Oh my goodness! I watched so many videos on how to clean an ac window unit and yours was the best!!! Plus, my unit can't be removed (like yours) so this is exactly what I needed. Thank you so much! You have a new fan and sub! Be blessed!! 😁👍🏻
2020 here. Just found this and exactly what I need and incidentally I have the exact same model of AC as shown in the video! It even helped me find the right filter replacement part. Thanks a lot!
You are very resourceful. I repair HVAC and refrigeration for a living and many people think that you cant clean air conditioners with water, not realizing that they stay damp and make ice then defrost the ice, which is water lol. And my favorite tale is that you cant lie a refrigerator down, it has to stay upright or it will be ruined. Anyways, I love this video! I removed mine from the window and hosed it down which was a pain to do. Imma try this, much better way.
Was going to say (not sure) but it looks like a two piece ac, you can remove 1 screw on each side and pop the front cover off....then you can slide the whole unit out leaving only the shell......just got done doing this with two Frigidaires. You can clean the coils this way....I use coil cleaner...let it sit the spray through with a hose.....
Click on the circular cog next to CC, click on speed and change to 1.5 or even 2. This speeds up the video, which was very informative. I do much of the same to clean my a/c. My hint is to use liquid fabric softener on the filter when you're done washing it. Just pour a little onto the filter while it's still wet. I just use my hand to coat the mesh and use a towel to dry it off. It provides a coating of light wax and a nice smell. Makes it a little easier to clean next time due to anti-static effect. And smells good.
Thanks for sharing this, my mom taught me a long time ago & I'd forgotten all about it! (& sadly no longer have my Mom or Grandma around to learn from)...
Thanks I am definitely going to try this tip! UPDATE- it works! AC drain was clogged after using this cleaning method that problem was solved without removing the AC
Thx for reminding me about speeding it up, cuz it's sweltering and DRY dry out here in TX (109 today, folx) and I need results a lil sooner rather 'n later 😂
For anyone who watched this and wondered if it works, my air conditioner is now blowing out wonderful cold air. For several weeks it was making horrendous noises and cracking sounds could be heard. Well it was frozen in addition to being really dirty since I've never cleaned it. I was so scared it would break before the weather cooled down plus it was barely blowing out air. So I'm praying Huge blessings on this wonderful lady!!!!!!
Something that most people forget to do it to MAKE SURE THE WATER HOLE ISN'T CLOGGED. You shows the hole beneath the a/c. Mine was clogged, had to clear it out. Thanks for the reminder.
I am so excited to have found your video. I am legally blind I live with my dogs on a dirt Rd on a cow dairy in the direct sunlight. I am responsible for all my maintenance upkeep. So far it has been hit & miss. Most ppl I know or can find do not have the same living factors that affect my conditions. The way you discribe & explain as you go with a soothing tone of voice is WONDERFUL. I can follow what you say as you say it, without having to stop & think about what you meant. Thank you. I look forward to finding anything else you post. This has been a GREAT help in my life.
It's 2019 and I found this video. Thanks so much. My air conditioner is blowing out black pieces of mold I assume that's what it is. I'm about to go to work on this thing and get it clean. You saved me money because I was going to buy another one.
I had black dry pieces of mold and I did all this to the unit but can't get up the back, but now it's blowing out nice cold air. I have a different brand upstairs and did the same thing but when I went to turn it on, it was not really working. I hope if I let it fully dry, it works(I hope) I have to do this again next week because I haven't washed mine in over 2yrs 😳🤭 it smells so fresh now. I actually used oxyclean and boy it cleaned it great but to upkeep it, I need to use that mold and mildew spray 😊
@@jennifertwigg-garnsey2113 What's happened is your ac is not tilted down enough in the back so the water from humidity leaks out in the back by gravity. If it's not tilted enough the water sits in the ac and created mold and sludge from the dirt, leaves, bugs, etc. The fan also doesn't help if the mold and sludge is sitting in the AC, the fan spits it out all over the place and you could ruin the AC. It's happened to me as the fan spit out all the sludge onto my windows and window tracks. My neighbour told me in time and I had to remove the ac. Took out the cover of the ac by removing all the screws and what I found inside was mud all over the ac and took me 2 hours to clean it out. The lady in the video has to find a way to remove the ac from the wall, remove the cover, and clean it all out. I have the same AC as hers and let me tell you Frigidaire make amazing air conditioners that blow very cold air but you need to clean them inside every 2-3 years to remove bugs, leaves, and whatever else doesn't belong in there.
