Thank you Locklee . You covered it completely. If I had seen you , this one week ago it would have saved two days fooling around and then the plumber for an hour and 850 dollars !
I used your video to fix my elderly neighbors clogged sewage line Thank you for putting this video out there it definitely saved my neighbors alot of money they didn't have
Good video. A couple extra tips. #1 If you rent a bigger machine, they are very heavy so get someone to help you load/unload it. #2 Unless you think you will be done very quickly, you risk damaging the threads where the pipe plug screws on from the abrasion which is caused by the rotating snake cable. This is more important with "plastic" piping.. To offer some protection you can screw a PVC adapter fitting, or better yet, a short steel pipe nipple into the cleanout before inserting the snake.
Great Video, Plumbers Quoted me from 200$ to 500$ for Sewage line Clean up. I rented the 100ft, 1/2" Drain Snake Machine from Home Depot for 100$ and took me 30 minutes to get the Sewage Open. I took the Machine back in less than four Hours of Rental Period. Got 30$ back. Like u said " It's your Crap Deal with it yourself".
i watched several of these type of videos this afternoon, trying to get my drain blockage diagnosed. Your video is really really comprehensive and focused, thanks a lot.
I have to say thanks! I rented what looks like the same piece of equipment from home depot ($60 Canadian for 4 hrs.) after watching your video and saved several hundred for an hour and a half's work.
What a great video, and a nice speaking voice. I may try this before I call a company to come out and fix my sewer problem. I have that drain behind my house. It cannot hurt to try it. thank you so much.
Great Video! I've been doing this job myself for a while, but you gave a number of great tips. They'll sure to make it easier and more efficient. Also, thanks for pointing out what responsible tool rental is about. I always clean the tools I rent, but it's clear when I rent one that not everybody does.
Thank you sir! From the start of the video, I gained valuable tips and insight from your video using an automatic drain clearing snake. I'm scheduled to rent one soon & just needed the basic information. I'd previously used the type with the drill attachment. Thanks again for this informative video!
This is a good tutorial! Lots of great tips in the comments section too. The first time I used one I left the rubber tube (for the foot pedal) too close to the large drum and it got caught and ripped off, haha. Luckily it's only a vacuum tube so it was easy to put it back in place.
6:18 somethin like that can happen. Be careful! Take your foot off the pedal. Dont panic. Somethin like that can happen. Just be careful!!! Lmfao this was hilarious AND informative all at the same time!!! Thanks man!!! Keep up the good work!
Thanks! Its a J20 though but close! Unfortunately the engine needs to be replaced. Body wise and frame though are in excellent shape for one of those. Thanks for watching and have a great day :)
great video. they also make a tree root killer. you just flush it down the toilet before you go to bed (so it can sit in the pipe all night long and not get washed clean to quickly) you do it every 6 months. its helped a ton on my dads rentals that have old clay tile sewer pipes.
Thanks for showing every weekend warrior how to do this. It only ensures work for guys like me who do this professionally. There's a reason why we charge good money to do it. 🤣🤣
Thank you. I should of rented, cost me $250 to have it professionally done, but I will rent next time. After seeing the plumber and you do it, it looks quite easy.
@@JJ-xo3er Its basically like using a drill bit. You start with a smaller bit (essentially drilling a pilot hole,) and work your way up. They are only $60 for a 100ft electric auger to rent for 4 hrs. Way cheaper than $250. I suggest using a root inhibiter like Roebic for maintenance. Only $20 a year.
I just paid $775 to have my drain to the street cleaned out, I really wish I'd found this video beforehand. After watching how easy/quick the actual job was, I'm definitely going to rent the tool and do it myself should this happen again.
Wow. Thats a bit high for the job in my experience. Ive found about 300 to be an average cost give or take for this job. Sorry that happened, but we gotta stay on the positive side of things, right? I mean I have shit backed up through my handicapped sister in laws roll-in shower in a brand new addition that we just put on for her to get her out of a nursing home...addition isnt even a whole year old yet...and roll-in shower means that backed up piss and shit just rolled right out of the shower and filled a couple inches high in the entire brand new bathroom and some even into the hallway!!😡 Yayyy sooo exciting.. Anyway, we are doing this job ourselves so we are grateful for the sharing of this video for sure. And as for you..well, I suppose at least you now have the info for if this ever happens to you again..lets hope it doesnt happen again, bit at least ya know now, eh? Take care y'all
Very good video, thank you as I have a better understanding of what is going on. Now to head to the store because my DIY water hose method from yesterday didn't fully clear my issue.
