How To Choose Your Next Grom Board 

Parent of three talented surfers. Biggest mistake looking back was starting one of the three on a 6' foamy. The oversized foamy allowed for sloppy pop up technique and foot positioning to become hard habits to move beyond. For the small kids the Beater twin fin and 54 Special were the ultimate starting point. I wish those boards were around for my oldest. Kids adapt and learn quickly. If they are athletic, have regular access to surf and want it they will adapt and learn to surf and progress quickly on a small board. The small board like a Beater will not manhandle the kid in the surf and from there they are pretty much ready for a hard board. There is no substitute for getting the kid in the water every chance possible and having them comfortable in proper fitting wetsuits for the conditions. Let the kid bring both the hard board and soft board at the same time and let them choose what to ride as they transition. Biggest key is giving the kids access to good boards which is not easy. Shops pretty much don't carry much of anything in mini-grom sizes on the rack. Custom orders take time and more than once I had multi-board custom orders take so long to come in that the boards were outgrown pretty much immediately. Ordering 1 to 2 inches above height seemed to be the sweet spot for regular boards. Sharpeye , Super (RIP) and Lost made some fantastic mini-grom boards for my kids and their friends. Lucky for parents who might be reading this now is board companies now offer many more options in mini-grom boards than were available even just five or six years ago thanks to a crop of kids who are now in their teens and early 20s and the parents, shops, sponsors and shapers who dialed in boards five foot and under in recent years. Super (RIP), Lost, Sharpeye, Roberts and Pyzel being the leaders in the development of fantastic mini-grom boards. The level of surfing in the mini-grom arena has exploded in the past 10 years in large part due to the improvements in boards for the mini-groms.