Honestly, buy another one, or remove your unit from the window and take the entire case off to clean it. Do not mess with mold. This cleaning video cannot clean the mold out of your unit, because its in the blower compartment which you cannot access without removing the case from the AC.
I watched many videos on how to clean out a window unit and yours was the best! I cant remove mine and was having leaking under the unit that was coming inside the house. Down the window sill and dripping onto the carpet. After following what you did on the video my window unit has never looked so clean! The leaking has stopped(must have been clogged somewhere) and the air coming out is much colder and fresher.
My mom always used an old tooth brush to gently "comb through" those little metal fins. It works really great to get the gunk out. Thanks for video. I have the exact unit as u. I'm getting the mold up on the plastic and foam...where the air comes out.
Sarah Miller you can spray that with bleach and then rinse it down with water after it sits a bit. Tooth brush does work great for heavy gunk. I usually vacuum first too but the shop vac is so loud I didnt want to mess with it while doing video.
Faith Abounds at Melody Acres im having this issue with my unit. Same as yours. Does the water drain from that top part or will I need to tape over the buttons? I’ll be trying to screw the top part off if I can manage it.
This video was very informative. I watched it twice to make sure I had all the supplies I needed and got to work. There was so much gunk inside I couldn't believe my eyes. The only thing I did different was use a garden hose to spray the back of the unit and sprayed until I didn't see anymore gunk. Now it blows super cold and doesn't have that odd smell it had before. Thank you so very much for posting this video, it was a life saver!!!
I saw your video and my son and I would like to say THANK YOU!!! My units can't be removed as well and I was wondering how to clean them...they started to have a funky smell and we couldn't stand it anymore. Seeing your video was a true blessing. My family says thanks!.
I WILL TAKE UR BITCH!!!!! I have a cat his too nosy and likes to poke her head and paws where she shouldn't. She's fascinated by the AC and box fans. It'd be my luck I'd come home and find her with her head stuck. lol Thanks for the input tho! Might be useful to others reading comments.
THANK YOU so much for posting this!!!! I would have been too afraid of breaking something to try to pull them out except for your comment. I was able to pull the louvers and the air direction fins out and wash them, they were gross!!! And they popped right in again. (Why can't Frigidaire put this in their owner's manual???) THANK YOU from the bottom of my happy healthy lungs!!!!!
This was soooooo helpful!!!!! I can't thank you enough for showing me how to clean our AC without removing it. We were actually on the verge of getting a new one because it was working so poorly. It was just stunning how much junk I was able to remove from the inside. I never even knew before that the front cover could be removed. Huge thanks!!!!
Thank you so much for sharing this. I live on the 4th floor and cannot lift the ac because of back problems. I have the EXACT same ac as yours, and I had no idea of how to clean it. You are a Godsend to me!
Thanks for a great video! Our unit is like yours, and so we did a deep clean yesterday after seeing your video. We discovered something and wanted to share it in case you had not noticed it on yours. My daughter bent down and looked up behind the digital panel and found the fins extend up about two inches behind there. The dirt was an inch thick up in that area! We used a brush to grab as much as we could, and will vacuum today with those micro attachments to clean that area more thoroughly. Couldn't spray it as it would have made mud. Thanks again.
