I’m a fanatic about keeping my skates from smelling. I spray the insides with 91% rubbing alcohol mixed with some tea tree oil and then set them up in front of a fan whenever I’m not on the ice. Even with this routine, they aren’t completely free of smell, but it’s pretty mild. I’m now on the hunt for someplace with one of those machines! Thanks for posting about this topic!

mupi176 That sounds like a great preventative routine! Keep it up! Hopefully you can find one of the SaniSport machines near you.

So important to keep your skates disinfected! I very diligently spray my hockey skates (and all my other gear... You're right about hockey locker rooms being stanky!) with Clear Gear sports spray and let them air out. I also have a Grit mesh top hockey bag so my gear is still getting air circulation when I I do put it back in the bag and keep it outdoors. My skates are about a year and a half old and I'd skate in them once or twice a week (pre pandemic of course). I recently told my friends to smell the inside of my skates. They were shocked that they didn't stink. I told them about my cleaning regimen but they just told me that I must not be skating hard enough. Ouch! LOL.

After a session, I open up my skates as much as possible lay them on their sides and point a fan into the opening and just let the fan air dry it out for a few hours. I set the fan on high speed. When I use to ski a lot, I had a ski boot dryer, which will also work. The dryer has a timer for the heat and fan. The only caveat is that you have to get your skates home fairly quickly so the bacteria and fungus don't get a chance to reproduce. If you need to leave your skates in the bag for a while, your silica gel, baking soda bag, and anti-bacterial spray would have to be used. I didn't know about the fancy ozone machine. I'll have to check that out.

I highly recommend looking into a boot dryer as well. I had a job that required sturdy work boots and I bought one to prevent the stink from settling into the boots. I put my skates on it after every session and it warms up and dries out the interior of the skate by blowing hot hair inside. This gives the bacteria nothing to work with and I think it helps break in the leather more quickly too They’re not too expensive and I highly recommend them especially if you have to wear work boots for your job or you participate in other sports. I had to throw away my first pair of work boots because the stink from my feet had settled in and nothing could get it out. I wasn’t aware of those ozone machines so I vowed to take better care of my new pair of boots!

Great video, Coach Julia! Something that also works for me is buying foot deodorant. Sounds a little gross, but it’s basically a spray that goes directly on your feet to absorb sweat and smells. I bought it to use for working out and it works well for skating too!

I take the insoles out immediately after I skated, every time. There’s usually droplets below them so this is very important for me. Will try the spray!

Hi! I have a lot of allergies and sensitivities, so I wouldn't be able to use this spray. I typically just use a 70 - 90% alcohol solution to sanitize things. Has anyone else tried this on their skates?

Hello! Quick question? What do you recommend for storing your skates? I’ve seen a lot of cute aesthetic posts of skates hanging from their laces on door hooks but I have a feeling that might not be the best idea... any tips?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 4 года назад
The best thing, is to take them out of your skate bag, or open up your skate bag, and let them get lots of air in between sessions. You also want to store them with soft guards on the blades to absorb any moisture. Hanging them on the door is ok, and I am sure it would be a fun aesthetic, but make sure they are really truly dry first.

This is a great video for me! I bought brand new skates RIGHT before my country went into lockdown so i only got to skate in them once, but my rink opens up again on thr 25th so I can't wait to break them in! I also have a question to do with my own feet rather than the skate...I have a problem in both of my feet that causes me a lot of pain the longer I'm on my feet for, but i still really want to skate. Is there such a thing as insoles I can put inside my skates to support the arches of my feet while I skate? I really don't want to have to give it up before I've even started :(
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 4 года назад
So exciting that your rink is opening back up!! Foot pain when skating can be caused by quite a lot of things. For me, it usually means I am tensing up the muscles in my arch when I skate. I usually have to take my skates off for a few minutes and work out the cramp. I am hesitant to give you advice on your own foot pain though, since I can’t really see in person what is going on with your feet. sorry.

Why does one of your pairs of skates have extra blade bracing?
@CoachJulia
@CoachJulia 4 года назад
One pair has the classic MK Gold Star blade and the other is the MK Gold Star Revolution. this blade has a carbon Fiber base connected to the boot, with the Sheffield Steel blade attached to it. This carbon fiber base makes it much more lightweight, and the extra supports keep it strong enough to support quadruple jump landings.

I’m new to this sport, could you please answer me. what’s on your ankle? ankle sleeve? what’s for? and where to buy? thank you
@b.1791
@b.1791 2 года назад
The ankle sleeve you see are her nylon socks. She just gathered it so it wouldn’t go all the way up her leg. She’s also wearing stockings. Nylon stockings under her nylon socks.
@1chienandalou
@1chienandalou 2 года назад
She did have a sleeve. They help with any areas of pain like lacebite or just for a more comfortable/better fit around the ankle/heel etc. A lot of skaters use Bunga brand but there are other/cheaper alternatives too. I have one like hers and another one that is basically a mini sock with two thin layers of silicone (or similar) in between that cushions the top of my feet and the back of the ankle so skates don’t rub/hurt. I actually need them with my current skates all around my ankle and heel since they are very skinny and my boots are too loose otherwise, but am getting split size skates soon so might use them around the top and ankle only to avoid lacebite/comfort. Hope this helps

Oh, get off your social justice high horse. You know nothing about me, nor about any of my 'privileges.' It would be nice if it were more common for people to engage in discussion instead of just making assumptions about others. Alas, discussion seems to be growing more rare however.
