5-10 and around 145 lbs. and 76 years old, so I was looking for something smaller and lighter. I pulled up a 2013 Sportster XL1200 Custom at a dealership and it felt perfect. Not too big, not too heavy, great lines, a 4.5 gallon gas tank. The clutch and brake levers were perfect, the seat was even comfortable. My first real ride where I wasn't stuck in stop and go traffic was this morning and I thoroughly enjoyed it. No buyer's remorse for this guy. It will rattle your teeth sitting at a red light, but that smooths out and disappears when you get up a little speed. It's a great ride at 65 mph. The smaller size and weight make it nimble in the corners and the handling overall is beginner-easy. I think I got the right first Harley for my size and strength, which is not even close to what it was even 20 years ago, and I'm really comfortable with every aspect of this bike. Would definitely recommend the Sportster XL1200 for riders about my size and previous experience on metric cycles.

Great advice. I started on a Fat Boy because I was too short for the sportster and I liked the curves. Lowered it to help me park but I road it well. The only thing missing was music and cargo. So I moved to a lowered Street Glide and road those for +14 years. Circumstances being what they were, near the end, I had to part ways. In a better position, I wanted to get another Street Glide but, then (unrelated) I got hurt. During my recovery years later, I purchased and tried to get back on a Street Glide but it wasn't happening. I just couldn't hold it up anymore in my current condition. I was devastated. My desire and short sightedness led me to the wrong decision. Upon going to the dealership to try and figure our what to do, my current Tri Glide had just been off loaded from the truck and was still in the crate. It spoke to me, met all my requirements, allowed me to get back on the road and I fell in love with it. It's why I created just a few videos to share my experiences and hopefully help other disabled riders get back to riding. I will always have a desire and passion for 2 wheels but for now, I'm out there doing what I love.

I'd like to hear you talk about why people or certain MCs will put people down if they don't ride a Harley Davidson. I don't make a lot of money and I got a family to take care of, and I have to be careful about how I spend my money, I'm brand new to motorcycles and I bought an 82 Honda CB900C for $1200 which is a cruiser style bike with a 4 cylinder engine. I'm a big dude at 6'5 and 270 pounds and that Honda fits me perfectly and I love riding, but when I want to talk to people I work with that ride, they only want to jab at me because it's not a Harley and that sucks.

My first new H-D was a 2016 Slim S black. Was going to purchase a deluxe, but when I saw the Slim I was sold🖤 They say you don’t pick the bike the bike picks you! lol 8 years later still put big smile to my face every time I take her out!!

I'm in the UK, been on bikes as soon as I could reach the controls. I had a harley dyna very briefly, loved the looks but on uk roads it was a wrestling match the whole way. I couldn't understand the hype until I visited the USA, man you have different roads to us! I finally got it! Arrow straight roads and most turns being 90degree makes more sense. Now I'm on a honda nc750x and a benelli 750sei for special occasions

Started on an 07’ Suzuki boulevard c90 at 16 years old. At 20, gave the bike back to my dad and started riding an 06’ Kawasaki Vulcan 900. Just bought my first Harley at 29, it’s a 2023 heritage softail 114. Loved the torque of the boulevard, but I loved the lean angle of the Vulcan more. I could really throw that bike around. Only downfall to my heritage softail is the lower lean angle. In a way I think of it as a reason to smarten up a little, haha. Almost went with the low rider ST, but the heritage softail is my dream bike. Has been since I was 20 years old, my first trip to Sturgis bike week and test rode one.

I just started writing last year so I'm still on my first bike, which is a 2001 883 that I picked up for about 2 grand. However I've probably put another two grand into it rebuilding the whole bike with the exception of the engine internals. I went to Tyler bars replaced grips cables half of the wiring harnesses all the lighting rebuilt the carb and forks, pretty much everything, including repainting and resurfacing the wheels tanks fenders forks and tree. But now I'm looking for the next one when I get enough money, and I'm looking really hard at finding a good sport glide. I just wish they came with at least a 114

I have a 2018 Iron 1200 and a 2022 Heritage Classic. I'm 70 and have been riding for over 50 years. I traded in a 2017 Street Glide for my Heritage. My second bike was a brand new 1977 sportster right off the show room floor. I went through 3 starters in first year on this bike.

My firt bike was a ts100 enduro when i was 12. Currently riding a softail blackline. I like the stripped down, no fairings, no frills, chopper looking bike. Similar to a softail slim, just without fat tires.

My wife, who is 5'2 has a Softail Slim S with the 110 Twin Cam that was in the CVOs. She handles it like a champ. She rode an Indian Scout for a year and worked her way up. My first Harley was an old ElectraGlide classic. I went to a Road King after that. I have a 2003 100th anniversary Heritage Softtail. My main bike though is a 2022 Road Glide S. I'm on 5'9. It's not just about your size, i.e. height and weight. It's also about your skill and how much time you put in learning the craft. I've been riding for damn near 30 years. Started out on dirt bikes... have had various Hondas and Yamahas. You are right; you have to work your way in to a bigger bike. I wouldn't trade my Road Glide for anything.

