New gun owner here. Saw this vid and wasn't expecting much. Was dreaded that it was 30 mins and wondered, ok what do I have to lose. After this guy said to put on some plastic gloves and explained how you don't want that bad and toxic residue on your hands, I knew this guy was legit and kept watching the entire vid. Thanks a bunch man.

Guys I try to make an effort to respond to as many of you as possible, but sometimes it's hard with our extensive work load. We attempt to monitor comments and block people that say very hateful or disrespectful things. We can't always catch all of them. If someone is leaving a bad comment that offends you the best you can do is thumbs it down and eventually it just won't show up.

Fuddy Duddy Complete takedown of what? I mean which pistol? My Llama 22 is basically a ¾ scale 1911, so easy enough to match up. But both are very different from a Beretta 92 or Walther PP. The Ruger 22 (MK I, II, or III) would require it's own video. But it would be fun to watch a first timer fully strip, clean, and reassemble a Ruger. Just be sure to include the cussing right before they rage quit and decide to pay someone in a shop to do it.

Vacuous Truth American Gun Institute uses Simple Green and hot water. Google AGI on cleaning guns. Toss the Glock in let it soak for five minutes scrub with soft toothbrush. Take it out rinse with hot water. Squeaky clean. Dry with cloth and hair dryer. You can buy canned air and blast the inside if you like. .Glocks do not need a lot of oil. There are many good oils. Ballistol is one of my preferences.

Cole Hinshaw I own a Glock 22. The American Gun Institute cleans guns with Simple Green and hot water. It removes all old oils and grease. Squeaky clean. Google AGI on cleaning guns. I cut up Swiffer dry floor wipes to the size of a patch. They work great. One box lasts a very long time.make sure you get all the moisture out. Hair dryer works great after wiping the gun down with dry towel. Be careful of leaving lint behind.

I think these video's on cleaning and maintenance are a great idea. I have been using guns all my life and I think part of showing a new person how to use a gun safely is to show them how to clean and take care of the gun as well. It also has the advantage of showing the new person all the details of their gun in a friendly way.

Myth: WD40 is a lubricant. Fact: WD40 is a water remover or a Water Displacement agent. A lot of people use WD40 the wrong way. The Military developed WD40 to help to remove water and moisture from mechanical components mainly. The lubricating capability of it are minimal at best! It is great to use if you are cleaning your weapon after use in wet conditions or after dropping it in water. Afterwards you need to use an actual LUBRICANT.
@christopherconard2831
@christopherconard2831 7 лет назад
Trigger Happy Over time WD-40 will also leave a wax like residue. A retired gunsmith I knew swore he could have opened a separate business just undoing the damage done by people using WD-40.
@christopherconard2831

Sexual_Assault_Rifle No. It's a blend of lite mineral spirits (think kerosene), and lite oil similar to what you would find I 3-1 oil. With other inert ingredients. Also, despite the urban myth, it doesn't contain any fish oil.
@xurx2838
@xurx2838 7 лет назад
I thought you were making a joke with the fish oil quip, but then I thought I'll check Snopes. Still thought it was funny not knowing the urban myth angle. Snopes: As for the claim the “basic ingredient” in WD-40 is “fish oil,” it’s a common rumor and one that is easily propagated (because cans of WD-40 spray include no ingredients list), but a glance at the composition information included in the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for WD-40 aerosol indicates the product is primarily petroleum-based, with the main ingredient being “solvent naptha, petroleum, medium aliphatic” (also known as Stoddard Solvent)
@GrumpyGenXGramps
@GrumpyGenXGramps 7 лет назад
Sexual_Assault_Rifle it's solvent base. It's a great cleaning agent! It is used a lot here in Florida to clean dead Love Bugs off the hoods of cars. It's original use was for cleaning and water remover, in fact, the "WD" stands for Water Displacement.

For those of you laughing, I've seen it too many times. Many years ago, a neighbor had a surplus Makarov. After about a year he wanted to toss it because of feeding problems and misfires. I took it apart. I've removed a valve cover from an engine and found less gunk. He had cleaned the parts he could get to without disassembling it. I've wondered about reviews and comments where 50 people are happy with a particular gun, and 2 or 3 can't shut up about how bad theirs was.

Thanks for the video! It's a good review for those of us who owns a semi auto, wether newbie or an old pro like me. I like using a old nylon tooth brush with a solvent/oil soaked patch, wrapped around the bristlehead, to clean out the magazine well and inside the magazine. I also swap out the ammo out of the current magazine that I have in my semi auto and put that into a spare, empty magazine. And use that magazine in my semi auto. That way you don't possibly weaken your magazine spring(s).

At some point in disassembling it you're going to need a tool, maybe not in the typical take down, but there's definitely a point where you need a tool to go further. I'm curious where that point is, and how you put everything back together after you're done cleaning it.

Giovanni Di Marco you don't need a tool to disassemble an AR15 for cleaning. You need tools like dental pics and bolt face scraper for the actual cleaning but for taking it down not a single tool is needed. If you are building an AR from stripped of upper and lower yes obviously you need tool but again for disassembly for cleaning you need fingers.

WickedSensation Thank you. I'm still pretty new to AR's and waiting for my registration paperwork to clear on my first AR.

Great tips and tricks! I learned a couple of things for sure. It's interesting to hear different experienced shooters give their opinions on gun cleaning and maintenance - seems like I learn something different from every one of them. I'd love to see an advanced pistol cleaning video, please shoot one.

Thanks for this. I'll be looking for my first gun in the next couple of weeks (as soon as the county clerk mails my permit), and have been worrying about how to do this. I'll be taking training classes that I'm assuming will go over the more mundane aspects of gun ownership, but it always helps to know this stuff beforehand.

No matter how long you've been shooting, I bet you enjoy watching this stuff as much as you did when you learned how to do it.

One of the other things I would point out that you can tell if it's lubricated well enough if when you pull the slide back you can see a small amount of oil on the barrel but you don't want it completely overly saturated or like you said it will attract dust.

Kleen bore brass jags are amazing, they are almost good enough to use without a bore brush, but even so they are much better than standard patch loop jags.

Advanced cleaning for pistols would be awesome. Also, cleaning for AR15 and bolt action rifles. Thank you for all the content y'all put out!

I always use some bore cleaner and motor oil. But I only shoot about 300 rounds maximum a session. Tooth brush works well for getting in the tight spots. Jam a chunk of ass paper through the barrel with a bic pen after sitting with the bore cleaner for a few minutes. Never had any issues related to maintenance. Sigs get grease on the rails instead of oil.

Thanks for the video! I'm a new gun owner (Glock 22/.40 cal) and am NOT the sort of fella who reads "stereo instructions" very well.

Cleaning guns isn’t really that hard. Idk why some gun owners don’t clean. It’s therapeutic honestly. Thanks for posting.

I've never heard of any of the products you mentioned except break free powder blast. Powder blast is a must for striker channels since you don't want any oil in there. I am pretty happy with Mpro7 cleaner and either Mpro7 oil or Amsoil oil, but honestly any oil will do, whatever is on sale.

When I first started cleaning my guns I started using solvent on the entire thing. I learned real quick that any metal parts that aren't immediately hit with preservative will corrode. Happened to a pair of sights I had. Now I just CLP everything with elbow grease, and occasionally put Hoppes in the bore...lol.
