doesnt the bleach fade out the colors of the plants eventually?

Yes ! You will get a average of a year out the plants before you have to buy new ones.

15 minutes is enough. My experience. No reason for 24 to 48 hours. That'll wreck and fade them pretty quick, I imagine.