Cripes, I wish there was a place around me where I could rent one of those mini-router units you have... it would have made my sewer project much easier. Instead, I ended up renting an electric sewer router unit that weighed 100 lbs, 12 cable attachments that weighed 60 lbs apiece and enough power to dig a WWI trench system. It all worked out but I'll be looking for that neat little unit you have next time.
Speaking as a drain cleaner, not every home has a clean out. Sometimes you have to remove the toilet or cable from the roof. And yes this machine is to small.
Yes, that's what is in the Zep Root Killer. It's a little bit cheaper buying it in bulk on amazon, but you only need 2 lbs at at a time. Use every 6 months.
Thank you! Our laundry pipe is backing up into our basement (luckily we already have sump pumps down there) and we're going to try this before calling a plumber ! 👍
I just bought one of these and went to put the bulb cutter on and the cutter just kind of flops around. Should the cutter be loose like that or is it supposed to be stiff or rigid??
The kink in that cable is the reason not to use rental drain machines, usually the cables are very limber and it could loop up (tangle) inside the sewer line . Running the machine in reverse could result in the roots falling off the end of the cable. Running the machine in reverse will open windings and could snap the cable inside the sewer line and . In 20 plus years as a drain technician I've retrieved cables from various drain lines. MOST IMPORTANT COULD CAUSE SOME SERIOUS INJURIES.
Exactly very dangerous if it got kinked pull fingers right out of there socket seen an experienced plumber dislocate his thumb happened so fast machine has lots of torque be very careful that is all I am saying
Mine tangled so bad that the only way to untangle was to completely stretch out the cable, it was 75ft, I was under my house every time I got part of it untangled it would kink up somewhere else, so I had a brainstorm to just out stretch the whole cable, so if this ever happens to you , you know what to do.
don't use the foot pedal to rewind your chord.. pull it back by hand... the reverse is for when the cable gets stuck and winds around and back into machine... see how it wound up on him that's what it's for... and it's sort of dangerous my biggest idiot habit is to press down on the pedal instead of stepping off of it... so be mindful
Just finished reviewing Ridgid manuals and videos on using one of these and the reverse is not supposed to be used for rrewinding the cable...just sparingly/minimally, if the cable head/tool get stuck and can't spin. Says running in reverse can damage the cable. Thanks for a great video, sir!
Great video man ! "Is that nasty ? you re darn right its nasty! " :D in the UK we call shoddy workmen cowboys but you are a real life bona fide Cowboy plumber ! :D Thank you for the video , definitely helped me out. I have a similar problem that needs jetting every 6 months. I wish we had some of the kit you have in the US. I have been making a foaming solution with bicarbonate of soda, salt and vinegar but i need me one o' them machines, the plumbers here cost a fortune. Very well explained and as you said - the real solution is to dig it up but that is not always possible-keep up the great work :)
In high density urban areas, the way that gas lines re being run, old sewers lines are often penetrated. Snake a line without using an inspection camera and you may find yourself with broken a gas line, a possible explosion, and a very expensive 3rd party repair bill to dig up the street or parkway. In my area this has happened so often that plumbers are legally required to use video cameras and save recordings.
Thanks for the video! Once it's cleared, what about using Roebic's Foaming Root Killer once or twice a year? We're just trying to get on top of a main drain slow down that happened three years ago (not necessarily recommending this but was cleared by a contractor friend with sulfuric acid)...and is happening again. Not sure if it's roots or just 'normal' buildup. We're on city sewer and three products on the Roebic line were recommended in a DIY group.... Main Drain Cleaner, SGP (Soap Grease Paper dissolver) and Foaming Root Killer. Roebic has been helpful on the phone. Using the main drain cleaner didn't open the pipe. Roebic recommended using the SGP in the washing machine drain (another four days). If that didn't clear to then use the Foaming Root Killer SGP isn't available locally so we're ordering it. Roebic said to go ahead and use the root killer first since we have it. We're just trying to figure it all out. Also, how to keep things clear going forward. Really do appreciate videos like these!
I have actually tried most of those, unfortunately they didn't have enough umph. My problem at that time was way past that point. A few months ago I actually had to remove that shed and dig up the whole thing. Found the issue. A HUGE part of a tree root had finally crushed the pipe in one area. Got it fixed though. But as preventative maintenance I'm sure some of those products would work out great :) Thanks for watching!
Yeah got a nasty 4 inch clean out with water already pooled up . Will hopefully find the right auto feeder snake . What is the difference between auto fed one vs the other ? And I don't think they have a 5/8 inch one only 1/2 inch and 50 ft length at Home Depot and hope they offer me different tips . I'd like the jagged saw teeth looking one if I need it . There are other rental places that I might try . Already tried the verry old fashion flat steel hand snake and went in a bit maybe 15 ft but then stopped
