"It's always worth taking care of the things you have." I absolutely loved that.. more people need this kind of mentality.

Any homeowner should know - you stay on top of maintenance and deal with the small problems as soon as they come up, or they'll end up being big, expensive problems further down the line. In this case, skip a few fancy coffees and buy some Dawn, a spray bottle, and a nozzle for your hose now, or let things be and buy a whole new air conditioner and pay a few medical bills to treat the mold allergies on top of it later.

Bless you, Becky! My window air conditioners were smelly and filthy. I needed help and I tried RU-vid and found you! Your air conditioner was my brand, too! Followed your easy directions and installed a shiny, clean and fresh smelling unit in my bedroom window, today! Not bad for a 79 year old (young person)! Could not have done it without you. You are the first person I have subscribed to on RU-vid! Keep on being you and thank you so much. ❤️

As a requirement for my husband to be released from the hospital, I've had to do a deep cleaning. I didn't even THINK about the AC unit. When I realized that it needed to be cleaned, as well, I was already mentally exhausted. Exhausted from dealing with painters, having a floor repaired, carpet cleaners, air duct cleaning and house keeper coming and going all on consecutive days, my mind wouldn't even allow me to THINK of cleaning it so I bought one. Next day, I'm rested and happened upon your video and JUST LIKE THAT, I will be taking the AC unit back to the store today, June 6, 2023 😊😊😊

I sprayed my ac units with coil cleaner and let it sit. I rinsed the gunk out with the water hose until the water was clear from all the sides. I didn't think my nine year old Frigidaire ac units would actually blow cold air like they did when they were brand new, but they did! I'm sleeping like a baby through the night again. Cozy as ever! I wasn't expecting this cleaning to have my ac units blowing like they are now. Thank you so much! 😊❤

jamnjam I live in NY and it's not supposes to get this hot this time of year. Went from 70 to 90 over night! It's raining but, its like the jungle with the humidity factor. We use to get snow every year but, now ever Christmas has no snow. Most of the elderly in NY are not ready to handle that sudden change in temperature. They are use to dealing with 20 below winters and 70 to 80 summers with maybe 90's in August. Texas without the aid of AC would probably kill half of NY no joke.

Its common sense how hard is it to take a few screws and bits of plastic apart? you didnt need a video for that! oddly the instructions tell you the same thing
@ShadovvV

A better solution is to simply use a vacuum cleaner hose on it periodically BEFORE it gets in the condition of the unit being cleaned in this video. You have to keep ahead of the problem so it never gets this filthy. Yuck! You just periodically (like every few months) use the hose part of a vacuum to suck all the dust off the front filter and grills. Basic logic..

My small 5000 BTU unit in my bedroom was hardly "cooling" at all, I thought it was old and needed to be replaced. I had already Googled the directions to the nearest Home Depot. As an afterthought I decided to check out RU-vid just to see how to clean the old thing up before spending any cash. The temperature was 84 degrees in the room with the ac running. Miserable, with a capital M. I watched Becky's video and followed directions. Amazing ! The room temperature is now 72 degrees at mid afternoon in my room now. Comfortable. Capital C. I never made it to Home Depot. Kept my money in my pocket, and I'm about to take a nice, cool nap. Thank You Becky !

Just did a deep clean and appreciate the tips. A couple of things I learned that could help other people. #1 - the styrophoam surrounding the hamster wheel is in 2 pieces. You can take a razor blade and make 2 cuts on the black foam/tape pieces. Once cut you take off the top piece and then the bottom. Making it easy to do a deeper clean on the wheel #2 - To accelerate the drying process I used a blower. It cut my drying time to 30-45 min. #3 - If you use Lime Away or CLR on any rusty parts, especially the fins just be prepared that if you brush them after the fact they will probably fall off.

Haha, I saw that one, I think it was actually like $19 or something, and it foamed up a bit just like Becky's 'few drops of Dawn.' That guy didn't do half as good a cleaning job, and he was ready to put the sucker back together and you could see all the black gunk (probably mold) still on the inside. Of course, he had the A/C already 'prepped' for the video, so we never got to see him take it apart or put it back together. Y'all guys may laugh, but you know, if you haven't done this before, there's nothing wrong with wanting to see the process from start to finish, especially if you're doing it by yourself, just to know how easily it really can be done.