I just got my first bike was going to get a sportster but I ended up getting a Honda shadow instead I was able to get a newer bike with less miles for the same price it’s important for your first bike to buy what you can afford in a couple years of hard work and lots of ridding I’ll get a nice Harley and travel the country but for right now I’m just stoked to have a bike I worked, saved and bought my bike cash and I’m proud of that to me right now doesn’t matter it’s a Honda and not a Harley Love your videos and your energy Sending love from AZ

My first HD (and second bike total) was an 883 Sportster. Great first bike as I was 5’9”, 155 at the time. Now I have a 2013 Electra Glide. I knew my next bike had to have cruise, a stereo and storage for stuff. Going to the grocery store, I can put quite a bit in my hard bags and trunk. I’d say any interstate/freeway driving you want a 1200cc engine or more. Same if you are going to be in an MC, whether 1%’er or a regular club.

My favorite subject! Advice I was given but didn’t listen to was buy a used metric if you’re learning. It’ll save a lot of money while you learn what’s right for you or if riding isn’t. I don’t know but doubt using a metric as a starter is an option in an outlaw club. And I think you’re the first person I’ve seen point out if you can afford it, you’ll save a lot buying the options you want rather than doing it later. My first was a new Honda shadow 650. 6 months later I ate the cost and bought a 1600 Kawasaki

I first saw the 883 iron. Blacked out. Looked small n wimpy. I got excited at first sight. First Harley. Bought it used, lookin so close to what i wanted. Got her home and started wrenchin. I tell ya, this has been such a fun project for me! Soooo many custom parts. In 2 months, that bike looks NOTHING like it did from the shop! Fork extensions, 10"bars, drag pipes, stage 1 intake, lowering kit, tank lift, coil relocation, bobber rear fender. All in my front yard. Just got it home from the shop with a 1200 bore kit, cams, tuner and performance clutch. Total spent including the original purchase of the bike, just over $10000. Worth every penny! Excellent video sose! #Ghostin on Maui 💪😈

Started riding at 9 yrs old on the little mini bikes , then a Suzuki Trail Hopper 50 cc , then Yamaha 80 cc . And from there 125's and 250's . My first road bike was a 1971 Triumph TR650 . Had two Suzuki GL 550's . And then a Honda Nighthawk 700S ,,, last bike for quite a while . Then I got a Honda Valkyrie Interstate and had it 4 yrs and now I have a 2012 Harley Davidson Road King with a 103 Twin Cam that I picked up in September of 2023 with 5300 miles on it . Couldn't be happier . I like the simplicity of the Road Kings and it feels great and handles good .

I was a sport bike rider for years. When I switched over, (best decision I’ve ever made) I purchased a 2008 Street Glide. Tricked it out with a 26” wheel and all the chrome I could put on it. I joined a MC and Started riding long distances with the club so I purchased a 2015 Road Glide. Built a bigger motor, added some 16” bars and started putting some miles on her!

My first bike was a Solex, (a bicycle that had a 49cc two stroke motor mounted to the triple tree that could be unhooked and placed on the front tire to start and motorized assist), fast forward ten years to 1978 when I bought my first Harley, a 1976 FLH. I still own that bagger. She doesn't have enough power to get out of her own way but nostalgia keeps her around. (That and understanding parents that let me park in their garage while I was off doing whatever I was doing for prolonged periods of time)

I'm 5'11", 215lbs. I thought I'd go fir a sportster fir my first bike this year. But my driver was selling his 84 softtail. It is in great shape so I grabbed it. At first the weight made me nervous, but I got used to it and love it. I feel I made a good choice. And for what I paid, when I want another one, I'll keep this and just add another more to my specific details.

My first Harley is my current bike. A 2022 Streetbob 114 w/stage two torque kit. Harley fuzed apes, screaming eagle exhaust and tuner, Viking leather bags, Lots of trim. I’m also 300lbs so I didn’t want to go sporty. I’m also experienced on dirt bikes and I had a gxr 1100 when I was in my 20s. The only thing I’m wanting (apart from a stage 4) is a fairing, considering a 1/4 fairing like the Memphis or a batwing.

First street bike I ever road was a barebones electraglide from the early ‘80’s. First bike I ever bought was a 84 Yamaha Maxim 400. Way too small but great first bike. Now, after a decades long break, I started again on a DR 650. But, being 290 and 6’2, way too small in the prairie winds. Now I ride a ‘99 Roadstar and a ‘09 Softail Custom. Love them both. Roadstar (same as Roadking) for long rides, softail for rip pin’ around town.

My first bike was an '05 Softail Standard that I converted into a trike on my own so I could get in the wind despite being born with one leg. The bike I ride now is a '97 California Motorcycle Company "Rocket" that I was able to use the axle and swingarm from the Softail to make a trike once again. I really enjoyed riding the Softail but I love the Rocket, it's a badass machine.

Future rider here, taking my MSF next month. I'm 5'10, 215 lbs, but I'm also a bodybuilder and much stronger than the average person my size. I know people say sportster for yer first bike a lot... but IDK I just really don't like the look of em. I sat on a few different bikes at the dealership and the fit/comfort on the Softail Standard felt perfect. Should I be concerned about the bike weight? I mean I can deadlift 275 and squat 325, not amazing numbers I know but still... figure I can squat half a harley I should be able to stand one up much easier?

Mate, i've got a question for you. I'm an Aussie soldier vet, I got pretty banged up over the decade I was in. Unfortunately, I'm basically disabled now, and I can't ride on 2 wheels. Would it be better to get a Harley trike and customise it from there, or should I get one built from scratch?
