Dirty Kettle? Clean it up (not an Orbit commercial...) Here we talk about cleaning built up shtuff on stainless equipment, and how to passivate new or old equipment. If you stay till the end of the video, Logan also drinks a full gallon of Tea and soils himself!

I rewatch this every time I have to passivate something. Makes me miss ol’ Logan.

For home brewing equipment, you can use something as simple as Barkeepers Friend to passivate.

Great explanation, thanks guys! I did not know is that important to let it air-dry. We'll have to see how that works in the future.

Are you using filtered water if your water is hard? Mine will leave deposits if I let it sit and air dry.

Ever use citric acid for the passivization? If so, any thoughts?
@GenusBrewing
@GenusBrewing 6 лет назад
Yep - Citric acid isn't as industrious but it can be a great option - especially if you're looking for a cost effective and environmentally friendly acid.

Hey Beautiful peope I know the video is about something else, but how can I clean properly the stainsteel hope mash container after boiling? I find really difficult to clean it. Anyone has a powerful smart technique please?

What would you suggest the concentration level be for the sani clean for passivation?
@GenusBrewing
@GenusBrewing 6 лет назад
You would need about 1.5-2oz of saniclean per gallon.

i got a 204 stainless steel kettle , is it okay to used acid, does it apply to a stainless steel kettle

I just run hot water as soon as I'm done brewing so my equipment never needs chemical's to clean.

How often do you recommend doing this? Just when the pot is grody lookin?
@GenusBrewing
@GenusBrewing 6 лет назад
Yep! Basically when the brown build up gets too much for your liking.
@travishuey7627
@travishuey7627 6 лет назад
Another question. If you just wash the pot with PBW at normal concentrations, do you have to do the acid too? Or only when you do a deeper clean like this?

Is there time when you should rinse the acid cleaner off the kettle? You said let it air dry, but no rinse? Just checking.
@edholcomb75
@edholcomb75 5 лет назад
There’s been debate about rinsing on some of the forums. Seems some people have not rinsed and the tanks became discolored and others say they’ve had no problem. I’m curious as well if these guys have had problems with no rinsing.

Contact time is a product of chemical concentration and temperature. Relatively weak solution like this is heated to 60 degrees C in order to effectively work within a 1-1.5 hour time frame. You could reduce the temperature and increase the contact time. As a rough rule-of-thumb, double the contact time for every 10 degrees C you lose. i.e. at 60C, it's 90 minutes. At 50C it's 180 minutes. At 40C it's 360 minutes, etc. Always rinse after passivation. Preferably with demineralised/deionised water. The argument being that the chlorides in tap-water can have an adverse effect on the reformation of the passive layer. In practice though, as long as your tap water is of a decent standard, you'll probably be alright... The chemicals used in this video are a nitric - phosphoric acid blend. They're corrosive and you don't want to leave them the surface. The pickling and passivation "bible's" are ASTM A380 and ASTM A967. Get a copy of either of these. They explain the various options and technicalities with regards to this process better than I can here. Oh, and be safe! The concentrate chemical contains 38% nitric acid according to the data sheet. That won't "melt your skin off", but it will cause severe burns - and you'll lose your eyes if you get in them... Have fun!

I have searched high and low for the five star acid cleaner #5 and I for the life of me can not find it anywhere to purchase do you have any suggestions on where to go to be able to pick up a gallon or 2 of it ?

John Palmer says to use Bar Keeper's Friend to passivate. It seems a lot cheaper.

Are you guys running a brew store & if so is the store online. Can I order stuff from your store online? I live in a rural area ...so no place for me to get any brew supplies with in 200 miles. I would like to support the places / people who I look to for all the great brew info I’ve gotten like your RU-vid channel. Cheers! 🍻😊👏
@GenusBrewing
@GenusBrewing 6 лет назад
The acid cleaner is a tough one to buy online because it is technically a HAZMAT shipping item so a lot of places don't mess with the shipping hazard. We are a brew supply store, however for the HAZMAT reason we cannot ship the acid cleaner :( We appreciate the support though!
