Good video. You should do one where you clean one entire half of a cover in order to provide a side-by-side comparison. Also, someone needs to make a magic eraser Q-tip for fine detail cleaning.

My absolute favorite tool is a sharpenable eraser pencil. It really works wonders erasing dirt from small white areas like in between ad text and even the white lines in the bar code. Edit: I cleaned one of those Spaulding ads with make-up removal pads, Absorene pads and putty and a soft eraser pencil and had it looking like the day it was printed.

Your eraser tip allowed me to clean the white portion of Edge of the spider-verse #2 1st print... when selling it I mentioned how the dirt on the white was the only thing holding it back from being a 9.6 or 9.8... hopefully the buyer got a pleasant surprise when the book arrived with razor sharp corners and no dirt to be found! After a press to restore the new book flatness, I couldn't see anything that would stop a 9.8 grade, inside or out 🚀

Id be nervous with the magice eraser, I remember cleaning a wall so hard it removed the paint 😅 I think its a soft sandpaper thats removing the paper pulp too, that absorene is interesting. Also just using the cottonballs, Id always jump to erasing but makes a lot of crumbs. Thanks for the info, got some new things to try!

I'm gonna try my hand at cleaning a book or two. I want to get familiar with the process and I've seen a few videos (YT is great!) with somewhat similar information. This vid firms up a number of cleaning concepts for me as I've now seen them used a number of times. I'm a fanboy of the Marvel Silver age and I've got tons of books so, finding a good "project" book should be easy enough. Next up for me is buying a heat press. Best to all.

@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 2 года назад
I'm not a fiber expert, but I believe every thing that you can use when cleaning paper is essentially detrimental to it, if not used carefully. I would only be concern with a cotton ball if you applied too much pressure and it noticeably took off some of the gloss. I never put too much pressure down with any tool.

I assume there is no chance of the magic eraser taking off gloss from the factory then?
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 2 года назад
Can't tell if you're being tongue in cheek sarcastic, or if you're asking an honest question. Yes, magic erasers are harsh. That's why you have to be extremely careful when using them on comics. But that goes for anything you use when cleaning comics. You have to know how to use the tools appropriately. You need to gauge the right amount of pressure with the erase piece. To much pressure and aggressive scrubbing could not only take the gloss off, but can eat a hole in the paper.

Great question. You have to understand that most dirt and build up is collected on the covers, hence why they are focused on. Cleaning can be done to interior though. Similar tactics, but you have to be extra careful with newsprint paper.

How does this process fair with inside pages that aren't glossy? I have some gunk on the cover of a tmnt #4 that the cover is the same texture as inside pages. Like you mentioned it's like pieces of food or something. Not staining. Best I can relate is it looks like dried boogers on there lol
@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 3 года назад
haha the infamous dried boogers! Non gloss pages or the newspaper print are a different beast. You can apply a cotton ball the same way, and even the absorene, but I would be very careful (even MORE careful) with any type of eraser. I've only used a magic eraser on gloss, but I would assume tha would be safe as long as it is still white. But my main concern would be eraser use. And eraser can really eat up newspaper print.

@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 3 года назад
Ouch! So with ink, that's going to be tough, depending on what type of ink.. but ultimately, unless it was a grease pen, I don't have any tips for getting ink out. Crayon and some sort of alien texture might be able to be removed, if not in totality, at least partially. I would definitely still start with a basic cotton ball and then go to the Absorene. If there is no more texture, or for a crayon, it doesn't feel raised, I might then try the eraser, but I would be EXTREMELY careful not to rip it or take off the color.

@JernosComicsPopCulture
@JernosComicsPopCulture 3 года назад
If you use anything too rough or too harshly on a cover, yes, it can deteriorate the page or the gloss. Even a cotton ball. So you have to understand what type of pressure to apply. Absorene is probably the least aggressive as long as you roll it and don't use it like an eraser with upward strokes. No waxy film is left behind when you roll it. If you use it like an eraser, film can be left behind, but it is easily blown off or can be removed cleanly with a cotton ball.