My unit just started to leak indoors (has been installed for over 5 years w/o issue) so I'm figuring the drain was clogged and found your video while I was browsing for info. Great cleaning ideas that I'm going to likely adopt, and appreciate the suggestions.
I have this exact AC. I’ve had it since 2015 and this summer the air just smells like mold and mildew. The top part where the air comes out is so gross as well. I always clean the filter, but I’m definitely gonna try your method! I live on the top floor of my building so, I can really get to the back to check for a clog. I’ll have to see what I can do, but tomorrow and cleaning this dang thing! Thank you for this video!!! Much appreciated
Bijou Yes! I put some towels down around the window sill and took the front part off like in the video. I mixed bleach and water and sprayed the top where I saw the black build up. Sprayed it until it was all gone. Then I sprayed the bottom vents with regular soap and water. The towel caught any drainage that might happen inside. And since the AC is leveled the rest of the water drained outside. Every removable part I washed in the bathroom. I turned it on after putting it back together and I was like brand new....minus the bleach smell. I’d say it’s better to use soap and water and avoid the bleach if the smell might bother you.
Just started to look for a video on this because mine kept blowing a breaker and the very first one I came across was yours with the exact same AC as mine. Awesome 😎

Must say I was skeptical at first. Like who sprays all that crap in their AC - so naturally went to comment and waited to see who wrecked their AC. My apologies and Wow wonderful job.
OMG you are a god send I've never owned a wall unit before and had no idea how to clean it without removing it from the wall THANK YOU a thousand times over your video is the best one I've found and it works!! THANKS AGAIN
Your a lifesaver. I have the same air conditioner. I can’t take it out of my window. You have the cleanest A/C I have seen out of all the RU-vid Videos I have seen. I haven’t cleaned my air conditioner since I’ve owned it. ( 5 years ). I have a mess ahead of me. Lol!!! But I don’t care I will clean it for as long as have to so, it looks like yours and I’m sure it will work a lot better. Thank you for this.
Young lady, this process you have taught me will save me money, but most important, I can clean my a/c without removing it. Thank you very much! I’m going to subscribe and give you a high five! Oh, and I’m going to clean my a/c in the morning, we have some great days now before the unit is really needed!
OMG THANK U SO MUCH, I WAS WATCHING SEVERAL VIDEOS BUT YOURS WAS DOWN HOME, SIMPLE AND STR8 TO THE POINT, I LIKE THE FACT THAT IT WAS MY SAME SCENARIO CAN'T REMOVE. I WAS WONDERING IF I HAD WAIT FOR IT TO TRY BEFORE PLUGGING AND TURNING IT BACK ON AND WHEN I SAW YOU WERE DOING IT I WAS LIKE COOL. I WENT AND BOUGHT 2 CANS OF AC-Safe Air Conditioning Coil Foaming Cleaner SELF RINSE AND SINCE I DON'T HAVE A WATER HOSE I GOT AN HDX 1 Gal. Pump Sprayer AND ALTHOUGH IT DIDN'T HAVE THAT MUCH FORCE IT STILL WORKED LIKE A CHARM FOR NOT HAVING GARDEN HOSE AND ACCESS TO OUTSIDE WATER. I COULDN'T BELIEVE HOW COLD THAT AIR CAME OUT, MY PUPS WERE SUFFERING WHILE I WAS CLEANING IT AND WERE SO HAPPY WHEN I GOT IT GOING AGAIN. THANKS SO MUCH =)
OMG!!! Thank you so much!!! I stayed up late watching your 27 minute video breathing in the stink of for from our permanently affixed ac unit. Went out this afternoon with cleaning solution and a water hose. So much nastiness came out! Now the air is clean and fresh. Thank you!
Hi, I also live in a mobile home and I had to install a window unit and the instructions said put an awning over the top if the unit will mostly be in the sun. I put it in 3 years ago and this is the first year I have had to clean it,and I did it more or Less the way you did it and it works. Thanks for the reassurance. God Bless.
