This video literally saved me 2,000 dollars, and got me out on the water the next day. The fuel pump inside my VST was locked up. So I took a battery an kept reversing the wires and sure enough it unlocked the fuel pump. Now my boat runs great, and I didn’t have to spend any money! Thank you very much! You are a great mechanic.

Do you actually hear or feel the pump running? I think my VFT fuel pump is jammed but I don't know what the pump is supposed to sound like or behave when it is working. I did exactly what you did switching wires back and forth and I only hear a clicking noise. I found so much sand like substance throughout the VFT and both fuel pumps but not in the fuel filters. I'm assuming it is an aluminum oxide corrosion. I also found water throughout the fuel system.

@Bruce Lott I just picked up a 2001 200hp HPDI that sat for a year as well. Winterized in New England at the end of 2019 and sat all last year. Curious if you got yours fired up yet and/or what you’re doing before bringing it back online.

@brucelott3583 3 года назад
@@SD-unlimited I pulled the plugs, used a lot of fogging oil, turned it over by hand several times. I made sure the fuel pump came on, then started it up on premix . Once it fired up, I changed all the filters, changed the thermostats, removed and cleaned the injectors, cleaned the HO2S, changed the water pump. I also flushed the cooling system with vinegar to get all the scale out. I still have a couple of issues on the boat, but it's coming along. I also installed a water temperature gauge on the dash. I didn't use the Yamaha gauges due to them being faded and I had already installed new analog gauges before I changed the motor.

I want to ensure the I’m doing everything properly during initial startup so that there’s no mysteries or issues. agree, maybe would have done it on a car but you cant get out of a boat and walk home, once a fuel pump starts to cause issues they tend to be near end of life and not worth the time of having to strip it all apart again just to replace a pump that should have been replaced to start with

It is becoming clear to me that fuel related issues are a major problem with outboards. In fact I think you did a video on recurring issues you see regularly and that turned out to be your #1 issue. I am assuming that this 300hp beast spent its previous life hooked up to and drinking out of a fuel/water separator filter. If that is the case, tell me nobody is running unfiltered fuel to an outboard this big and expensive, how did all that debris make its way inside the vapor separator and the various screens and components in the first place? Was the engine pickled in ethanol laden gasoline and simply abandoned to wick moisture of out that south Florida moist marine air, phase separate over time and left to deteriorate? How did it get so bad?

All the vst fuel pumps I’ve ever changed (which is a common thing) cost between $40-100 depending on which engine (Yamablah always seems to be the most expensive). Unless you are talking about $800 being because you didn’t change it and two weeks later your 40 miles off shore at Jeffries ledge tuna fishing and your pump fails and your $600 a year membership of towboat is kicking in now your drinking $100 in beer waiting for the towboat to arrive lol. That’s so interesting that they shut 2 pistons at idle. Are there any other outboards that do this? I guess it would need direct or multi port injection to do this? An OX66 can’t do this right? Since the injectors are through the crank case?

I have a Mercury 40hp 4 stroke EFI. I did a pressure test on my VST and I'm getting 70psi which is very high. It is suppose to be at 42-44psi. I put in a new high pressure fuel pump, but I'm still getting the same 70psi reading. Any ideas on what could be causing the high pressure? Your help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 лет назад
That's odd. 70 is a lot! I could only think of an issue with your pressure regulator or possibly your pressure gauge ;) Most of the time the pressure regulator causes a loss of fuel pressure, but I guess it is a possibility that it could raise the pressure too! Other than that maybe a gasket not seated properly on the output side of the high pressure pump?
@JonnyUFO
@JonnyUFO 5 лет назад
Thanks for the reply! I thought of the pressure regulator too, but it seemed fine when I had to change the high pressure fuel pump out. The pressure gauge is brand new and was pretty spendy, so I wouldn't think it to be that. I just bought it last week to test out the VST. I was having issues with the motor restarting when hot and couldn't hear the fuel pump kick in after that either. That's why I bought a new pump. This is really stumping me!! I haven't ran it long enough to see if the restarting issue has gone away. I'm afraid of the pressure being that high though. Do I run a risk of ruining anything if it's that high?
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 лет назад
No worries! Ok, so the gauge is good. You don't really run too big of a risk, because if the fuel pressure is that high, the engine should run pretty terribly and have some issues. The pressure regulator is the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. How much are they?
@JonnyUFO
@JonnyUFO 5 лет назад
The ones that I have seen online are around $30. That is around the same price as the fuel pump I bought. The only problem is it's a lot harder to find the right make and model pressure regulator for my motor unlike the pump, that was easy to find. The mystery deepens however. I took the boat out around the lake yesterday for about an hour or so, and it seemed ok. It didn't run rough or have problems accelerating or anything. It was still reading 70psi though! How is this possible? I tried letting it sit for about 25 minutes after running to see if I could get it to do that cranking with no fire issue like the first problem I had, but it started right up again. I don't think I let it sit long enough though, because before it seemed I'd have to wait at least an hour or so of not running it to get it to do the cranking with no fire. I'm going to try again today and see how it goes waiting at least an hour this time. I did notice though with the cowling off, I could hear a slight almost like a pulsating hissing noise that went with the sound of the motor coming from the opposite side that the VST is on. It also got louder when accelerating. I'm not sure if that is normal or not? My thought was maybe it was pressure being released somewhere from having such high fuel pressure in the VST. It's really strange, and I'm really confused...
@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 лет назад
Hmm that is interesting, if you want to email me your serial number I could look up the pressure regulator and get you the correct part number. The serial number will be on the starboard side of the engine bracket and will begin with 1 number then it will have a letter and then 6 more numbers, it will look something like this: 1C123456. Not sure what else to say on the pressure side of things. That hissing sound is most likely the idle air controller, that's a normal sound. Hopefully you have fixed it and are now over thinking it :) let me know how it goes!