OMG, Becky.... You are a lifesaver!! First let me tell you I am NOT a mechanically inclined person. The thought of taking my A.C. apart and cleaning it terrified me. Actually, I was not even aware that a window A.C. needed to be cleaned. So, after 10 years of use you can imagine how filthy and gunked up it was. Mildew, slimy algae, dead decayed leaves.... Nasty. Not to mention all the built up dust and crud in the fins. I followed your tutorial exactly and am thrilled with the results. The only thing I did different was to use coil cleaner instead of dishsoap. And you are right.... SO EASY!!!! Thank you!!!!!!

I used Glad Press n Seal over the electronic components to protect them from moisture, but still tried to avoid wetting the area. @@steely_mike - Respect for the pros, for sure. Problem is, though, you can buy a whole new A/C unit (especially the smaller ones) and still put money back in your pocket, for less than the cost of one servicing. Me, I'd never toss something I could fix, but plenty of people would and do, that's the sad truth. Guy further up the comments chain said he's reclaimed a bunch of discarded A/Cs from the alley and after cleaning them up like this, they worked fine! This video will keep my little bedroom unit running well for a long while, I guess.

Hi Becky,Thank you for sharing this video. Me and my brother just took out my 4 year old air conditioner same brand as the one have here except mine is a 10,000 BTU. After watching your video we took the back panel off and front panels and were able to get to all the dirt, The only thing we did not do is use the water hose although I wish I had but either way my air conditioner is as clean as it was when I bought it new. It is no re installed and I notice now it has better power and blows better. What we did was we took a spray bottle and put some dawn dish liquid and some warm water in and we followed all your steps except for using the hose. We tilted the unit up on a table and sprayed it with the spray bottle a good several times and took a sponge and paper towels and just wiped it clean. I also took the vaccumm cleaner to get the excess dirt out. But come next summer I will use the water hose just like you did on yours. Thanks again this was very helpful. Now this is something I can do once a year to my unit and help pro long the life of it

The video is very good but I will add a bit to the video just for safety. 1. Don't wash the motor that spins the two fans blades. (grey unit is the motor at 9:24 ) Washing motor/ a wet motor will short circuit and may cause electrocution. 2. There is no need to wash the tall Black unit "Compressor" (Compressor at 5:40) Most AC has a small circuit panel near compressor (Black unit). Again wetting it means short circuit and fire. 3. The only thing you need to clean is the condenser fin blades ( condenser at 5:00) This is where the air is sucked in and most of the dirt is accumulated. Take a toothbrush and gently clean the dirt by stroking it in the longitudinal direction (you may need to use soap water or non-rust cleaner to do so). 4. Wrap a couple of plastic bags around the motor and electrical components. Be Safe

Parviz Gul, that was my BIGGEST FEAR! Thank you for the additional information on cleaning! I know that the inside of the house is supposed to be dry and the outside of the unit is exposed to the weather. Putting both together makes a heck of alot more sense then just hitting it with a hose! Thank you very much! I am extremely phobic about fires! I feel more confident about this situation now. I want to Express my Gratitude for adding the extra measure of safety!!!!

Thanks for this very helpful video and For the inspiration. My biggest concern was how long it would take to dry out and as you said two hours was long enough. I also use the fan to help it along. Also, I did mine in my bathtub. Anyone who's going to do this in the bathtub I recommend using a rubber mat so that you don't scratch your tub. Also have a screen handy to catch all the leaves that may go down your drain and it helps to have a showerhead that has the ability to be removed and has some flexibility. The ability to change to different spray pressure settings helps as well. Thanks again!

That's a great home method to doing it with the dish soap instead of buying an industrial cleaner (I have some environmentally friendly cleaner since I work for a maintenance company, so that's what I use since I have pets). I also take off the Styrofoam pieces to get better access. Some folks might be objected to this but you can also add a tiny bit of bleach or vinegar to the spray mixture for cleaning the panels to help with stains, tough build ups, and mildew in the unit. Plus to avoid any future head aches, if the screws look like they are degrading badly (rust, stripping on the heads for the bit) get some replacement screws and have them just in case, make sure they are stainless steel. Thanks again for a great video Miss Becky.

@@sandyk8594 I used the foam coil cleaner and mine was so dirty that within just a few minutes the foam turned dirty and was dripping basically half dirt. I had to do it a few times then scrubbed it and my coils look entirely different. Before my 8000 BTU couldn't even keep my 9x12 room under 83-85 degrees in the back corner when its been above 105 degrees outside during the day and at night when it was 80-85 my room was still above 75 degrees. I prefer the foam over the pink coil cleaner but maybe its because the pink stuff I used was decades old.