I really like your detail to how to do it without removing it. especially not being able to carry my AC out the window down the stairs and out to the back porch like a lot of utubers think I should do, but, you talked a little too soft for me I'm old and I can't hear😄😄😄 but thank you for the info. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Your video is fantastic! Just wanted to let you know, you do not need a special tool to revome the front casing on your model. There are two screws holding it in. Remove the screws, you can then release each bottom corner by gentle pushing outward ( i do 1 side at a time) after thats done gently lift towards you while pulling up (like a hinge) until it releases. It does make a snapping noise at that point, which made me jump and think I broke it the first time i did it. (I didn't). I leave the electric wire connect and just clean carefully around it.
Faith all I can say is thank you, thank you, thank you !!! You just saved me $175.00 that an ac guy wanted to charge me. Of course he was going to take it out of the wall. But after watching your video I think I can accomplish much the same thing ! I have the exact same model in my mobile home in Fl. The only challenge I have is that there is a protective cage around mine on the outside that can't be removed. But i think with a lot of cleaning spray and my garden hose set on "shower" ( so I don't bend the fins ) I think I can get it done. Or at the very lest much cleaner than it is now ! Again many thanks !
i was wondering if I could clean it without having to take it apart, so thanks for showing it's OK to do, and how to. incidentally, I have the exact same AC unit.
Best video on cleaning window air-conditioner I've seen! I can't remove mine either and didn't know what to do besides the filter and vacuuming the inside out. It's been running water down the side of my house and the paint is completely gone. Can't wait to try this so going to do right now. Thank you and God bless!!!
Hey Pam, I vacuum first with the brush attachment, being careful not to bend the fins. That gets all the loose debris and gunk off the front. Then spraying with a bleach type cleaner, then plain water, does keep it clean. Good video Faith.
@@tammiephillips8531 they won't do as good a job to get rid of the heat. Not a big deal if they bend a little though, just be mindful that they should stay straight.
Take your water hose with the sprayer, and spray the whole inside of the outside of the unit, once you have hit it with the Clorox, and it will run like brand new for quite a bit longer between cleanings, also take a wire hanger and Rheem that drain opening as it drains, all of the slime and water will come out, I do this with my unit, wich happens to be the same as yours, it is also a Frigidaire..I believe we have the 8000 btu unit, and it lasts usually about two months between cleanings, you absolutely have the right idea just need to add those steps and it will make your life a little easier, great video!
This was slow to watch, but I totally get why! : ) What a lot of work to compensate for not being able to remove it and use a hose. You are such a hard worker! Thanks for showing all of us this method. I appreciate your time to do this and post!
thank you so much for making this video! most of the AC cleaning videos have the AC on a table - i don’t think they realize how many of us can’t do that!!!
Howdy. I just cleaned mine like this but had very HEAVY build up over a few yrs. What I found that got the stuck on grime off was a bronze or stainless brush, about the size of a toothbrush. They are only a couple, few bucks at Auto parts of hardware stores. Wish I CLD send a pick. Thanks for the great video and tips. God Bless you mam
Best A/C cleaning video so far. Most have you remove the unit and I haven't seen any that sprayed the inside of the unit. Thanks! And that's the exact A/C I have.
Great video. I have the same unit. Mine is clogged on the inside of the condenser coils, where the fan blows through them to the rear of the unit. I had to use a water hose and compressed air to unclog and clean the fins on the condenser core. It saved me the cost and trouble of replacing it too soon, since it's not even two years old
I have the same model unit. I take the front cover off so I can clean it and have better access to the aluminum fins. Plus you can use a wet/dry vac to help dust off the styrofoam and fan at that time. If you spray the front with water, be sure to cover the electrical parts to prevent any damage.