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 2 месяца назад
Most likely the gasket around the high pressure pump is broken or cracked or whatever and is pressurizing the VST which is pushing fuel out in weird spots :/ If you get stumped, you can look into joining our Boater's Program where we have messaging and a place to upload pictures and videos so we could talk about the issue and give our recommendations during a weekly livestream: boaters.bornagainboating.com/signup/ Hopefully you've figured it out by now and are back on the water though :) best of luck!

You can check the voltage going to the VST pump, make sure it has 12v when the key is turned on, it might cycle so check it as soon as you turn the key on, it might only supply voltage for 5-10 sec and then wait for you to turn the key to try and start it.

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 лет назад
Hello Henry, thank you! If you don't have any running issues and the engine is running properly. You don't need to clean it out. Usually the only reason you will need to go into the VST is if you get a batch of bad gas and suck up a bunch of stuff, or the engine has sat for a few years and has gummed up. Besides that you should be good to go without messing with it :)

If you store the boat, say if you’re in a climate that sees four seasons (I’m from Ohio), part of the winterization process is draining the VST AFTER you’ve ran stabilized fuel through the engine for a period of about ten minutes, and after fogging has been completed.

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 5 лет назад
Probably something to do with the spark or the timing. Evinrudes, depending on the year, have issues like that. Where the timing gets thrown off and they won't fire up but will spin all day. You need an Evinrude tech that knows how to troubleshoot the electrical system :) (That is if the fuel system and other things are operating properly, it could be something as simple as the keyswitch! Has anyone checked for spark?)

My pump is spinning,but on boat after a while it starts to sputter,the engine rpm s are falling.is there a way to check it while out with voltmeter.
@JohnColeman-ul5rj
@JohnColeman-ul5rj Год назад
So, I went through this process. One, Had an issue with the port motor not running good after 3500 rpm would just fall on its face. So, I replaced my low-pressure pumps and my VST pump and filters. What I found was the previous owner appeared to have replaced the low pressure pumps, but when he installed one of them, he bolted a tie wrap behind the top pump, causing it not to seal properly to work the diaphragm. Next, after I assembled everything, the engine would not start. So I was getting volume but no pressure. The tiny O-ring on the VST pump was non existent on the old pump. So, I robbed one from my SRT4 fuel pump. Put it all back together, and my baby fired right up. That was a fun troubleshooting project. I'm going out on the boat tomorrow now!!! Edit: the boat ran great for about half hour and then went right back to the port side motor running like crap. Got home and put the pressure gauge on it and only would get up to 25psi and immediately would drop pressure. so it will be back into the VST for me. Now either the o-ring I put is in the wrong spot, too small, or blew out. Next would be the FPR took a dump. Will see what we figure out this weekend.

the plastic piece that is on top of the vst pump where the wire connector is, is there some sort of gasket that goes there? I didn't hear or see any mention of one in the video

Nope, just that plastic piece, most other VST's have a rubber grommet that goes there. For whatever reason, this VST just has that little white plastic piece that goes on the output port of the pump and slides up into the top of the VST.

I’ve cleaned and bench tested my pump motor and it seems to work fine. When I cycle the key I usually hear the pump motor cut on to pressurize the VST but now when I turn the key to ON I hear no noise and the motor doesn’t run? I tested the power supply into the fuel pump motor when cycling the key and still I power. I also checked the fuses on the starboard panel and all are ok? Am I missing something. Also all the power supply plugs are in and snug.

@BornAgainBoating
@BornAgainBoating 4 года назад
They are hit and miss. Don't go for the cheapest one. I've put one in and it only produced 10PSI! So go with the midrange price pumps. The Axiom pump for these HPDI's seems to be the best one and it's only like $80 or so compared to the OEM at like $600 or so! Obviously OEM comes with no issues, but for saving over $500 ;) that's what I've done personally.