Becky; thinking it over, and taking heart from your low-keyed presentation, I thought: what the heck. While I didn't take the unit out of the window or use a hose, I DID take the screws off the faceplate and cleaned the fins using a vacuum cleaner... man was it filthy... then I used warm wet paper towels to clean the inside of the faceplate and put it back together... man; talk about night and day: my AC has gone from a trickle of cold air to never so powerful as now. You're my hero Becky, especially during a heat wave. thank you so much.

@@nancyhfranco4334 - No way, Dr. Nancy, no way: I'm now 70, I live alone and, while I currently store the AC in the closet 9 months of the year, which is a simple up & down (with sometimes an intermediate pause onto the bed which is halfway between up & down... and oh, by the way: I just moved the AC yesterday, on my birthday, back into the window from its winter quarters on the closet floor) of, I don't know, maybe 50 lbs? Anyway, the tub is a whole other kettle of fish: pick up the AC, see if I can make it thru the narrow bedroom door while holding it, then thru the narrow bathroom door (ditto) and then how am I going to set it down in the tub while avoiding another hernia and worst of all, eventually taking it OUT of the tub & somehow back into my bedroom window... unless, that is, you want to do it for me, doc? And anyway, tada!: no hose in the bathtub. You don't just helter-skelter jump into a large project without thinking it through, step by step, and I can guarantee you this: a new AC unit would be cheaper than another hernia operation, trust me on this. The real value and lesson of Becky's video is her upbeat can-do attitude, which is a treasure that she shares with anyone who comes here.

What a wonderful video … many will appreciate … I’m a retired HVAC tech and just want to add one very important point … the condenser fan blade has a ring all around the outside … (most do anyway) It is placed there to help with removing heat from the coils by the ring slinging the water from the pan that the cooling side has removed and drops into the pan for drainage and for the condenser fan to then sling that cold water into the condenser coil for heat removal … unfortunately this … over time collects dirt and then creates a Matt that isn’t very visible because it’s hidden behind the shroud … and the condenser fan pushes the air out … these new units don’t make it easy to clean that Matt build up very easy … older units had a removable top cover where then a nozzle could easily remove the build up after presoaking as you demonstrated very well. In these models the only way to clean it properly is to soak as much as possible using your method working around the fan blade … multiple times might be necessary … depending on how much dirt is in the air around your neighborhood and Matt buildup on your condenser. Then using a nozzle as you demonstrated blow water from the outside towards the fan blade will at least remove some of the Matt buildup … then carefully try to nozzle additional Matt off by going around the fan blades … but carefully because you don’t want to bend those blades or the fins also and create vibration if you accidentally bend the blades or block air flow with bent fins. All need to be aware that all fins on an air conditioners are made of aluminum and are very soft and will bend easily so bushing on them only in a up down fashion and water jetting only straight on or up & down as well don’t want bend those fins with the brush or water jetting as well. This Matt build up on any condenser is the most important part of cleaning any AC unit because if the heat isn’t removed properly the ac unit needs to run longer to remove the heat from inside your dwelling costing you money and if the problem persists long enough the excess heat will cause the compressor to fail as well, then you’re looking at replacing the whole unit all because the Matt build wasn’t removed or cleaned properly. Your video was great just trying to help everyone out by supplying some additional useful information.

Becky, we've been having SO MANY financial problems lately and I broke down crying the other day over having to maybe get a new AC....not to mention medical issues because in our 30's, me and my boyfriend have been sick SO much this past year and coughing with headaches....after watching your video...I realized I should do this myself...and I followed your instructions, and low and behold.... WE HAD MOLD! So I cleaned it, used mold killer, did EVERYTHING you said exactly as you said, and VOILA! Our house is cold, the AC is no longer leaking, and most importantly, WE CAN BREATH GOOD AGAIN! You literally are an angel, or possibly a good kind of witch with the magic you showed me. Thank you SO much! I love you and you're my new Auntie!

I remember my dad doing this every year before summer here in Tampa FL. as a kid. He kept them spotless so they ran like a top. I remember the two bedroom units were smaller one was a vintage Emerson Quiet-Kool and mine was a Montgomery Wards. The living room unit was HUGE with a high power plug to at as a kid scared me as it looked odd haha. It was a beast. They worked great for many decades in our home until we sold and later central was added.