Thanks for your video. I have a very heavy one in the kitchen , and even though I clean the filter EVERY day...seriously , and in addition to this , I use dryer sheets, that I put in front to catch more dust, which seem to not restrict air flow, but help keep it cleaner(and make the house smell good) , but with having tons of dirt and dust and a unit running 24/7 in Texas, this brand new unit froze after a little less than 2 months . I did a light clean this morning, but will do a really good clean tonight, after the temps are only in the 80ies at night ..hahaha. I have pulled out smaller units and hosed them down before, but I wanted a way to keep it in the window, at least for a whole season, we might be able to pull it in the winter . So, thank you
+Regina Roberts You're most welcome! Other than humidity Texas and Florida are the same heat and dust wise. It's such a nightmare on ac units! Another big help with dust is adding a cut to size AC filter. The one I use is Duck brand and its 24" X 15'" and 1\4" thick. I cut it to the size of the grill cover, not the filter, so it completely fills any gaps. The neighbors dog had shredded it when I had cleaned it few days before I filmed this. lol I have 2 of those now so I can swap them out quickly and I don't have to do heavy cleaning as often. Thanks for watching!
Yes, I used to do that, too, but sadly my new unit has the "pull-out" type of filter, I can`t open the door and put another one in, in addition to the regular one. So, I came up with the idea of the dryer sheets. Once I have the unit running, there is plenty of suction to keep them in place, just by putting them in the front of the grill. I change those 4 times a day, keeps the house smelling good for a bit (got lots of dogs, too) , but nothing prevents the A/C coils from getting dirty . Will be cleaning it tonight or early tomorrow. Those 100 degree temps are really getting a bit annoying. It`s supposed to cool off tomorrow and rain coming :-) -yeah
I'm living in a house where the wall unit is actually attached and adhered into the wall so taking it out isn't an option, so this was insanely helpful! I've never had to clean a unit myself as previous landlords in other places always hired someone to do maintenance, so thank you for sharing how you deal with this!
Thank you for this I've never had a window unit before I have no idea what I'm doing and I came across the video and it's the same unit I have! You are saving my day and my money!!!! thank you thank you thank you
Well, I know what I’m doing tomorrow! Gonna clean my window ac using the info I received watching your video. Thank you very much for taking the time to make the video and share it. You did a great job mostly using only one hand! Had to be tough on the forearms! Very informative and well done.
Thank you so much for taking the time to do this video! Very informative. I have a window unit like this one that's too heavy to move. Saved me some money for sure!
Thank you for this video , right after seeing this video I right away went and cleaned my window A/C all I had to use was Awesome , I get at the dollar store , it loosened the dirt up right away ,I couldn't believe all the dirt that came out , my A/C started freezing yesterday so I hope this will help it not to freeze
That is the cleanest air conditioner I've ever seen in my life. I have that same one and now it's acting like it doesn't want to work. I know what I'm going to be doing today. Thank you so much.
Thank you so much. I have the exact same AC and it stinks like mold I'm a bit scared to spray all that stuff in there. But I'm going to try to clean my units tomorrow. I'm favoriting this video. Thank you ♡♡♡
Thank you so much! This is EXACTLY what I needed today! My 2 window units have been tripping the breakers repeatedly, which is a good way to wear out the breakers. My window units are removable, but one is on the second story and they are so heavy and awkward! It is a major job to get them in or out. You have saved my day!!! God bless you! :D I will try to post a report on whether this solved my breaker-tripping problem, for those who have a similar issue.
Hey (jeanbean1414), I got to thinking about your "Tripping Breaker Issue". You mentioned that you have not 1 but 2 AC Units in your home, is that correct? If so, it may have something to do with your 2 AC Units alone (and if they are running constantly), as in you have to much of a draw on the power...dependng on your homes wattage for your area 210 volts or 120 volts? But hit me back after the cleaning of AC's, just to see if it stops "Tripping the Breaker", I'm interested and a little curious to find out? Diane from Ontario, Canada. Cheers!
