Clear instructions that definitely helped someone absolutely new to b flowers. Thank you. I saw somewhere else to apply oil to the fingertips to reduce the blackening, which I followed. But must say cleaning this is truly a labour of love, dunno if I will ever do this again!

After removing 5 or 6 brown skin,then fine chop all together.don't remove the brown skin.

After removing about 5, 6 brown skins we chop the remaining flower all together and make stir fry adding grated coconut and some whole moog dal with some onions ,green chillies etc.

In Guyana we have typical, tropical weather, lot's of banana 🌲 trees, and I have never heard anyone ever mentioning about "banana flowers being edible! With plantain trees being similar, are their flowers edible too? Great explanation on using yogurt in water to avoid, cut flowers being discolored, and removing pistil in each set of flowerets to avoid bitter taste! Classic explanation!

I have heard of using some lime juice in water also. In the US we have a commercial product to prevent this browning, it's a powder of Citric Acid and Vitamin C. I use it to make potato pancakes, we all know how potatoes turn brown! I want to try it here. Also the banana plant is full of this latex kind of thing that is astringent to taste and stains, I wonder if it can be soaked away?

It is called stigma, found in all kind of flower which helps in pollination. While cooking banana flower, it is tough to cook and also it is bitter & strong in taste. Therefore it is important to remove it.

You dont need to peel those white covers they are soft and good for cooking along with those petals

Can you explain why you need to remove that tall stick with a little head and that look like polythene paper? Are they harmful if eaten poisonous or something?

No, they aren't known to be harmful or poisonous - they are just indigestible by the human body. Their texture is akin to a piece of plastic string. Hope this helps.

my fingers started to swell and the skin feel very tight until I washed my hands. Is there an enzyme in the sap that causes allergic skin reactions? If so, what is the solution? Do you soak the flowers in something before you take the middle out?

You may apply some virgin mustard oil on your hand thoroughly before working on flowers. It will help.

Just cleaned the flowers and Im alergic as well. Im so disapointed! I have a few food alleries mainly mango and pinapple but can eat bananas fine. The sap stained a few of my fingernails and Im unable to wash off the sap from my skin with soap. It feels a little like an alkaline burn on my skin when I clean with bleach and don't use gloves. Just wanted to advise people who may have a similar skin sensitivity. Wont be able to make this recipe.

I am going to make kare kare. I am to take a few leaves/petals off then slice lengthwise then slice 1" pieces...soak in vinegar water...as per the recipe.

because they will give you death by diarrhea..... the only way to survive is to continually eat bananas on the toilet while diarrhea them out, but the process takes months, so most people just choose to die :)