Thank you for your video, I did it and it worked great!!!!!! I took mine out followed your steps and used my garden hose. My pets thank you too!!!!! God Bless you for taking the time to make and post this video! Peace
Omg I had no idea you could open the face on a AC and take filter out!.🤔🙃🤐 I havent cleaned mine since I purchased it almost 5 years ago. Its 11pm now and I just finished my bedroom and livingroom AC 😂😂😂thank you!!!
@Faith Abounds It looks like there is mold in the vents where the styrofoam is. You should be able to pop those vents outs with a screw driver. Even if you can’t, you can spray the vents and styrofoam with vinegar, peroxide or a product that is all natural - Benefect. A mold specialist told us to spray vinegar and peroxide periodically in that area. Great video.
Harold Ginn I just spray the vinegar straight full strength. I also spray the peroxide straight full strength because it’s already at 3% in the bottle that I buy from Walmart. I sometimes add drops of tea tree, lavender or orange oil to the vinegar but it’s not needed. Once it dries it smells so fresh. I have mixed peroxide and vinegar and it was great. When I mix the two, I usually add 1/4 peroxide to the bottle and 3/4 vinegar but half and half would be great too. It works and keeps the mold out of the styrofoam. I even spray the grid with it.
Ok, thank you. Few more questions, I apologize for the barrage: What kind of vinegar? White or AC? Do you mean 3% peroxide? That is the strongest I can find to buy, anywhere. Do you scrub inside the vents? How do you know it gets the mold that you cannot see? How long do you let all of this dry after cleaning the entire AC before you can turn the AC back on? I am super concerned because ours, only a year old, is full of mold inside the vents where the Styrofoam is. A resident here has copd and she cannot go long with no AC/air circulation with it so hot and humid here. Thanks so much!
Harold Ginn Harold Ginn I just use the white vinegar. Yes, I meant 3% peroxide. Thanks for catching that. We have to spray our AC every couple of months to keep the mold out of the styrofoam and vents. They don’t tell people that but it really is what needs to be done with any window refrigerated AC to keep the mold out. I have asthma and if there is any mold at all, I cough so we keep it cleaned out. Also another good tip, before turning your AC off, run it on fan for a bit to dry it out and that helps keep down the mold also. The Benefect product is very pricey and we have used it. It’s a natural product with no VOC’s in it. However,we use the peroxide and vinegar more. I used the Benefect a few weeks ago and it started smelling of mildew within a few days due to high humidity so I sprayed it with the peroxide straight, then vinegar straight and it’s still clean. 👍🏼 I spray it real good and in the past, have stuck a paper towel back there and moved the fan by hand to wipe off any residue. Now that I spray it consistently, I haven’t had to do that. Oh and my husband went outside and sprayed all the vents outside with peroxide and vinegar also. There wasn’t any mold outside but we just sprayed it anyway. Also...When I clean the removable filter, due to allergies, I don’t tap it, I just turn it backwards and use sprayer to spray it off. Then I use a mixture of 1 cup vinegar, 1 cup dawn and spray it and wash it that way. Then dry with paper towels. I hope it works for you all like it does for us. I’m not a professional so have to make a disclaimer, this is what works for us.
Harold Ginn I don’t time how long I leave it off. I kind of just know. I let it sit for a good 30 minutes and then turn on fan to dry out and then start the AC on cool.
My ac is making lot of strange might be a bearing but way to big deal to fix but I'm definitely giving this try try. very impressive how well it cleaned
You saved me from having to buy a new one. It's so nice and cool, but it's a little loud. I hope it's just from the wetness from the spray bottle. Great and one of the best videos I've ever watched 👌😉
Thank you so much for this video it really helped me last summer I followed all your steps only thing I’ve done different was took my power washer to the backside of the unit. You saved me nearly $1000 I thought my window unit had completely went out. It’s a big 220 unit that I have
That was a big ass spider. This video is a GODSEND! Thank you so much! I bought acan of no rinse ac coil cleaner but I used it method, rinsed and then blasted it all around with the can of cleaner, let her dry n BAM! SO FRESH N SO CLEAN! Thanks darlin!
They sell coil cleaner in a can at your local hardware store. 8 bucks. They also sell a mesh media filter and can cut to fit to protect the coil and the existing filter much better. Will not have to clean anything but the pre filter. Sorry, I’m an HVAC tech and have a window unit in my room. The only thing I have to clean is my condenser coil(outside coil) . Note you never want to spray high VOC and corrosives on your evap(indoor coil) as it will cause it to rust over time. That bluish coating you see on the coil is what’s protecting the coil from corrosion. Spraying that mold and mildew remover starts to remove the protective coating as you can tell it already has .
Can you spray into the vent area? I can see mold in that top part but don't have access to it with out removing and taking completely apart and its built into a wall.
Thanks! Definitely did a great job showing step by step! This might be helpful but I used a 5 dollar pump spayer I got from harbor freight for rinsing, and works great
Just an FYI ... be careful and pay special attention to whether your system requires to be drained or not. Some systems require a small amount of water in the base to help cool the system it self. Other wise if u drain it.. the system will run much too hot ending up damaging the compressor and other components thus having to replace entire unit.
@@naydiaa7466 as long as you did not get any electronic components wet during the process you can use the unit right after cleaning. However. . If you did get the electronic components wet during the process you must allow it to completely dry before using the unit or damage could occur. Drying time can very pending on the unit.
Correct, but it’s not the complete story. Some AC units will still operate with the drainage cap removed (allowing full drainage) but it will cause the unit to be up to 50% less effective at cooling. I wasn’t aware that it could break some units though. Not really sure why manufacturers put removable drain caps on their units anyways, if the unit shouldn’t have it removed? In case the AC becomes excessively clogged or flooded?
I really enjoyed your video. I went a little farther. I tucked a towel under the inside of the unit. And after "spray rinsing" I used my leaf blower after 2 hours on the inside coils to blow out some water and "stuff". One of our units was acting weird and a warning buzzer was going off previously and after cleaning that unit it is now running well & fine & cold air.👍
Nice job. A suggestion would be a box fan with a 20"x20" furnace filter running in the same room that has the A/C. It's a good idea for air/cleaner purifier for large spaces and will help lessen your A/C cleanings. Those furnace filters are good for 3 months.
@practicalguy973 have recommended this countless times to friends with dust/Pet hair/or on their major house cleaning days. I buy either furnace filter or even a customizable piece of a/c replacement filter, hole punch to make holes for tie down and some small zip ties. I attached mine with the zip ties due to moving it from room to room. Have heard of others running a thin bungee cord side to side on top/bottom. It’s a great hack -gross to see what it pulls out of the air/your home but well worth it. In absence of my old air purifier-even used a 3M Allergen/2x dust central a/c Filtrate filter zip tied to the back side of a good box fan running on high….it did a great job!
Thank you so much for this! I tried doing this + a gentle toothbrush..... then i got a lot of furs becoz of my dogs and it may be one reason why it is blowing hot air. Thank you again. 😊
This filters do very little, but they sure can mess up an ac when dirty. You would be surprised at the number of people that do not know about those filters or that they need cleaned periodically. Thanks for sharing
Lee Ralph Thanks so much for watching and the feedback. Really appreciate it. I hope it helps get the word out to people. Its really scary what's lurking in peoples ACs. Thanks again!
I highly recommend unplugging your ac before cleaning any part of it!!! Also, I use a soft paint brush to brush the coils... this seems a little bit of overkill to me..
Thank you SO much for posting this. My husband and I were at the ends of our ropes because our window units smelled so bad. Now...they smell clean and are blowing so much cooler. One of my units has the filter reset, so it took about an hour for it to completely dry and run as normal. Before that it kept beeping as though someone was pressing buttons and the timer light wouldn't go off. I realized that's the units way of resetting after cleaning.
+Amanda Bealer You are so welcome. They can certainly build up a horrible smell. They make them all so different too. Mine has a 3 minute reset. So happy you have fresh air again!
Amanda Bealer after I cleaned mine it has been pressing its own buttons too over and over it's been almost 24 hours and it's still doing it, I was hoping it would reset like yours did you said it stopped after 1 hour and you have not had a problem since? Also the buttons on the ac don't work anymore only the remote will work to change anything or turn it on and off
+shessosweet88 Cleaning it shouldn't effect the controls. When cleaning your cleaning the fins. Always unplug the unit and turn it off prior to cleaning and stay way from controls. If you haven't already tried this unplug the unit, wait 5 minutes and plug it back in and then set it to cool. The condenser has a built in delay, mines 3 minutes, before it cycles on. That's to prevent over heating. Your controls aren't supposed to reset themselves other than when you unplug it or in some cases turn it off.
Faith Abounds at Melody Acres thanks but I did try that a couple of times, my digital pad is off to the right hand side right next to the opening where you can see the coils and so I did get close to it when cleaning I guess I could have caused some kind of short but during the day when it's hot like today the machine stops moving around the settings and only did it this morning when it was really cool and not working as hard! I don't know. It is a lot cleaner now and stopped dripping tons of water in my house since a ton of slime came out my drain hole in the back. I did leave the unit plugged in when I did it although it was turned off the whole time (mine is plugged in behind my stove and really hard to unplug) next time I will turn off the breaker while I clean it which I wish I would have thought of before
+shessosweet88 Do you by chance have it on economy or energy saver mode? On some settings the display shows room temperature rather than temperature its set at to maintain. I keep mine on cool and when condenser shuts off the fan and ac remain on, circulating air. My neighbor has his on energy saver and his unit shuts on and off and the display changes. It sounds like it could be something like that. It could be also your paying more attention to it noticing things you didn't notice before. I set mine on fan it changes display to actual room temperature. It's hard to say without seeing it but what your describing sounds like it's doing what it's supposed to. With cooler nights they will cycle down. Mine is on 24/7 or else I wake up sweating. In Florida we can get 40 and 50 degree changes in 24 hour period. With ac fan running I don't have to use heat as much because the ac pulls cold damp air out of the house.
Thanks for the AC cleaning tips. ..very helpful, I even have the same type of unit....jus to let you know. ..you can remove the vent grids they just pop off the little plastic rod holder it sits in
Thank you, i have the same unit and it is also fixed in place. I found i could use a toothbrush on the inner fins to gentle remove anything that sticks and is being stubborn
This is exactly how I cleaned mine with a 1/3 mix of 91% alcohol and water. I'm jus trying to figure out how to remove the inside gray vents without breaking them. There's some intense mold slime action going on. First time in the years that I've had it...but guess there's first time for everything. Awesome video for this ac. It's not an easy one. O.o
Thank you for the video. I am in a new art studio space and the AC window unit doesn't work well but it works so I'm sure it needs to be cleaned. Going to do this first thing Monday morning!
I was wondering if I could pour water into the unit like that (since it gets rained on our side) but I’m glad you showed me cus I was worried about messing up the unit.
And I live in a small apartment and can’t remove mine because once it’s put in housing (yea I live in housing) they come around and secure it in and we aren’t allowed to really remove it. 🤷🏼♀️. Thanks again so much. Tomorrow is spring clean my apartment day so I can cook it down in here tomorrow. It’s 2021 and I found this. I also don’t have a water hook up or a hose BUT I GOT A BUCKET OF WATER. so will get this done! Yuk. I’m afraid to look at mine because i should of cleaned it before wrapping it up for the winter 🤦🏼♀️
Seriously! Thank you so very much for showing this! My a/c unit is old and hasn't been working...only have had it plugged in for 12hrs and it started freezing up. You helped me so much with every single step. Thanks again!
